I'm thinking of upgrading to a VS-2 for false color mainly. Any flaws so far?

    The HDMI is this...

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/CSL-Ethernet-compliant-1080p--Channel/dp/B00NEMIY2M/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1463186321&sr=8-4&keywords=hdmi+cable+0+5m

    Sounds interesting...

Playing around with the buttons can get a little tricky (mainly because of the size), but I'm sure we'll get used to it.

    Thanks for the link.

The VS-2 is working fine for me so far. False color seems ok and consistant. However histogram is somewhat strange and different than what the Pocket shows, hight light info seems capped and not complete. I haven't tried the histogram with the Micro yet.

    Some bad things:

The color of this monitor is bad, it's way too green by default and I couldn't calibrate it to a point that I'm satisfied. I shoot Raw so it still seems ok to me.

Furthermore, for some reason, the shadow/highlight in the monitor is kind of mushy, hardly any detail there. I guess it has something to do with the dynamic range of the monitor or the signal procressing is quirky.

My feeling about this monitor is that it's good for focusing and exposure, the rest is bad. For the price it's quite ok though. They promised for firmware upgrade but the link never works...

So I have wondered about this quite a bit myself and have not found anything on the internet about it.

So aperture is calculated as the focal length / diameter of the iris correct? so wouldn't that mean the lens needs to open the iris when you zoom a lens in order to keep the same f-number?

That's correct. Years ago I had the EF 17-40L lens, the aperture was coupled with a mechanical slider, and I can see the aperture change by itself when I zoom, even without power, and there was no change of exposure of the camera while zooming. Nowadays the constant aperture could be fully controlled by electronic, I'm not sure about this though.

I had it, and it's terrible compared to other options!! It is a smart design but poorly executed. Mine didn't flip properly (half of the time the image staid upside down) and they didn't answer to my emails. And it's really low res (I got a MustHD and the difference was huge). I would get a Aputure FineHD V2 if I was buying now, best bang for buck if you don't want a recorder and you like big monitors.

    This is my setup...

    IMG_20160513_245224962.jpg

Attaching the mini plate to the monitor makes the setup fast and easy and it all fits in a small cheap Amazon camera bag.

    IMG_20160513_245555467.jpg

The best thing is that when you block the tripod head (Mantona 18008) that holds the monitor (MustHD) it's feels like a handle, and it's quite comfy to hold with one hand and pull focus with the other. It's like holding an inverse Bolex D16... I really like it!

All I need is a cage to protect the cameras HDMI input.

I'm doing exactly the same with a VS-2 FineHD. It's very nice to use it this way. Your HDMI cable looks nice, where can I find one?

  4. 3k+ for a still FF camera and people keep praying for better 8 bit compressed video quality, maybe even cropped and without zebra etc., I'm starting to think how unefficient it is to stay with Canon after seeing what Blackmagic and Kinefinity can deliver with their price.

It's so unfortunate that Canon banned Magic Lantern, no more 5D raw video on new models.

…and after the last few major upgrades I've done, I've learned that grownups CAREFULLY SAVE THEIR PURCHASE CODES for plugins… the serial numbers or whatever, the download link, and a master list of plugins for everything, all in one place. It can be months after an upgrade and I'm mixing in protools and realize "that vintage comp emulation would be tits on this"… and it's not there… grrrr. Trying to remember to do that every time I buy something.

One thing I miss about the previous Mac Pro? All those places for hard drives. It was so easy to pop in an SSD and boot back and forth - and still have your older OS drive accessible if you needed to dig through the library or whatever.

Oh that's a big problem indeed. I have a note in OneNote or Evernote etc, with all my serial numbers written down. Softwares like Premiere are now using cloud based licence management. So it's getting easier, just rememeber the account and there you go.

  6. Yeah, I make sure all my files are kept in a separate disk.

Check this out: http://www.macworld.com/article/1164891/mac-apps/keeping-mac-os-and-data-on-separate-drives.html  This is one hell of reason I like Mac OS, just like those Linux and Unix systems. Organizing files is a breeze. Actually most of the settings are still there after reinstall the OS if we do it right, saved a lot of time, and I don't need time machine any more.

I don't do upgrades anymore because it's actually quite buggy most of the time. Instead I just do a clean install. I normally spend about two hours for the install of everything and it's very easy with the above trick. Once per year for a Mac, doesn't sound too crazy, and it actually saved me quite some time from sorting out all the upgrade bugs. And sure the OS is blazing fast as it's a clean install, no matter it's Mac or Windows.

More likely to be an X Mount imo. The Xpro2 is 90% there and the xt2 could be the winner.

Yes that could be a good solution. The Fuji lenses are also quite nice, looking forward to the XT2.

    what about 4K video element + Blackmagic new 4K recorded…..Total = 1,399 + 895 = 2,294….and we have full 4K camera with excellent audio and very light…..could be a winner?

I'm thinking exactly the same. But some drawbacks in mind is that the slo-mo is not possible anymore with the VA.

  9. It feels a bit like kickstarter way of gathering feedback and market research to me. $500 reservation is not that much for their 4k model, and the amount of reservation and the feedback from the forums can reflect how the market may react to their final product. They just need to ask for that $500 on monday, not in this email.

I hope there will be some solid specs coming out, but somehow I have a feeling that it will look like a Terra 5K or Axiom. Curious curious curious :dizzy:

Maybe I'm just too naive, but I assumed the secretive aspect was a marketing strategy. I know I'll be dialed in on Monday at noon EST.

I think the rest of the spec release schedule could be patent issues and perhaps they don't want to blow it like BM's global shutter snafu. Or maybe we should just take them at their word that they really do want to hear from their customers.

Regardless, I feel so blessed to be a filmmaker this day.

I guess there are some specs which can still be changed or they're not fully determined yet, but the major specs will probably be available at the time the reservation opens. I don't like the global shutter issue with BM either and Craft seems to be cautious, not a bad thing.

close. it's a rode videomicro. $60. i originally bought it for the pocket to get better reference audio. it's very, very good. I actually haven't tried the micro cinema camera's mic yet to compare the two. But I hear it's improved over the Pocket.

Nice! I'm going to get one as well, a great combo.

  12. I can translate it for you guys.

Terra 6K has the same sensor as KineMAX 6k

    Terra 5K: 5K 60FPS, 4K 100FPS, 3K 150FPS, 2K 200FPS

Has option of global shutter, native iso 800

15 stops DR with rolling shutter and dual gain mode

13 stops DR with global shutter

The Dual gain feels like a HDR thing?

    RAW 12bit + ProRes 10bit internal recording, KineLog3, 2.5" SSD

About the same size as a 5DIII

HDMI out with type A connector (big connector), 3.5mm Mic in

SDI and XLR are there as well, it seems like an external module

12mm is pretty wide. I have a speedbooster on it that makes it nearly equivalent to a Super35 sensor, which is a field of view I'm more used to. and I have it rigged like this currently. when i go shoulder mounted the monitor gets rigged to the front with a Noga arm connected to two handles, and a shoulder pad slides onto those rear rods where the monitor is now. whole thing weighs roughly 7lbs and that's a fairly heavy lens on it. it's just enough weight to counter "micro jitters" without making it a beast to lug around.

Zak is that a Rode VideoMic Go on you rig? How do you like this audio setup?

I would like to use NX1 and NX500 for interviews, or other small videos. Does anyone has any ideas how to match?

What I usually do (I haven't done any NX500 video, is my everyday photo camera with the 30mm pancake) is

STANDARD or VIVID /  Smart Range: OFF / OLED:NO / Constrast: -4 Sharpness: -10, everything else default. 16-235 (NX1 only).

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, for us that we haven't Andrew's LUT, is there any workaround?

I haven't got Andrew's LUT either, but I think there are many nice LUTs around the net as well. In fact I just bought the Osiris LUT and I'm trying it out.
