  1. While it lacks an articulating screen and a few niceties like waveforms ... it seems to be a much more substantial camera from a build standpoint and it is very easy to monitor exposure and focus on the Mark IV. I appreciate the addition mass of the camera ... seems much more stable on Glidecam and video head but I miss the IBIS. Huge files but they edit well in Resolve Studio ... and it seems to have less noise and artifacts. Coming from ML Raw on the 7D it is nice to see Canon's color science in 4K. I miss the V-Log but with EOSHD CLog and true Canon CLog coming in July it is a short time till parity with regards to exposure with wide DR settings. Handling the highlights will be the issue ... I need to profile the camera with my Sekonic meter to assist in this area.

I realized that the 1.7 crop is not too much of a detriment as I am usually shooting towards to long side and it uses the sweet spot of the FF lenses. The Zeiss 21 ZE is about as wide as I will need ... With the Mark IV I have returned to MF with Zeiss lenses ... and will look forward to discovering the DPAF tracking at a future date.

And you get about the same time as with ML Raw at 800MB/Sec for 4KDCI 23.97 ... about 17 minutes per 64Gb card. So I will need to develop a ProRes HQ encoding workflow to save a bit of disc space as I go forward. I did discover that SD UHS-2 cards are not supported and my old Sandisk Pro 95MB/Sec cards work great ... all the 280/300MB/Sec Type 3 cards will not work. CF cards to UDMA 7 are fine.

Really at this point I am trying to get a handle on Resolve ... gave up on the subscription mode of Premiere and hope to learn all the seemingly undocumented shortcuts of Resolve.

  2. Whole lot of drama ... whole lotta ...

I just dropped my GH5 back to the dealer and took delivery of a 5DMk4 and a Zeiss XE 21 .... crap AF and

should I mention the build quality is a bit deficient.

Many dismiss the 5DMk4 due to the crop but I never shoot really wide ... intro shots but nothing

of interest there in video for me ... stills yes but unless I am in the front seat of a bus going over the

falls ... Niagra for those of you in the EU ... don't really need 160 degree angle of view

Love the crop ... as I shoot a bit of landscape and in Texas that means leaning over a fence ... 1.7 works to

keep the dogs, bulls, ranchers at a distance ... really tired of jumping barbed wire ...

Will upgrade to the CLog when available ... not so sure about the EOSHD  bit ... bought the Sony version ... posed a question in a message that

today ... four months later has not been addressed. Call me a bit jaded. Ban me if you must.

    Just sayin.....

I have been working with the color matrix adjustments found in the "other settings" or the C300 mk II.

I find it a bit mystifying. Do any C300 users have any suggestions about how to approach these adjustments and their expected effects on the image color? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This site has a wonderful number of discussions about profiles luts and color ....

Somewhat Sony specific but the terms are the same for most cameras.

  4. The FSB is built for pro use/abuse but the pan tilt smoothness is very similar. The FSB 8 has 5 levels of drag ... the Ace and FSB 4/6 have 3.

FSB 8 has a quick release plate and a LED light bubble level ... internally probably a bit higher grade build ... better be at 4 times the price.

The FSB 8 can handle 2 to 22 pounds ... the Ace M 0 to 8. I am struggling to get a decent balance on the GH5 without my cage on the FSB 8 whereas

I was dialed in on the Ace.

Now that I have returned to video I assume that I may push above 8 pounds soon ... I prefer to shoot landscape and wildlife video and will be shooting

with the Olympus Pro 300 F4 ... not that heavy but long enough to add a significant lever arm on the balance equation. Stability at a 600 FF equivalent

    will be paramount.

I previously had a OConnor 1030 which was perfect ... other than the fact it and the tripod weighed over 17 pounds ... not ideal for a trek.

Should Canon introduce a decently priced 4K replacement for the C100 Mk II I will be considering that and their 200-400 zoom. But honestly the

GH5 is so good that unless I move to a RED or other RAW capture device I am unsure that I will see a major improvement over the Panasonic.

The value of the Ace ... tripod included is ridiculous ... cannot imagine anyone passing it up at its low entry price ... and I assume Sachtler is giving

them away in anticipation of future upgrade customers.

??? Run that by me again?? You can do this while recording??

Yes there is a small button to the right of the set button ... a little higher .... #42 p 17 on the PDF manual.

Cycles through 4 screens ... Info with settings Clean preview Settings preview and off.

    Works while recording.

Would be ideal to go from clean to settings ( waveform etc ) w/o the others but I usually set exposure based on

the Settings preview and waveform monitor start recording and use a clean screen if focus or framing might

    be an issue.

  6. Legs are in a box on the shelf in my closet ... at the time I bought it no head only ... but with the spreader and aluminum construction they are not what I use

in the field ... however the whole deal is cheap enough that storing the legs is not that big of a deal. I had a couple of Satchler heads ... bigger ones in the past

and this one is very smooth for the price point.

  7. I downgraded from an OConnor to the Ace ... as video is a plaything for me and the OConnor was a beast ... but the only head I could

do pans and tilts with no jitter consistently. The Ace is not in the same realm but with IBIS it can work.

Mine is on a set of Gitzo CF legs with their bowl. Very light and fast to use. Ideal for the mirrorless cameras and up to a C100.

Sorry for the pic ... had to rotate it as the site cut off the legs as it expects landscape format.

  8. I borrowed a XC15 from my LCS for a day ... when I returned it they had a GH5 that I picked up.

Played with the files out of the XC15 this afternoon and there is much to laud in them. Just

difficult without a couple extra programmable buttons and more than one ND setting.

  9. The original was a CCD and no video but 14Bit gorgeous files ... the M246 is a CMOS 12Bit ... as Leica says in monochrome there is no appreciable difference in

the capture ... as a derivative of the M240 color it does capture HD video no 4K. Many are hoping for a monochromatic SL which might give us 4K mono files.

When I settle into the GH5 I will pull the M246 and put it on my WoodenCamera rig and run some video. Need a few Variable NDs for my M Lenses ...

Here is an intro video with stills and clips:

And this looks like it was shot exclusively with the M246:
