  1. Who is pushing 4K at consumer level though? Sony, Samsung and Panasonic... what do they have in common that Canon don't? TV sales. Maybe Canon have been wise not to waste R&D money on 4K until they see if it hits a certain consumer saturation level? Those other companies were also pushing 3D at a consumer level and probably lost big money in R&D and bringing products to market when it didn't really take off. It is always wise to step away from personal wants and needs when judging this sort of financial/business stuff.... As I said earlier, I am very interested in 360 and VR, but certainly wont judge any company that are cautious about this market as it is still very niche... 4K is still quite niche to alot of people, even to pro video shooters, big time vloggers etc Canon, Nikon etc have let the dust settle and will probably feel 4K has taken off well enough to start really moving with it. That may have been a wise move for all we know.
  2. Seeing what happens next is pretty much my point and why quarterly reports can look scarier than they are. Things might get worse, I'm in no way saying they won't... But equally some deals made in Q3 and Q4 and other purchases, ideas and releases might start paying off. (Q2 will have many sales for Olympics, Euro 2016 etc, for instance). There are people here that seem to believe Canon are stupid, slow etc and actually will die out, just because they don't offer 4k for $1k .... I'm just offering a counter view ... I think they are mixing things up like they never have before... 50mpx sensor.... 250mpx sensor... 4k/60p... Ultra low light camera, 8k prototypes etc etc They are just not focusing on a very small group that is vocal here. I want a perfect 360 camera... Canon don't offer it... I don't get mad at Canon. This thought process seems simple to me. Not sure that makes me a Canon apologist... I extend the same thought process to all the other companies not making my perfect 360 camera too.
  3. I didn't really like that stretch technique with 60p mode... Seemed to lose something more than just resolution, like a spatial difference... Hard to explain.
  4. Why, because i'm not an idiot? I don't own a Canon product (you have just bought one though, right?)... I don't give a shiny shite who produces the image making machine I use... I just cannot deal with the level of idiocy shown on here at times.... I'd post exactly the same if someone were trying to make a big deal out of the Sony quarterlies, Samsung etc.... Misinformation is not helpful to this industry, your blog or your forum.
  5. I can't even go into the futile use of your income analogy, you may as well use an analogy about pink snakes and bicycles, it is so ridiculously off. I would go look up phrases like "you have to spend money to make money" and "speculate to accumulate".... They are a bit more apt here. You did however underline my theory that people are actually willing Canon to fail, simply because they didn't make a certain camera that suits their specific needs. We all get a bit annoyed a feature hold back, pricing etc... But I am first and foremost a professional that uses tools to make money, so can respect products like the 1D-X II and C300 mk II and disregard the things that are not targetted at me, like the 800D.
  6. "Continue to die" ... talk about over statement! You do realise that the report also says they made a PROFIT of $360m .... Profit, not sales, not income... Profit. Why do people throw out all logic just because a brand hasn't made the indie camera they want? Yes, they need to diversify, as both the camera and printer businesses are taking a hit due to mobile and internet tech, but they are still a massive company with fingers in all kinds of pies. They are still head and shoulders the pro choice of still shooters and have a heavy involvement in pro AV too. They are beginning to get into the niche imaging markets and no doubt have involvement in stuff like 3D printing and mobile sensor tech. They might be making less profit in one quarter (you know, 3 months), but dying... haha.... I think people actually want it to be true too, just because they haven't sunk as low in price as Sony and Lumix. Imagine that... wanting a huge brand to die out, just because they don't make the camera that ticks your very specific set of boxes. God love the internet.
  7. and one of his recent posts basically claimed the MK2 with raw was one of the best "forgotten cameras" for cinema. EOSHD likes tech and gets excited by the latest specs, but that doesn't always equate to the most balanced review... once the dust settles. I traded my 5D3 for an A7s and have hated it since day one... Everyone is different though. As soon as I can shoot 1080/60p raw on a Canon, I will move back.
  8. Why not just stick ML on the 5DII and shoot raw?
  9. People really need to stop looking at quarterlies and making sweeping statements. You are trying to analyse a drop in profits without ANY of the variable overheads and cost info to hand. It is next to useless.... None of us know what outlay they made in that quarter in a certain segment, knowing that Q2 or Q3 will then show a significant gain because of that investment. You only have to look further down that article ... They purchased several companies, last year... Maybe some of those purchases skewed Q1's profits as they transitioned them into the main company?
  10. It's seem this blog posting and all comments (including mine) are speaking about something we haven't seen, eg, pointless! Did Ang Lee actually show anything at NAB, if so, what is being said by the people who saw it?
  11. first person view bukaki VR
  12. The expansion port is seemingly a genius move... Several 360 rigs now using upto 7 micros , using the port for syncing
  13. It will sell like crazy in the stills world though
  14. maybe Andrew and other bloggers can make a full blog post on how it needs c-log to succeed as a filmmaking tool... canon need loud pressure from every blog, like with 24fp
  15. keep bombarding them with emails about c-log.... i send about 5 a day with various emails!
  16. Seems to be alot of people saying "this camera i've never used" is way better than "this camera i've never used".
  17. Is there some way to only let Vasele, Otto and the other hackers post here... Then the rest of us can comment in the main thread?
  18. Until I see it... I won't say how good/bad it is... Don't judge it on the poor 3d you have seen... Maybe it is just as bad, maybe it is amazing. Hopefully a NABer can enlighten us more
  19. manufacturers have worked out they get far more coverage announcing news when things are quite than at an event with 1000s of items to grab attention...
  20. For horror, the feeling of having something just out of your peripheral vision has always been a great technique... 360 video really heightens this. I cannot urge people enough to go get VR cardboard ($20) and download Insidious 3... It will change your entire thinking of what is possible, for narrative.... It will stay quite niche, but those who get it right will be pioneers in a new way of storytelling.
  21. my thinking is that companies are less inclined to make big announcements at these big events, where the noise levels are too high... With the internet, they can make a huge splash at any time of the year now.
  22. BTW... If you want to see how VR and 360 video could work for narrative, check out insidious 3 trailer for cardboard... The quality is SD at best, but by far the most chilling experience I have had in a long time.
  23. Not everyone on the forum is shooting for cinema. Once the technology advances, the applications will be wide reaching. I can't say too much about the specifics I am using 360 video in, but the elearning and medical industries are getting excited. Right now, the headset tech is probably behind the camera tech, which is why Jonesy had some unpleasant experiences... The glasses need at least 4k by 4k and need a high refresh rate and zero latency to reduce nausea. It is also natural for the filmmaker to want to show high octane experiences like surfing a big wave... All adding to the nausea inducing experience. As the industry improves and settles, hopefully so will the experience. Thanks Jonesy for the great write up... The Helios looks like the most interesting. Ps- other than the oculus and vive, the other headsets are very much dependent on which cellphone is being used... Interesting that you didn't like oculus, as that is probably the most powerful on the market. The oculus and vive have the ability to set focus for your eyes, something that probably doesn't happen much at expos, so might lead to blurry images.
  24. The surprise didn't have to be for low budget Indies. I imagine he was talking about the power lens
