Does anyone have insights on what kinda fps you need to film crash tests and such appealingly for the industry? No super high profile, but decent. Is 120 enough if you mess around with it in post?

Tried it with the Shogun, absolutely no difference. HDMI output to me seems identical to the internal recording anyhow. I believe it's the same issue as with the A7s Mk. 1, just improved upon. Also think it's not sensor related as the A7RII exhibits it even stronger. Probably just a 'Sony too lazy to work it out'.

These cameras would be so awesome with 10 bit or at least 10 bit HDMI.

Ah, here we go, saw your post before, but didn't have the cameras back then. My stuff is all Cine, so it's no S-Log issue for sure. It reminds me of the extreme magenta cast of the original A7s, which got horrible in higher ISOs. I don't mind it so much now as you don't notice it in most situations, but it's still an issue.

The native Sony lenses are extremely clean which of course doesn't give much character, have to fiddle with that in post (sure, not the same). Waiting for the Four Thirds adapter, so I can throw my Helios and Danubia on.

Get a Neewer battery grip.  But even so it's still mediocre, agreed. No big issue for me as I haven't done anything big yet. What I'm looking forward to especially is low light event shooting with the S, there's probably no better camera for that.

I'm loving the S II and the R II, going to get rid of the RX10 II because of obvious reasons (low light performance, sensor size). What I liked about it so much was the real easy run'n'gun option, but the new Alphas just do that with a much nicer image and package. The IBIS isn't really usable for video once you go above 135 mm, but up to that it's quite alright if you have a bit of practice with it. The S obviously is much better in low light and in my opinion in a few other scenarios, as well, but the R is at least decent all the time. There's a few downsides of course, the poor build quality of the display (really don't understand what they were thinking here, the cameras being so expensive). The Slo-Mo on the S is superb, even better than the RX10 II imho, if only for the full frame look. And you just can't produce bad video indoors with bad lighting with the S, much unlike the RX.

Lens-wise: the 90 macro is quite awesome, especially for video, with the added stabilization and the best ergonomics I've ever got to enjoy on a lens (you can switch between AF and MF just by clicking the focus ring up and down, plus you have a button to suspend AF while pushing it), also for close-ups it really does the trick, obviously. Image quality is flawless, too. The 55 1.8 is great as well, very light and small for the occasional ninja shot.

In terms of Auto Focus in video, the R is quite a bit better, but both aren't too reliable, especially in low light (here, the S is much better with native lenses as has been said before). All in all still quite alright, though.

I'm finally getting rid of my D800 and NX1, too, Sony all in, even though I don't like their philosophy, the cameras just pack so much punch. Stills of the R are so amazing and you can do pretty much everything handheld, the silent shooting is nice, too for certain situations (if you mind the shutter speed and other limitations).

It doesn't feel cheaper than the Sony, the Sony just looks a bit more polished. And imho the buttons are more tactile.

Anyone notice that the Neewer Battery Grip for the Mk IIs is a little bit better quality, has better grip, includes a wireless intervalometer and costs 80 € instead of 230+++? And it smells so much better!

Really, Sony should cut it with the Apple mentality or they'll get eaten by the chinese Supermen one day.  In general, the chinese products have become so good and other countries tend to lose their quality standards. Exciting future ahead.

Agreed, just been testing it and A7RII is definitely better on the 90 macro.

General video quality is a totally different story, though. I can't understand how many people find the A7RII as good as the A7SII. The S is much cleaner and nicer IMHO, even in comparison to the R crop. Sony are clearly differentiating and want enthusiasts/pros to buy both.

Anyone else notice this issue known from the A7S still persists? In higher ISOs (tested 3.2, 6.4 and 12.8K) you get these nice magenta blotches. It's much more subtle in the raw images (used uncompressed), but in video and much more so in JPEG it's pretty ugly. The A7SII is quite a bit better than the A7RII (guess the APS-C crop brings it out more and they probably worked on the S more intensively, because people complained about it in the Mk I), but still noticeable.

I really liked it, otherwise I wouldn't have commented. It has spirit. All the rest comes over time anyhow with a person who's really interested in what he does imho.

You can't talk about money, that's OUTRAGEOUS! I once asked a colleague who pretended to be my friend how much he earned on the job and no wonders got a very vague answer. If people tell how much they make, it gets comparable and decent people start realizing that they do more work for half the money or something like that.

Dunno bout the UK, but in Germany the going rate for a freelance writer slave starts at around 30–40 €, so 40 pounds for filming seems to be quite low. Especially if you factor in how much you have to spend for equipment and software (if you want to have everything legit and legal). I'd change prices according to the client. Corporate people probably won't respect you unless they have to pay decent money anyway – if they CAN respect anything at all.

Nice! I totally screwed up. Selected timelapse photography instead of interval shooting on my Nikon and got a 20 MB mov file instead of 20 GB worth of raw. Reaaaallyyyy frustrating, the night was absolutely stellar.

I find the out-of-focus Vlog parts pretty stressful to watch. Just keep going, you'll get there, learning to use the NLE doesn't exactly boost creativity. And I find there's always something that doesn't work or crashed on me so I lose motivation to keep going.

Probably it's a mixture of both.

Possibly because there's mainly little kids on YT & Co?
