  1. For 100M, ie 100mb/s you have to use the U3 cards, not necessarily say, 95/80's high speed.

Anything less than U3 ie U1 will only record at 60M. This for RX100IV, probably same for RX10 II.

SanDisk are usually higher quality than Transcend and if they advertise up to 90 MB/s write instead of the 65 from the Transcends, I'm pretty sure they will work. Kaylee can probably tell us that they do.

  2. Version 12 is out, and it is painfully slow (for me), even with no editing, does not support AVI container (Pentax K-5), etc etc. Still it's great to try grading there, though i'd like to speed it up a bit. What kind of GPU acceleration does it use? CUDA or OpenCL? What impact does it make in grading?

The way I understand it, you need a dedicated gfx card to get good performance, that is a card that isn't driving any monitor. With my single 970 GTX under Win 10, right now Premiere Pro has much better performance than Resolve.

  3. Hello!

Tonight I made a test of the ISO performance of the camera in still mode and I shot with both the mechanical and the electronic shutter to finally asses whether there's a reduction in quality like in other cameras or not.. I have to check the files more extensively and take a little bit more time to analyse them but I feel pretty confident to say that the electronic shutter on the α7R II looks pretty much indistinguishable from its mechanical counterpart and this is just insanely amazing! (especially for a time-lapse photographer, eheh!)

Awesome, that's really good news for time lapse enthusiasts. Kudos for the thorough testing!

  4. Thank god you didn't finish the review earlier as I was going to grab it in Thailand for a bargain price, putting diwn a deposit early. But the reason it is much cheaper in Asia is because the 4k video is just five minutes. Also confirmed on the Thai Sony site: http://www.sony.co.th/product/dsc-rx10m2?site=hp_en_TH_i

Now its back the the drawing board: RX10ii in UK for £1200 vs GH4 and mid range lens for around £1500.

Holy cow, that's something probably only Sony would do. How lame. Same in India as someone remarked above. If it's true and not just an error on the websites.

  5. Mine arrived on Friday afternoon and I went out yesterday and filmed some random images - mainly to test the ability of the camera (the narrative is piss poor!) So I focused on DOF, Latitude, variable frame rates as well as looking for moire and other artefacting.

Sweet images! And I probably like your taste in movies (C'est arrivé...). : )

Tbh I don't expect any of the fancy new Sony stuff to hold up for very long with all the IBIS, overheating and whatnot going on, but it's just too tempting convenience-wise. We'll see.

  6. thanks for the recommendation! ive got a couple of those transcends on the way from amazon

unfortunately i dropped the ball on this and my new rx10ii is coming tomorrow and i need something in the meantime that i can just pick up in a store...

does it have to be U3 or will U1 work? like would this be ok?

They're much more expensive and have higher write speeds (90 instead of 65), so I don't see why they shouldn't. :p

  7. Something as simple as a reverse gear on a follow focus solves the Nikon lens focusing direction...As the AF-S 28-70 f2.8  Ed and AF-S  80-200 lenses are the best I've ever used, its a small thing to deal with...for the privilege of using Nikon glass of that quality!

I don't wanna use a follow focus, I wanna stay light. And the D800 is no good for video. ; )

  8. Full frame noise performance sucks balls, Crop rolling shutter performance sucks balls.
Peoples grades of 8 bit slog2 will suck balls as the Cinema 5d video above proves.

Please don't sell your cameras, this camera will be old hat in less than a month.

I'll wait some more, don't fret. :d I'd just love to have a camera that does stills and video equally well and can handle ISO above 3200/6400.

  9. Hey agolex, Can you get repeatable rack focus or even accurate focus pulls with this or is it like all fly by wire lenses which are a pain in the a$$. Does the focus ring ever have hard stops? Also, is the xooming in/out very noisy? And the battery life?

Hello dafreaking, thanks for your inquiry, I hope I can be of help to you. :d

I'm not really sure about this, but as there's always software involved and adjustments made, I think it's a thing you just have to learn individually. The sensor size helps immensely, though, just using focus peaking worked relatively well for me. Andrew can probably say more about this.

The zooming certainly is far from silent and will most likely end up on the audio track. Other than that I didn't find it too annoying, though. And since the lens isn't parfocal, anyway...

Battery life is OK (few hours with a bit of recording here and there) and since the things are cheap, I don't see it as much of an issue.

    Best regards,

    Your unofficial Sony support :p

  10. One of the huge advantages of the exmor sensor is of course the ability to do extreme shadow recovery in scenes presenting a huge dynamic range.  Nikon is able to use the sensor to its fullest potential; Sony, ironically, as of yet, cannot, even though it's their sensor.  Lucky for you, you don't care.  It matters to me.  If it didn't, I'd still be shooting Canon.

I don't expect the Sonys to beat the Nikons in every regard, not even my D800. I prefer the mirror with pentaprism to all EVF-stuff, I find it more responsive and direct. It's just that the a7rii would be such a nice all-in-one package, that's about the only reason I would be willing to switch. And like I said above, I kinda feel bad taking prololonged timelapses with the Nikon, because it wears the thing down (not to mention the resulting shutter dust/oil spots). In the end, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sonys would have to be repaired earlier because of things like the IBIS and less quality in general. It's all a matter of compromise to me. What I would love without exception, though: not having to use the retarded reverse focus mechanism of the Nikon lenses.

  11. @agolex: in the description: Shutter Speeds: Various (Sometimes very High). Occasional use of ND Filter on the 50mm 1.4 to achieve 180 degree shutter (1/50).

So looks like all the other shots are shot without ND's with high shutter speeds - that's what makes motion look bad...

Yeah, thanks! The second clip doesn't seem to have any of these issues. Really thinking about getting rid of my other cameras, this sure is a nice package. :d

  12. Looks and sounds really decent. Right now I'm thinking a7rii as A and rx10ii as B cam might be the way to go. The XLR-adapter really is a treat and it works on both cameras. If the a7rii's stills are as good as I think they might be, I could get rid of the Nikon D800 for stills, the NX1 and hope that the Sony has come down in price by then.

  13. hi. thank you.

here is the sony link saying 5minutes 4k limit : http://www.sony.co.in/product/dsc-rx10m2?hpid=dsc-rx10m2:model:hub:mainbanner

Would be ridiculous to change that per region, probably just an error. Though I wouldn't be too surprised, it's Sony after all. :p

In that clip with the horse, autofocus seems to trace the subject... Does 240fps mode offer it? Or only fixed focus?

Tbh, I can't say for sure, I was under the impression you had to set focus before shooting. Anyhow, focussing in HFR is a major PITA anyway. If you can use AF with HFR, I doubt it works in a sensible way.

  14. How's it going using the camera handheld? I'd say 80% of my shots are handheld. I'm used to using some kind of shoulder support, but I'm hoping I can get away with something much less.

The Steady Shot is superb, so no problem in handholding.

And sony india says RX10ii can only record 4k for 5minutes only! is it same every where else ?

That limit is for the RX100M4, not for the RX10 for which the limit is as stated before 29:59 or something like that. I've recorded over 22 minutes in 4K and no issues.

  15. The only thing is: is it safe to upgrade for 8.1 pro or shall I do a fresh install (I usually do fresh installs instead of upgrades)

It's a really smooth upgrading experience. There's been a few issues in the earlier TechPreview versions, but it should really be fine right now. Do give it a restart or two after finishing, though. Oh, and definitely make sure there's enough free space on the HD. 30 Gigs+ is probably best.

  16. Someone who owns the RX 10 II, Does the USB Charging work while recording? Can I plug/unplug it while recording? Also do you know if it comes with a cable lock/protector like the A7s does? Have any of you used a smartphone with the play memories app to control/monitor the camera?

Charging indicator goes out once you switch on the camera. No cable lock. Yes, the app could be great due to the best resolution of all free solutions around, however this gets messed up by the fact you can't use picture profiles and other advanced settings when recording with the app.

  17.

As I don't use Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer is it safe to go for the Windows 10 "N" version?

Or does losing those take out important functionality / codecs?

Hard to say without using it. Found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/3f0bnl/windows_10_n_and_ffxiv_warning/

You can always change defaults, I wouldn't install the N version. Edge is really fast, too and you might wanna try it in the future. Don't see any interference, either. Win 10 is quite slick all in all.

  18. Yeah.  Unfortunately I use WMC too much to let it go.  No upgrade for me.  I have been toying with the idea of building a dedicated WMC PC so that will probably be the route I go... eventually.

For a dedicated Media Center I recommend Kodi/XBMC, highly customizable and extendable.

  19. Been using it for a few months, few issues every now and then but nothing major. DirectX 12 seems to work much better than 11 for me in games, even with DX 11 clients. Generally, I prefer it to Win 8 by a landslide. Few issues with VPN and Resolve 11 seemed to be problematic, but 12 now is working flawlessly.
