  1. I would be surprised if the A7III doesn't perform as well as the A6500 - full sensor downsample from 24 MP to 4K, and best video AF performance. But don't expect to save money over the A7RII!
  2. All the other crop cameras either allow the use of speedbooster (or similar) or EF-S lenses, to mitigate some of the issues.
  3. To be fair, Sony have been producing the best cameras for adapted non-Sony lenses for several years, unlike pretty much any other manufacturer, certainly in the full frame market.
  4. Speedboosters, adaptors, fast manual primes etc are available for both platforms to compensate for smaller sensors. Unfortunately the fact that the video AF on the A6500 is looking so useable means that native lenses are suddenly looking more "essential". A good problem to have I suppose.
  5. Does the hardware allow for full sensor readout at 24 fps? If you are stuck with the 4K crop mode that Canon uses, even if you have raw, what is the point?
  6. Given the shallower DOF and better low light on APS-C you really have to compare an F2.8 lens on µ4/3 with F4 lenses on Sony. The smaller the sensor the easier it is to build f2.8 lenses, so naturally they will be cheaper.
  7. Lovely combo. Even the slow-mo footage doesn't look too bad at 4K. Looking at the Sony options now, I would wait to see if the A7iii comes out soon. If they match the A6500 for full sensor 6K downsample and AF, then it might be the best FF option yet, except in very low light. The A6500 is very tempting with a focal reducer, but the 28mm f2 is a very attractive option full frame, and if you add in good native AF performance then it could be the gimbal option of choice.
  8. Would it be impossible for Mitakon to make a Lens Turbo with interchangeable rear mounts, being as they are just dumb adaptors of slightly different lengths. Going with the EF version, and finding 3rd party adaptors to F, MD, M42 etc seems a bit kludgy.
  9. Don't hold your breath. It's mostly down to the form factor. Maybe the 1080p can be improved, though my guess it is a 3K lineskipped image down sampled, and if they crisped it up the lineskipping might give artefacts. No one else fits so much functionality into such a small body. The "solution" is to get an A7Rii and use it in crop mode. The 6K sensor readout is going to be slow, until we get next-generation processing on to it.
  10. If you have stabilised lenses or shoot only stills, then the A6300 is a better value option. Remember people buying these cameras mostly for video are still a small part of the market, which is why there are a lot of compromises on the form factor and interface for folk who shoot video professionally. Still, if your shooting style allows you to work round the limitations, and you invest some time in your kit, there isn't much choice at this price point. Even if the IS is not class leading, it does take a chunk out of the downside of the rolling shutter. For slow-mo 1080p footage (admittedly a bit soft), and even hand-held 4K shot with care, this is definitely a more useable camera for video without the cost and hassle of a gimbal.
  11. Probably a good idea to wait for the 1.1 version with Sony products, to actually assess their capabilities fully. The downside of offering so many features.
  12. SLR lenses get increasingly complex to design as they get wider - technically they are called retrofocus designs, as the focal length is greater than the distance from the film . Fast 50s are obviously easy, but fast wide-angles are always more of a challenge to design, which is why anything wider than 35mm, that is faster than f1.4 is significantly more expensive. Fast mirrorless wide angles should be easier to design, though digital sensors can be tricky with rays hitting obliquely, so maybe there haven't been as many "rangefinder-style" small fast wide lenses as might have been expected.
  13. It may be a full face tattoo, in which case he is sorted. Anyway, you don't need to worry, that guy can do anything, including create time from nothing for tanning himself. And it's going to be beautiful. Love all that stuff. Tough times can produce great culture. On balance, I would probably still rather live through boring times.
  14. Do you mean the Sony A6500? If you touch the screen lightly enough maybe you can change focus without shaking the camera
  15. Effect on camera technology? They are all going to have to create a new white balance setting to be in with a chance of giving Trump a credible skin tone...
  16. Couple of things: when the PDAF is on the sensor, sensor-based stabilisation is good for object tracking, especially at long FLs. This camera has some extra processing power, don't know if any of it goes to helping with AF though.
  17. Not the most challenging subject to shoot, in bright light. Let's see a small fast dog running towards the camera in low light... I want to believe that the AF is excellent, but a lot of cameras could cope with shooting this.
  18. It's a fine cheapish lens, but best used on a Nikon AF camera. For adapted MF use, the focus ring action is not great, because of its lightweight plastic construction. Plenty of older 50mm f1.8 MF lenses from Nikon or other makers that have metal construction and more satisfying focus action. Also note that this lens, and many with the D designation, will only autofocus on more expensive Nikon bodies, that have a body-focus motor. It is MF-only on D3XXX or D5XXX series cameras
  19. Shame, a film camera could really use stabilisation. I remember the old days of holding my SLR against pillars or walls to try and steady long exposures in low light. Get out your rangefinder and shoot off a roll! Love the tones from your expired chemicals.
  20. You really should have tried your film camera on the gimbal, pretty steampunk
  21. Thanks. It is not massively cheaper unfortunately, and would probably restrict the choice of glass on an A6xxx. A good option if you have a dedicated small gimbal cam.
  22. How does the price compare with the full size Crane? I guess this might be an option for A6xxx series camera, but probably with the most compact lenses, not any of the larger zooms.
  23. At some point that 8K sensor in the A7Rii will evolve into an 8K video sensor. Possibly with full sensor readout down sampled to 4K. Could appear in an FS7 body, with 6K readout from the S35 crop. They didn't decide on that form factor without having some future plans for it. In a bigger body they may be able to boost the readout speed without frying the electronics.
  24. At a push, Sony A6500 + 18-105mm weighs about 880g. Might be a decent 4K gimbal cam, with triple stabilisation.
  25. I was assuming that I would need a gimbal for use with an A6300, now the sensor stabilised A6500 has come out I might hold off a bit. The good thing is a small camera can work with a cheaper, more compact gimbal. I fully acknowledge that RS and overheating are serious problems for some shooting styles, but the quality of the 4K image out of these cameras, and the potential for a speed boosted full frame image, makes it worth considering work arounds for the limitations surely?
