  1. the end result after grading is pretty good man. Smooth transition from shadow to highlight while still looking contrasty
  2. im gonna try changing my luminance in cam and then convert to prores using rocky mountains. The whitepaper for prores says its an 16-235 codec anyway so I assume that is the issue. Speaking of the whites, i found something interesting in highlights when shooting 16-235 vs 0-255. For some odd reason I can go about 0.6 of a stop higher than 0-255 before the overexposure guide reads the area as blown. Maybe 16-235 on this cam is actually compressing the bright portion of the image that otherwise looks pure white on 0-255 as you mentioned ?

the voigtlander's are great I had the leica m mount ones on my a7s. That is one set of lenses I regret letting go but they were only compatible my emount cam ! Hey if anyone wants a set of nikkors I am selling them on ebay for cheap ! and yeah dude I know what you mean by shooting with a cohesive set of lenses. I personally will never mix lenses from different brands on a shoot. The look becomes very inconsistent. Im hoping these zeiss milvus lenses are worth the hype & money cause they are bragging about an all new lens design optimized for high resolution sensors. My mouth watering just thinking about it

Im going to start off with either the milvus 35mm f2 or the 21mm 2.8 & definitely the 50mm f1.4 !
  5. its weird dude ! Behaves the same way in the shadows as well. Push the image around a little and you end up with a ton of range that once looked clipped. I personally use impulz LUTS because they tend to recover that data. If you go through the ideal nx1 settings thread we have covered a lot of info regarding the nx1 and are still currently experimenting with it

Pulling the trigger on some zeiss milvus lenses by march. The rendering is undeniable. Im surprised I don't see many videos online with people shooting with em. On instagram the #zeissmilvus tag has a lot of high quality stills work on there. A sharp modern look but doesn't look all clinical I can't explain it but I want it lol
  7. you make a good argument about the 5DIII in comparison to other cams. I do not want ANY in cam sharpening and dslr's force that shit down your throat !!! The idea of a digital negative when shooting raw is appealing but the file sizes aren't but understandably it comes with the territory. I see the latest ML update came out in december 2015 so I guess it should be damn stable with 2 years of those guys working on it since the debut of raw. I currently have the NX1 which gives very pleasing colors out the box, doesn't look 8 bit but in some shooting scenarios the macroblocking is there. Definitely food for thought. may end up renting a 5d before i decide to pull the trigger
  8. a black satin is cool, its kinda reserved but has the benefits of the black pro mist and the black diffusion fx in one. I personally use black pro mists for the better highlight roll off and subdued highlights but you may not like how it flares. A lil gaussian blur helps as well ! i'll keep that in mind. I figured if SLI works for games it will work for adobe lol guess not
  9. sounds good, cause all I wanted it for was b-roll & full frame stills. I wouldn't shoot a take beyond 10 seconds
  10. so I guess the 5D aint worth it huh ? I can do 60p with my nx1 and I rarely use slow mo any way so im not worried about it. I see a new 5d with battery grip for $2,500 on ebay right now ! How is the image quality of the 5D raw ? Worth the price tag ?
  11. gonna do some research on the pocket & micro. i liked what I was seeing from it I guess the batt life is just something to deal with, I only need it for b-roll anyway ! Its funny you say ML stopped supporting it , the last thing I need is this shit crashing on me on a paid gig. I was happy with the a7s until the blue clipping got me fired & cussed out when it completely destroyed my clients performance video ! I've been feeling like a raw image is the way to go its legit the difference between shooting jpg & shooting raw with a stills cam. Appreciate the info
  12. I am using a razer blade laptop with 16gb of memory, turbo boost to 3.6ghz intel i7, nvidia gtx 970m ! I really need to build a desktop with two graphics cards you've been getting some damn good results man. None of that high sharpness aliasing neither !

the Nikkor ais really secures the analog look on digital bodies. May not have the zeiss otus level sharpness everyone is chasing but the minute I add grain and contrast in lightroom...dude it looks no different than the looks I fell in love with when I first got hip to 35mm photographers. Def an analog look without the horrendous analog artifacts ! how was your 20 wide open bro ?
  14. Thank you ! Im searching for the perfect camera even though it doesn't exist lmao ! Nah I really just like to experiment man and as my knowledge grows and style evolves I really need the right lens/camera combo to express it. Honestly some of my best work was with the gh3/gh4 and I wouldn't mind picking up a gh4 with speedbooster but strangely enough these agencies kinda look the other way when a 5D isn't on your equipment list. Either way with the way I grade and how the 5D sensor renders color I think I can get amazing results from it. I just need to know if the current magic lantern build is stable enough to do a paid gig with. this was my first project with a t3i loaded with magic lantern https://vimeo.com/39108335 that's a lot of questions bro lol. In short for the content I plan to shoot with it (fashion editorials, b-roll for short films) it would be nice to have the same flexibility and quality as you get from RAW stills. Most of my work are shot in 8-10 second bursts (unless its an interview and I will not be shooting interviews with this) so after converting to cineform raw I should be good on space. Camera crashing is certainly not ok thats why I am asking in this thread if magic lantern has worked out the kinks. I know those guys work really hard and when I had my t3i it stepped up the quality of my work big time ! Size/weight is not important to me I am in the military I am using to carrying rifles etc. and my hands are pretty steady so im not worried about that. I will get a z-finder loupe if I do purchase the 5D. As far as cameras are concerned I know there is a time and place for everything and I am keeping my NX1 because of the quality and low file sizes. I'll bring the NX1 out for documentaries, interviews, narratives etc. best of both worlds is what I am aiming for with a 5D x NX1 setup Yeah I feel like you will be getting more for your $ out of the 5D with a full frame aesthetic to go with my crop sensor camera
  15. I've been thinking of picking up a 5D mark iii over a blackmagic pocket for some months now. Its been really hard to find recent footage from the hacked 5D. I am not chasing resolution I just want quality RAW footage so : How is the magic lantern hack in 2016 ? Is it more stable than it was when RAW was first introduced to the 5D ? Is the boost in image quality worth it as far as workflow and storage etc. are concerned ? How does it compare to its competitors like blackmagic and Sony ?
  16. i'll try shooting 16-235 with Gamma C at default settings and transcode to prores 422 hg 1080p today. No grading, just wanna see if it will speed up the workflow. H.265 is really demanding on my system where h.264 is much faster

May pick up a nikkor 20mm 2.8 ais today. The nikkors may not be the best optically by todays standards with all this talk of 6k resolution but...damn they have a whole lot of character ! this is from the nikkor 28mm f2.8 ais, looks like film to me
  18. so you shoot with master black levels cranked up ?
  19. damn that looks real good ! So you are saying the nx1 is taking in more light ? I've noticed before that the image looked brighter at lower iso's than other cameras but I didnt think anything of it
  20. how can I get my hands on one of these lenses ?! I've been dying to get my nikkor ais lenses modified or simply purchase one of your trump lenses
  21. what's the dog schidt guys name on here ? If he could modify my nikkors I would paint masterpieces with it. Literally the coating is a game changer. The DP in saving private ryan requested to have the coatings of their lenses removed. Instant low con
  22. yeah the impulz cineon conversion is well put together. visioncolor has always been extremely precise with their luts. If you have a way to view the lut file individual adjustments in an app like color finesse you would see an insane amount of detail that was put in the LUT ! Deluts are good too i use it in conjunction with impulz Unfortunately I don't think it will affect the macroblocking. I think maybe the only lens that can improve the image in that regard is a low contrast dog schidt lens but good luck getting your hands on one of those. i've been contacting him to make me one for the longest now and I have not received a response ! Macroblocking occurs in the shadows where the compression assigns the least amount of data and in shots stopped down with deep depth of field, lots of motion and sharpness. The detail exceeds the bitrate of the codec and voila compression artifacts like macroblocking show up :(
  23. I would use the samsung lens with an expodisc to make sure the white balance is accurate. As far as the r,g,b luminosity adjustments go it should be universal across all the nx1 chips. Im sure the adjustments are based off of a universal scale kinda like how 0-255 & 16-235 luma will be the same on any camera. You can use the cine alta primes when you're done testing just to quickly confirm the colors are roughly the same. A little variance shouldn't affect the image that much think the nx1 came out about the same time. I really do think their S line of lenses were designed with the nx1 in mind
  24. if you got the time i'll donate some funds for the cause !
  25. before we make LUT's for the NX1 we need to have a group project lol. We need someone that has an external recorder with vectorscopes to shoot some charts to find which profile has the most accurate color after hue & saturation adjustments and then start from there. Tweaking the color balance may be a hidden gem as well I know there may be a lot more to it than setting the green down to x0.94. Once we can get the most accurate color possible out the cam then we can build LUT's for it. Im down to help you test it. I would shoot some charts if I wasn't so damn busy !
