  1. That 1:1 crop actually may significantly increase image quality. No downscaling from the sensor, little to no moire, probably more sensor noise but better 3200 iso since downscaling isn't destroying the image at high iso anymore
  2. Most of us are familiar with FILMCONVERT and the innovation it has brought to the filmmaking community. Beyond simply emulating the look of film it has allowed us to easily match color between different camera bodies as well as offering in my opinion the best looking film grain emulation in the market. Recently I have reached out to the developers of FILMCONVERT concerning the possible support and profiling of the Samsung NX1. Why is this important to the NX community ? FILMCONVERT will be the first plugin/LUT with a profile built specific to the Samsung NX1 color and sensor and will be significantly more accurate in emulating the look of film stocks. Currently many users use the ARRI Alexa profile for the NX1 which gives great results but a profile built from the ground up will certainly give us better results. Upon reaching out to the FILMCONVERT team they have been very responsive and a pleasure to communicate with. They did mention however that the recent Samsung pull out is affecting their ability to get a camera but they can resolve that issue. I am starting this thread because judging off the response from the FILMCONVERT team if we show that there is an active community of us interested in their software it is very realistic we will get support from them with a profile to use in their software. please let us all email them to make this dream a reality ! **copy & paste** "I am a proud user of the Samsung NX1 & FILMCONVERT and I would love to see a profile built for the camera." support@filmconvert.com and please attach a link to this forum post. Thank you ! Lets make this happen !

    Lenses

I love the look of Takumars but I would be very careful with vintage lenses on the NX1. I find that it needs a very high resolving lens. It seems like The sensor is optimized for their high end S line of lenses
  4. Sounds good. Can you produce any evidence that you are able to hack with the custom firmware ? A "hello world" would be enough to start funding the project
  5. Which causes more problems for you in post : low contrast or low saturation ? i am currently experimenting with low saturation , sharpness completely off and contrast at default with the16-235 luma range. The camera is problematic in post at 0-255
  6. Samsung capped the bit rate so you can pop the sd card into their tv's and watch it. They capped it to the max their tv's can handle. The nx1 is pretty much optimized for their displays You are on the money ! Again all we can do is add grain in post to compensate for h.265 agressive compression (of fine details). An increase in bit rate will probably benefit the image a lot more than then noise reduction is concerned but any of the two is more than welcome in my book. The NR and h.265 has made the rendering characteristics of my older lenses look plain ugly in out of focus areas when shooting video. Had to give em up for lenses designed for digital which the camera is obviously optimized for. Real love hate relationship with the nx1, alot of what i hate can be fixed with a hack
  7. what kinda grain did you use ? Lens ? damn this looks really good
  8. Could be. It IS downscaling from a 6.5k sensor instead of doing a 1:1 crop of the sensor. Could be how it downscales
  9. Its either h.265 or in camera noise reduction at work and you are right it is terrible. Its a catch 22 working with this camera : shoot with a sharp lens like a zeiss and you can retain more true detail and the noise reduction doesnt look AS bad but risk macroblocking due to the low bitrate, shoot with a soft lens and the camera jacks up in camera sharpening and you still have to deal with the noise reduction. I've been adding grain in post and the image looks much better but....how it looks on the web is a whole other story...
  10. I respect your forward thinking but please lets keep this strictly about the nx1. THANK YOU! :-D Good start ! Sounds promising
  11. Looking forward to the day fuji becomes a competitor to panasonic & sony in terms of video quality and features !!
  12. yeah dude I never shot with the blackmagics but if its anything like shooting raw with a stills camera I can understand how much of a relief that is when shooting. I'm tired of wrestling with these settings too but I am coming closer to establishing my own ideal settings. This camera is a lot harder to dial in a custom look than what it has been for me with a gh4 or canon but it's not impossible and I feel like I am NEARLY there. The 16-235 luma range setting has been a big breakthrough for me. Although I am still converting to LOG with 8bit color I really am enjoying the looks you guys are getting out of the camera. Currently 0 contrast with reduced saturation and the color balance at default has been giving me better results in post. I just apply an impulz lut and it works way better now that the camera is set to 16-235
  13. This is dope ! Im gonna try the whip pans until i learn the punch in zooms
  14. I suck at after effects ! Wish there was a plugin for premiere but either way this is good info ! Thank you
  15. How do they do the zoom in and out effect ?
  16. Have ya'll seen this ? Amazing piece of work the editing is incredible. Ever since Watchtower of Turkey I've wondered how are these transitions done. I know this simply can't be expert cinematography it has to be an effect. Does anyone know how you can do these type of transitions in Adobe Premiere ? Is there specific software you need to create these looks ?
  17. I solved my macro blocking issue at low iso. I simply changed my luma range from 0-255 to 16-235 and it made a huge difference. 0-255 gave the impression that there was detail hidden in the deep shadows and bright highlights. I feel like the way h.265 or simply the nx1 handles 0-255 range is ineffective. 16-235 keeps it all in a usable range and you don't have to use a curve to bring the highs down or to raise the shadows. I guess how the codec compresses the 16-235 range helps with the macroblocking. I then took the files in rockymountains and converted to prorres 444 and it graded beautifully even with a heavy LUT like deluts
  18. Haven't seen it in 4k but damn those shots are beautiful. The composition more than anything is jaw dropping. Mind sharing your settings ? Great work as always man
  19. @PannySVHS out of all the cameras I've owned I was able to push my gh4 the furthest with the grade. I've stacked two luts on the footage with no macroblocking and weird artifacts. My only issue was the noise but that shouldn't be a problem especially in comparison to the other artifacts you get on other cameras. Blue channel clipping on the Sony line which makes it unusable for club, concert and even shooting a city at night macroblocking, sharpening and noise reduction artifacts of an otherwise dope camera like the NX1. Stack LUTS on an nx1 and you'll see the artifacts quickly pop up
  20. @Ebrahim Saadawi If shooting flat works for you fine, I still highly advise againt it with 8bit cameras. Flat especially on gh exaggerates noise. As far as the speedbooster is concerned I really just want to know if people think the benefit of the extra stop, resolution and field of view is apparent and how does it compare to a true s35 sensors. If I can get an identical field of view as my s35 NX1 with an extra stop a gh4 or gh5 (down the line) will replace my NX camera
  21. damn sounds like we can make a breakthrough any minute now !
  22. Natural with -4 contrast, -1 saturation sharpness and noise reduction all the way down is my prefered "flat" image
  23. Nah bro my style is to get the look as close as possible in cam than push it a lil further with the grade. Makes sense to get 75% of the look when shoot 8bit instead of shooting "25%" super flat and undersaturated to get to the same finished look ! Yur damaging the footage. Cinelike V on GH4 and Gamma C on NX1 is the secret sauce
