  1. I do like that DR has become an important factor. The problem now is having such a range with only 8 bits per channel. You might be able to grade the image to achieve specific colors, but the color tonality will be near impossible to get. I just hope now camera companies implement 10 bit internal encoding on high dynamic range cameras such as the A7sII.

  2. "How HDR video recording works
To achieve true HDR video recording, the advanced Exmor RS camera sensor in Xperia Z changes the exposure every two lines of pixels. This creates a spatially varying exposure (SVE) array image, which is then used to make an image that is perfectly exposed in both dark and light areas.
To simplify the concept, for each frame the camera shoots one picture with two different exposure levels at the same time, one light and one dark. Then, an intelligent software algorithm is used to combine (synthesize) the two shots into one picture, pixel by pixel. This allows you to see the details of both the dark and the bright parts of the picture."

I can't think of how an intelligent software algorithm can combine lines of pixels with different motion blur. If they try something like that then yes you would be right. I just think it would be much more straight forward to have different iso sensitivities.

  3. If you don't need it now, wait a couple of months for the A7sII. Or wait for high iso samples from the A7rii. There are not that many choices for high sensitivity internal 4k small cameras. Maybe the new BM Ursa mini 4.6k sensor is going to be great but that starts at $5k and can get more expensive easily plus it is probably too big for the average steadycam.

  4. "S-Log2 Gamma setting:

This proprietary Sony setting featured in professional camcorders creates a 1300% wider dynamic range for smooth gradation with reduced whiteout and blackout. Use color grading in post-production to make the most of low-noise images and super-rich detail to express footage in various ways. ISO 800 or higher is available when S-Log2 Gamma is selected"

There is some plastering for the DR at least :)

  5. "Unrivaled 4K Movie Shooting Performance

The impressive video credentials of Sony’s new α7R II camera include the ability to record movies in 4K quality (QFHD 3840×2160) in either Super 35mm crop mode or full-frame mode.
In Super 35mm mode, the camera collects a wealth of information from approximately 1.8x as many pixels as 4K by using full pixel readout without pixel binning and oversamples the information to produce 4K movies with minimal moire and ‘jaggies’.

In full-frame mode, the α7RII utilizes the full width of the 35mm sensor for 4K recording, allowing users to utilize the expanded expressive power of the sensor.  It is the world’s first digital camera to offer this in-camera full-frame format 4K recording capacity1.

The camera utilizes the advanced XAVC S7 codec during video shooting, which records at a high bit rate of 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting.
Additionally, the α7RII model features a variety of functions to support a professional video workflow including Picture Profile, S-Log2 Gamma and S-Gamut, 120fps high frame rate movie shooting in HD (720p), time code, clean HDMI output and more."

    That sounds very promising..

I just hope the stabilization works better than the A7ii

  6. So, video quality-wise, how does the EM-5 II compare with the GH3?

For things that are moving, are at close range, not large depth of field it will be hard to see a difference. For static shots with detailed scenes gh3 has a clear advantage.

The code in the emii allows for some grading which I wouldn't claim for em1.

In my opinion stabilized video is very important for the quality of the video and doing it rigless is right now only possible with em5ii. I would suggest before you sell your gh3 to try the em5ii and shoot what you actually want to shoot and not test scenes.

I've never used the EM-5 but GH3 is a great camera. The sensor stabilization on the EM-5 might be great for run n' gun. Check out the review here

Great points but I wouldn't call that a review ;). Better read his em1 review and keep in mind that as far as video goes the em5ii has a much better codec, improved video stabilization, focus peaking ,audio levels, ability to change exposure during video, clean hdmi out, and flip out screen.

  7. There must be a way to express something more comprehensible to the less involved that isn't so highly accurate, but still does the trick, don't you think?

Would really make sense nowadays, I believe. With the exploding megapixel counts of sensors and everything.

Nikon has golden rings, canon has L letters, sigma has the art series...

I would prefer instead for the average user to use their brain a bit better than have a company find better ways to "advertise" their products.

  8. No offense to the YouTube author above, but why is Panasonic giving him a preview of LOG? The 2 videos that I saw from him were average to poor in quality.

People complain for the skin colors of A7s but the skin colors with vlog of gh4 looks like crap compared to the A7s.

  9. Who is launching this on kickstarter first?

a small hand grip with back LCD that goes INSTEAD of the LPE6 on the camera back and screw in the bottom mount. And you now put the LPE6 inside the grip.

just imagine a perfect pocket camera, you remove the grip/lcd when used on drone or helmet.

If I had resources I would launch that right away, can't belive black magic did not think about it.

BM should be the ones to do it.

I guess they didn't think about it?

  10. and do you really want a successor to make the older version left with no support & obsolete, and then the same again next year - one year cycles for cameras is a nightmare, and Sony seem to be pushing that - be careful what you wish for

Well unless they can add IBIS or internal 4k via a firmware update, then a new A7sii model only makes sense.
