Chris, obviously this is only my opinion but I feel quite strongly you should stick with Canon! Or at least not go with the GH4 ... The stuff you get out of the 5D h264 is really very nice and I think you've developed a particular look that works well for you. Knowing the stuff you shoot I think you also need a camera that's great in low light.

If you're interested in the GH4 because you want a camera that's more video-orientated and sharper, I think a C100 would be a great upgrade (will hopefully drop in price again soon?). Or the A7s would be the other obvious option (FF sensor too).

I really love this wedding film you made - for me it just wouldn't be the same without that full-frame, noise free, lovely Canon-colour aesthetic ...

just bought some more terra for my files, which i keep for ever and in some cases backed up. Who wants to shoot and then delete his work? lacie,WD, etc will have sales soar from all of us buying new drives every week. How do you back up 4k raw files, the costs are enormous, for something that needs to be downscaled in order to work to 90% of screens at the moment. On the otherhand 4k is futureproof. i am a huge canon fangirl, but this has to do with the complete product sensor+lens.

At the end of August canon will probably announce the  7d ii, with a new sensor, ...
is the GH4 is hurting the sales of the MARK iii? dont forget the mark3 is aimed at photographers too not only video
People who where about to buy the mark iii switched to the GH4 at the last minute, and the hype surrounding the GH4 at this time is the same as the one when the Mark 2 came out.
i hope someone from canon reads this. i really dont wont to switch from canon...but i do hope all you gh4 lovers drive canons prices down
can we have a cheaper version of the 1dc? i would be the first to buy

red stan's sage wisdom and advice on good and shit anamorphics.
1.small optics give you an easier life and nice close focus.
2.focus test your anamorphic as soon as you get it if you cannot get a sharp picture get a refund or a discount.
3.do not take any crap bull from a seller especially if he has sold you junk costing over 250 dollars.
4.if your lens has major damage it may be beyond economic repair meaning it could cost 2-5 times it's value for the repair.
5.with repairs expect a wait from 6 weeks to 3 months any good repair guy is always busy.
i had a nikon lens take 6 months for a complicated repair once.
6.explain to repair guy clearly what you think is wrong it saves time and money.
7.except the fact that some anamorphics are just not worth saving or repairing
8.many ebay anamorphic optics are the same optics being purchased fiddled with then sold on.
    if in doubt walk away.
9.if your seller can take a foto of the lens and put a lengthy cut and past bull shit discription with a price tag of a 1000 dollars plus.
ask him why he has not bothered to shoot through the anamorphic is it because it is soft : )
10.at least 35% of anamorphics need servicing why do you think rental companies and studios had camera lens service depts.
11.main problems optic to optic alignment issue giving soft picture.
    dried out focus helicoid grease.
dirty internal optics, fungus and external coating problems.
    lens separation.
a lens clean and service should optimize the system allowing use of faster taking lens.
why get stuck in the 1950s hollywood rut of f8-16
12.remember repairing a car after a major crash is gonna cost a lot more time and money than a simple service.
13.quality shipping box within a box method is a must.
bad shipping with several impact drops along the journey will give you a bad lens.
14.i did not like ending on 13.

When these things start to seriously affect their business, they will respond. They can happily keep making a ton of cash in the meantime.

The Cxxx absolutely dominate rental, especially the C300. Above that it's the Alexa. The Cxxx series have no workarounds. None! They just work brilliantly. That takes a lot to make, as BMD, Panasonic and many others have shown.

Truth is, whether we like to admit it or not, when they do come out with a 4K mirrorless it'll probably be the best one of the lot!

Agreed! It's not a Kubrik movie, it's a guy in bat suit who can even fly in it for goodness sakes! As for crossing the line, lots of editors actually do it on purpose to piss ppl like him off, just go watch Apocalypse Now again!

I've been trying some run & gun shooting with no rig, just a gorilla pod and GH4 all handheld.

In the process I developed three image profiles for the GH4 which I've assigned to the mode dial on my camera.

This is the first footage to show what the GH4 is capable of with the EOSHD Cinema profile.

    awesome, thanks andrew!

regarding Premiere: i just love it. not having to render anything in after effects because i can just drop the ae project in the premiere timeline is just a killer feature. i tried fcpx for a while, but i couldnt get used to it. and i think i never will as it seems to be for people who edit something from the left to the right. i on the other hand drop the footage in different places and fill the gaps that are left. with this workflow using fcpx feels like i have to workaround everything i do. i just cant wrap my mind around why i cant just import a second video layer and move the footage freely. i dont want to connect this clip to any other clip. its so weird to me...

The EOSHD Panasonic GH4 Shooter’s Guide is now available

8bit DSLR codecs get quite a lot of bashing for banding, and it is something we're well used too... A sky or a wall taking up half the shot with only 4 or 5 shades where there should be a silky smooth gradient with thousands of tiny steps in-between darker and slightly lighter areas of the image.

However one of the first things I noticed with the Panasonic GH4 was that banding was greatly reduced and it looked like my 10bit Blackmagic footage, even though it was still an 8bit codec (internally with 4K). Why such a turn-around for an 8bit codec? It turns out the 4K mode on the GH4 holds the key to hiding this banding... yet it is something we can apply to all DSLRS...

    Here's how...

Having it sitting for a long time, I said to finally give it a try, as until now it was impossible to get any info about it, or even so to find a video made with this rare beast.
Quick test of the Moller Anamorphot 30/2x, on an Oly E-M1.
I have to admit that wasn't that easy to work with it, it's big like an Iscorama, not easy to use just an anamorphic clamp and I always prefer smaller anamorphics to play with, so I don't have the proper rig solution for this Moller. But the image quality that comes out of it, puts it (at least) beside Iscorama.
Any comment is welcome, this lens is a miracle:

Thanks to my good friend Keith for doing this.  I conceived of the idea when I saw the announcement just 2 days before, and I'm glad he was up for the challenge.  I shot all of this myself, so it was a lot of hard work!

The Contax Zeiss Distagon 'Hollywood' 28mm F2.0 is a classic fast wide for full frame and is incredible on Super 35mm as well. Wide open it's one of the sharpest F2.0 wide angle lenses available and it has very little distortion.

The Contax Zeiss version fetches $800 on eBay but there's a $60 wolf in sheep's clothing called the Pentax PK 28mm F2.0 which has a fascinating story behind it.

if you are starting out get a set of 4 Red Heads and a bunch of LEE gels / diffusion for them , and bulldog clips to hold the gels on the lights.
you will also need some Lee diffusion too so you can control the intensity of the lights better dont be affraid of layering up your diffusion too , then adding the coloured gels ontop of the diffusion.

You can buy gels / Lee diffusion off ebay cheap get a whole bunch of colours and try different set ups to see what you like.
ie try Teal and Amber that is used  in alot of films now , amber on the face - teal on the back wall etc or vice versa !

I always back light and have a kicker too to help get edge separation.
How much key and fill you use from the front is all down to personal taste and how dark or bight you want the subject.

there are loads of youtube vids on this and 3 point and 4 point lighting

you will end up having lights around until you are happy with the look
so dont think you can just bash up some lights and hey presto ! you use your eye to get a desirable look.
