  1. Oly is dead. Fuji is bringing nice tech on the table (XT3 specs) and medium format, Panasonic is going FF and has class leading cameras (GH5).

This camera will be the biggest flop of the year. Oly brings nothing to the table and again, they will die.

    Bye Oly.

Hope not.  Mostly, it does look like a good camera for MY needs so I'll consider it.  Pretty good spec list.  However, one of my top priority needs is 60fps 4K.  It's just something I use when shooting.

EDIT:  Just checked the rumor site.  60p in 4K, so no worries there.

    LOL, I told you...

Very embarrassing. M43 has almost nothing left nowadays..

Very nice! Hopefully it motivates everyone else to follow suit. I knew this was coming this year. Canon may lose its number 1 auto focus title.

Looks like the A7RIII and A7III won't see the update though.

Yes they get the update it’s been announced officially (most features including continuous eye AF, animal AF, intervalometer...)

    comes in April.

Can’t wait to see what they got for the A7SIII

Canon was caught having unacceptable DR, then they fixed it in the 5d iv. Since they have publicly stated they are aware that they have to make their 4k better, I bet they will get it within 10% of the competition this year. They usually follow Nikon & vise versa. I guarantee if their spies hadn't told them nikon was releasing a mirrorless, they wouldnt have put out the eos r, which clearly wasnt ready yet.

They did not really fixed it with the 5DIV. It's still a full stop behind the competition which is not what I call fixed. It's just that in comparison to what they did before (their FF sensors with no better DR than a M43 sensor, which was really ridiculous) it's much better. Much better than absolute shit does not mean it is great, at all.

By the time they are "within 10% of the competition" and release 4K with little to no crop, the competition will be 4K60P no crop 10 bit internal already, and so on.

  5. For someone who owns a C200 and 1DXII and films his face then yeah, the EOS R makes a lot of sense. You can use the same lens, easy to match in post, the colors right out of the box need less grading than let's say a Sony. You don't need wide angle and you have little to no movement and you do not use slowmo (on the EOSR, you have the 1DX for that). So yeah that's a lot of sense.

Now someone like me who is not into one ecosystem, who needs wide angle (mountain/extreme sports/landscape shooting) 80% of the time, who needs slowmo, and who needs decent RS due to action well, the EOS-R is garbage, even for $500 I would not get one.
And while I am a specific case, I think most video oriented people do want decent RS, use their lenses without 1.7 crop and a lot do want slowmo too. So overall objectively this camera is an epic fail.

It's very good that it cant fit the need of a minority of people and specific use for sure. Hopefully they will release something with 4K60P and no crop. I love Canon bodies and ergonomics. My first ever DSLR was a Canon. I then owned the 5D2 and 5D3, at which point the competition started to be much much better.

  6. Sony A6400 is here. My point of view:

Uninteresting camera, with great new AF tech.

check the Sony video. The AF tracking seems incredible and they finally implemented touch AF.

While I don’t care about this camera I am happy to see the A7SIII AF will be great.

    I wouldn't call 1.18 a large crop.

    1.18 x 1.5 =1.77. Yep, that's huge.

In any case, I am not buying a FF camera to get any kind of crop. I hope the S1 will be 4K60p no crop, and same for A7SIII. If there is a crop on a FF like the EOS-R, then I am better buying a smaller sensor, with lenses that are smaller and eventually getting the same final crop.

    Didn't the A7s2 have ibis

Oh did it? Sorry. Again not my video just saw this random guy work, and found his video quite great looking and natural. In a time where we go for 4K gimbals and super strong AF (myself included) it’s nice to see what you can do with an old lens and basic stuff.

Well, there is always something better coming around the corner, I try and not obsess much over that or else you're just chasing the dream. As a working pro my only concern is what tool fits my needs now. I'm invested in a system, and i don't intend on switching everytime the competition drops a newer, better body. When Canon drops that pro body you're talking about well I'll upgrade to it, simple as that.

Limitations, i try and work around them, every camera has its strengths & weaknesses. IBIS is neat, however, we got along fine before it and no cine cam even uses it to this day. I'd hardly call it a deal breaker even if its a nice convenience. Canon's smart EIS (using gyroscope & 2 way lens IS com data) is a workable alternative & might even prove to be better in some cases.

For stills,  i look at the system as a whole: lenses, color science, ergonomics, AF, flash options etc.. that is what is going to get me the picture I want, not a sensor/chart comparison. Yeah Sony sensors are the best, but I still prefer what Fuji & Nikon do with them.. YMMV.

It's different here. The competition has been better for years for video as far as DSLR/mirrorless are concerned. The EOS R sucks for video compared to 2y old competitors that's a fact.
You are happy with it good for you but it is still a fact.

And saying that big pro cameras dont have IBIS as an argument for the EOS R to not have it... lol. Big cameras need less IBIS because of their weight and the way we use them (on big rigs). EOS R and competitors are small run and gun, IBIS makes MUCH more sense there.

For stills you are right, and the EOS-R still performance is not that bad. There is better with Nikon and better with Sony but it's not that much of a difference as it is with video.

I seriously doubt the "soon" part of your statement.

    Lol. I seriously doubt myself.

EOS R certainly wins most hated camera of 2018 award!

Yet despite it's on paper limitations and for sure poor 4K RS performance, its a camera I very much enjoy shooting with.. and the perfect B-cam to a 5D/1DX/C100/C200.

Canon did get a few things right:  the only FF MILC with a flip out screen, the FF MILC with the highest bitrate ALL-I codec, the most reliable and smoothest AF in the game. Those 3 things alone should give it some points. The IQ as stated is indeed just cinematic. That word gets thrown around a lot but the reason it applies here is thanks to the thick codec, alongside 1:1 resolution and lack of digital sharpness on default in C-log, paired with the acclaimed Canon color science.

Then you have the smaller things: Smart EIS, 3 custom movie modes, custom ring lens control, MF bar (works for me personally), touch & drag AF, MF focus guide, AF override..etc

Finally when the Vari ND adapter will become available.. well that could just be a game changer.

Now i do understand, none of this makes up for the poor RS or severe crop factor. So yeah dog this camera all you want if those 2 are deal breakers to you.

Just wanted to add some perspective as one of the very few owners of this camera around here. And FWIW i do think Fuji, Nikon, BM & Sony have all kicked it out of the park much further than Canon and certainly deserve the praise.

    Happy NY everyone ?

The problem is that the limitations of this camera are not just RS and crop. Even in stills it's far behind Sony sensor. No IBIS is a deal breaker as well.
Canon will soon release a pro level EOS R with no crop 4K and IBIS but it's gonna be 3.5K and at that time all FF cameras will do 4K60P 10 bit and canon will be far behind again.
