  1. @DBounce I've also experienced an issue with the GH4.. it was just a shutter angle display that was missing, but the camera required a reset....that's why the GH5 settings saved to a memory card is such a great feature....lastly, I only stick to Sandisk Extreme Pros and only use Panesonic batteries, except when hooked up to a Shogun on a rig....I then power off Vmount with an Indypro adapter to Dtap and the GH5 thinks it's running on AC power....The GH series is bombproof...of course it's not impossible to get a lemon, but your's sounds like a 3rd party battery issue...
  2. I would say if you want a A7s3 then just wait for it...you are offering both sides of the decision as to why or why not you should buy the GH5...just use your NX1 until you can get the Sony...how can any other member know, whether you should buy a GH5 or not...I bought one, and will certainly get another body...your needs will of course differ from mine!...your choice to make though.
  3. 1600 is safe but well exposed 3200 will work for a must get shot!...for shooting fast the GH5 is the ideal camera, but it takes getting up to speed with...I would stay away from Vlog at high ISO and shoot standard, Like709 or CineD...a problem that might occur for you if you shot in Vlog is that even the preview luts in the LCD are quite low contrast, so if a client was looking at what you were shooting on the LCD they'd get the wrong impression...the 1st 2 profiles would be no post and CineD a dropped LUT and perhaps a slight contrast adjustment....all very ready out of camera looks. Personally I like the results hooting in 4K and downscaling to 1080, or however you deliver the content.
  4. I went with the Tiffen Indy Pack of ND's all at 77mm and I have to say I could not be happier with them...I use metal flared hoods to standardize all my lenses to 77mm...My bigger Nikon AF-S zooms are already there, and a couple of cheap sets of step up rings, combined with the flared metal hoods work perfectly...good ND's are expensive...lens hoods are not...and they're dirt cheap on EBay! PS...I own the PL12-60 and shot my daughter's 6th birthday party on a GH4 (non IBIS camera) using only the lens stabilization and all looks great and steady...everything was handheld....I bought this lens with the Focus Transition feature on the GH5 in mind as an afterthought, but it's never off my camera...and to put the speed of the lens into perspective...compared to the 12-35 Panny, it's only 1/2 a stop slower at 35mm and you still have 25mm of reach left!
  5. Agreed...and the GH5 already gets you close to the EVA 2nd native ISO...I would rather have another GH5 and perhaps an SLRMagic anamorphic lens to go with the new anamorphic open gate feature...check out Ozark to see what the Varicam and 5000 native ISO looks like....the opted for a very cold grade, but no questioning what a powerhouse system the Varicam is...and the GH5 is quite happily in there with it IMO
  6. Yes on DVXUser the arguments ranged from people will misunderstand the M4/3 mount and gripe about it, when using m4/3s lenses, to professionals won't want to bother with adapters...it's all nonsense though...professionals want to use the lenses they value and that may not include any EF mounts....and anyone stupid enough buying a $7500 camera, and not understanding lens/sensor coverage, deserve whatever they get!...I think in reality it was a bad decision, made a long time ago, that they are now trying to justify/defend...it is the number one gripe about this camera....that said, I have no doubt IQwill be incredible....I just finished watching the first season of Ozark on Netflix...shot on the Varicam....and the shots they managed with the 800-5000 ISO are just incredible...this is the next Cine Camera IMO...it is just taking time....Arri has reigned for a long time after all...as for the EVA....the GH5 will do very nicely alongside the Varicam....Panasonic is on it's way, and it's not turning back!
  7. +1 on the mistake, on the EF mount...re IQ, I suspect it will overwhelm, not underwhelm at the price point....Panasonic is upping the game in IQ on ALL their cameras and the competition?....well, what competition?...BMD is their only competition but without the ergonomics....when greed gets in the way of innovation, companies should rightly get caught with their pants round their ankles?
  8. I think in the long run I'll wait for what Sandisk comes up with...over a period of years now have never had a single failure from their cards.
  9. Well you already have the first part covered @jonpais...as I suppose I do!??
  10. Hi Andrew....one of the best camera reviews I've read....and not just because I own one, but for the thoughtful way you laid out what's important for shooting motion....and maybe the most important thing for me personally in your review, was the part about motion cadence...the Achilles Tendon of most cameras....I knew that motion would be improved with the 400 bit all Intra, but that they held on to the image quality too, is such an achievement....Panasonic has now brought the GH line into Varicam territory with upgrades that are significant (actually considering anamorphic desqueeze huge IMO) I almost no longer consider the cost of the camera...it is a little monster by any cost measures really...and I love this companies philosophy of selling you the camera, and then continuing to build that same camera out to it's potential over time....like @DBounce it's making me think of a second one...I've already dismissed the EVA due to the EF mount, but one built out GH5 on sticks and one in the hand makes for a great production package...looking forward to your 2nd part of the review, and the Shooters Guide to follow some time....I think you'll have many takers as this is no camera for a beginner, but it's so capable in a package of this size, it's almost comical....again, thank you!!
  11. You're really nailing the 1.33 40...how heavy is the setup as you posted...iwhat is comfortable time wise for a take?....looks great!!
  12. I've seen Wolfcrows on the internet...of course not the guide....personally I just prefer Andrew's approach...which is the reason for this thread.
  13. Andrew...I think this is possibly the camera, that users can benifit the most from, with a comprehensive shooting guide...as I have purchased both your GH2 & 4 guides, I think you simply nail video shooting aspects of these cameras perfectly...so (1) if you're doing one, when can we expect it, and (2) can you also include an often neglected discussion in your guide, which is the ins and outs of shooting with an external recorder...there is much talk about what the camera can do, but as usual the manuals are abysmal....though the beauty of this camera certainly lies in the smallness and internal capabilities, the true gold in image quality, is utilized when one shoots Prores 800mbs to an external device...so for narrative work in a controlled environment, this information is much needed!
  14. I have a different issue than yours...I use a Shogun...and I can't select between 8bit and 10 bit...I have a feeling it's due to the complex menu system and some menu setting upstream of the HDMI rec output. Your issue may well be the same...the problem is most use the camera without an external recorder, so they never see these issues....I doubt it's an issue with the camera.
  15. Yes ETC. On the GH5 adds an extra lens to any of the lenses you own....in 4K....with a reasonably small crop...really what I had hoped they would do on the EVA1... with a mount that could receive adapters...instead I'll just save my pennies for the LT
  16. I've had no vignetting with the XL speedbooster...on APS-C...bought the 12-60 PL as an afterthought to try with the rack focus feature on the GH5 and have to say I love this lens...only 1/2 a stop slower than the 12-35 at 35mm and outdoors I appreciate the extra 25mm of reach...Although I don't own it, I think the Leica 42.5 is the best lens out there for the price....period...the image is ridiculously good...I own the Leica 25 1.4, and although the 25 has an almost 3D quality wide open, the 42 is just in a league of its own..regardless of M4/3, S35 or FF IMO...I do use my GH5 with an Atomos Shogun shooting to SSD cards in Prores 422 HQ 800mbs...the data penalty is high but the image, focus and exposure tools and my needs suit that combo...anyway...I think you will love this camera...it's truly a great camera to shoot with, and one where the potential is just beginning to get tapped!
  17. Great footage!...and in "Painters Garden" too....@Dbounce also has the 1.33 40 and has posted some great footage...this is an intriguing adapter!...
  18. The GH5 is a world camera...it is not regional....it can work in a PAL or NTSC region with the flip of a switch....if you need the code in a hurry, you can get it from anywhere in the world and it will work...I had my VlogL code entered by the camera store I bought it, and the GH5 from...if you have a relationship with a camera store, and they have VlogL available, just buy it and ask them to email you the code number...they can then ship you the card in case of warranty issues with the camera down the road...you can install Vlog the same day you buy it.
  19. Agreed...but he's shooting in fairly bright light so he's probably stopped down quite a bit...if memory serves correctly he's shooting on a 25mm 1.7...he mentions this as an anamorphic handheld travel rig...to get shallow DOF he'd have to use a strong ND..and open up the lens..when DOF gets that shallow, shooting slows down considerably....my takeaway from these clips is that this little 1.33 40 adapter could actually work in a narrative environment where you can then lock the camera off and get shallow depth of field, when needed, to advance the storyline...good reason DPs prefer to shoot full features around 5.8 though!...they get things in focus...I find this adapter impressive for $500 though!
  20. Perhaps if you read the instructions on how to install the Vlog code on your GH4/5 it will clear up for you how the whole process works
  21. More GH5 anamorphic footage by a DVXUser member....all handheld with the SLRMagic Anamorphot 1.33 40 adapter. The GH5 just continues to surprise!
  22. Leemings LUT in either CineD or Vlog is spot on...forget about what people post...everyone makes mistakes...it also comes with a settings manual....used it happily on the GH4....in Vlog to external recorder, and now on GH5....CineD when I have to shoot high ISO and Vlog when wider DR is needed...also his response to questions is very fast....something rare in the world of online purchases.
  23. It would be great if in a FW upgrade they made the shutter angle lockable...it's not that big a deal for me though...I have a checklist I go through every time I film...start rolling a second or 2 before what I want to capture and again after....check my LCD display...and adjust if necessary...as @DBounce said....these are only inconveniences....not flaws...I feel the same....I remember early VCLT complaints about the camera taking 20seconds to boot upWTF...all just part of the dumbing down of the human race I guess????...
