  1. The camera does not care whether it's a zoom or not....so if you're shooting at say 24mm on the Sigma, you calculate at 24 plus crop change on the booster and set that...if you Google this info, there is a DVXUser thread that explains the GH5 used in conjunction with a zoom and booster....but in a nutshell, you do not calculate the M4/3 crop....a 35mm lens is always a 35mm lens....if however you add a speedbooster at say a .64 crop, it changes the FOV of the lens...if you're using your zoom at 35 mm you'll set the focal length for IBIS at 22.4 with a .64 crop booster...35 x .64 = 22.4mm
  2. @Imackreath...just watch the video from the guy on the XL speedbooster you posted...I use the speedbooster XL with 3 APS-C lenses and IBS turned on and I don't get vignetting in 16x9 on even the Tokina 11-16 which gets down to 7.4 mm wide!...in other aspect ratios you may, but it's very simple to fix in post....Though I don't own the booster you're getting, you should have no problems, unless you're really stressing the IBS unreasonably and in that case a bit of crop in post solves the issue....personally I would always go with the widest FOV and fastest booster and fix later where needed.
  3. I had exactly the same issue....from your photo it appears to be a dust particle clinging to the sensor....a good sensor loupe is almost a must own....they are not pricey....do your research carefully regarding cleaning a sensor....I only used a air squeeze bulb and it removed the particle....do NOT use compressed air inside your camera.
  4. The image out of this camera is lovely....especially the colors....Panasonic has an excellent combination of cameras capable of working together now.... the GH5, the EVA and the Varicam....looking forward to what @Zak Forsman produces with this newest release!
  5. Mercifully those were the pre-forum days☺️☺️I remember clearly getting new speakers and the 2 days later hating how they sounded...on many occasions....mercifully I got to wallow in my misery in isolation!...it was a time that taught me valuable lessons though, that serve me well today with my film gear "problem"...luckily mine is a "lens problem"!!!....I'm very happy with the cameras I buy and also with Panasonic!...both in terms of their products they put out, but possibly more importantly, who they are as a company...and how they respond to feedback from their customers. Voting with one's wallet is one of the few ways consumers can excerpt some power.
  6. The other Pink Elephant in the room, is that we are approaching the point where any IQ improvement in a camera will become difficult to detect...It's like the days when I was obsessed with sound systems...constantly needed new speakers or amp or turntable, and the inprovements did not reflect what I was spending on the gear....at some point I started listening to music again instead of my system??...the same is true for these cameras....at some point one has to stop magnifying images to 400 percent and start doing something with them, or the acquisition becomes about the camera, instead of the content you create with it! There are some guys on DVXUser going through exactly the same quandary with the EVA1 now...the IQ is very good to my eye....the mount is a deal breaker...but these guys keep looking for more footage...and complaining about everything they see, while others are already shooting with the cam...I really believe we're close to the saturation point, where ergonomics, or the lenses you own or whether you light or not, informs which camera you choose.
  7. +1 Backing onto SSD for a project...in the case of say a feature, where no moving parts are involved seems much more secure....with the added benefit that one can always film to SSD in an external device like a Shogun at Prores HQ...capture rates far exceeding SD and SSDs are now far cheaper than say buying a RAID system, that can run into many thousands $s....Sandisk Extreme Pro SSDs are currently running $190 per 480Gigs
  8. I've used the rugged and the larger Lacie bricks...they both failed, basically just sitting in an office....I now use older versions of this 2 TB drive and they are indestructible (so far) and power off the laptop...below is the newer version...now also available in 5TB https://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Porsche-Design-Mobile-STFD2000402/dp/B01DHFNC04/ref=pd_sbs_328_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3G9KWDXKY2RGC44YX4TG
  9. I agree with @Orangenz on this...it's very easy to do...I have a little Olympus TG5 where you can only trigger video from the movie button and it's always user error on my part....(1) there is a way to test for this...stop and start on the camera at home until you fill up the cards..3 second clips...trigger record from the main shutter release button, not the little movie button....if you can repeat the problem, you can contact Panasonic...(2) this is perhaps the most important....roll for a few seconds on EVERY take before action....that's what was done in the days of film when 5 seconds cost real money, but it allows sound to sink, everything to get up to speed and most importantly, you get to see that the camera is running properly for that take...it's good practice on any shoot and you get the take every time.
  10. Yes...at the price the quality both image and build wise is excellent...picked mine up used but basically brand new from a guy on Personal View for $650!
  11. You do not dissapoint in your never ending ways of seeing a negative in Panasonic? Or just the GH5s?....so instead of Panasonic being the first to deliver 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording in a hybrid 2000 camera, you turn this into a must develope feature by Panasonic to make up for their failure in Vlog with the GH4....I glanced at a thread on the 5DM3 and ML once....a video clip in which the banding and rolling shutter was so bad as to be unusable IMO....as I have no interest in the camera, I saw no reason to comment on it....do you want a GH5 or do you just want to hate it?
  12. @Andrew Reid....It's an interesting idea though...what Edward Burns (Brothers Macmillan) does is, they have a film crew who all own interest in every project...a skeleton crew...it requires having some money up front by everyone involved...they write, produce and make each film themselves as a team, and sell it, presumably to a Streaming service like Netflix or Amazon, and everyone takes their proportional cut and on to the next. With today's gear, this concept is now entirely possible...anyway, he talked about this in an interview of a model by which Indy filmmakers could keep working steadily....I suppose Roger Corman was the precursor to this model...but these concepts have great merit for the right team!
  13. It was on EOSHD....the general sense was if using with APS-C lenses, and you want to play it safe, use the Ultra....most of my lenses are full frame, but I do have the Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 18-35....APS-C....regardless my choice would not have changed....so somewhere several pages back the thread exists
  14. @EmanuelI did not keep my test...also I only tested in 16x9, but lastly and perhaps most importantly, I really do not move a camera much...so I used IBIS instead of a tripod...I would only ever pan if I was following an actor...and strictly narrative, so for my purposes the XL is a no brainer....an extra 1/3 stop...huge if you're looking at the difference above 3200iso and the widest FOV...I can always crop a little in post if need be, and still have the extra speed from the XL over the Ultra...I posted this in another thread on the 2 speedboosters.
  15. That's curious...I just did a quick test in my living room when contemplating the PL8-18 and did not see it...unfortunately deleted the clip, but if it's there, it has to be very slight.
  16. I use the Speedbooster XL on the Tokina 11-16 APS-C...hand held with IBIS on, I get zero Vignetting and it gets me down to 7.4mm at f1.8, so very fast and very wide!...I did consider the PL 8-18 for a bit, but I find 12 mm already wide on the GH5 (I own the PL 12-60), so for the rare occasion I need wider, I already owned the Tokina and it's 1 1/3 stops faster....I remember previous discussions, re the XL or Ultra SB, on APS-C lenses, though at the time, I felt it was easy enough to do a small crop in post and the wider FOV and extra 1/3 stop was significant with the XL...also no issues with the Sigma 18-35...these lenses are Nikon mount and on a tripod the results are the same...I had initially thought it might be an issue with handheld, but there's none.
  17. Took the original Blade Runner a long time to get legs....it was considered a box office bomb at the time, but in many respects it's become a reference film for great filmmaking...the 400 million for marketing could well be part of the "Hollywood Accounting" strategy. It seems like a ridiculous amount of marketing...though I haven't seen it yet, the budget for making a film like this seems in line.
  18. I'm not really following this....are you suggesting that regardless of which camera you buy from Panasonic, or what you pay for it, all their cameras should be capable of the same features and IQ?
  19. I agree, it's not the Varicam...but neither is the GH5, and I would use the 3 together without hesitation...for me it's a problem with the EVA mount...but reading between the lines, the good out of the camera IQ, more than does it for me, and for my use, the good is what I would be interested in. My biggest problem with the camera really is, if I needed better ergonomics than the GH5, it would be the LT...with the GH5 used as BCam....so for my use this camera does not fit a slot...and I think this camera was definately designed for narrative work, not run & gun or weddings....there are much cheaper and more forgiving cameras for that purpose!
  20. Completely agree with @IronFilm on this....$2000 yes....but $7000 or 10,000 or 20,000 has to pay for itself....good lenses are so much more important IMO to spend your money on, which is what I invest in long term...also +1 on the F3...a beautiful image for what you spend, if you want a Cine camera specifically, instead of a hybrid. Also the BMD micro camera produces a stunning image...far below the cost of $7000, as do a multitude of other cameras.
  21. Yes, agree...the image out of the camera is lovely...very detailed...And I've seen enough great shots from the camera, that I would have rseriously considered it...but the EF mount is of no interest...perhaps in a version 2 of the EVA, they will address that need!
  22. I'm also noticing that every time I visit the site, it requires me to sign in again?....And yes, I already have the remember me box ticked off.
  23. I would just stay with this....it takes a couple of days to get used to, and then it just becomes the norm....curiously though, it signed me out and I had to request/submit a new password.
  24. For my taste the image out of the EVA1 is fantastic....to bad about the mount, but image wise it's what I'd be looking for!
