Lol each week a new cow is chased through the village. just like people were all freakin out when the bmcc was announced, just to find out it wont be available for ages, jello etc. and then everybody jumps on the next bandwaggon.

the mkiii doing raw sounds superb, but lets wait till a big crowd uses this in real life conditions and checks this for flaws intensively. if it passes that, then i will get all excited.

lol, I guess all i have now is one more stop of DR!  It really does make me wonder if Canon might be behind this, They were finally feeling the heat from the BMCC, and maybe they decided to finally unleash the beast on the 5D3.  I wonder what they will say about this publicly.

This is great. Can we call it the 5D-C now?

For the most part, I don't think pros don't want to mess with hot-rodded cameras. The C300 will still be preferred for it's amazing out of the box IQ and ability to deal with artifacts.

Anyway, we'll find out soon enough. If you are right (and you probably are) Canon may freak out. That'll be fun to watch!

Just for the record NFS bug the hell out of me. They put absolutely minimal effort into their posts in an effort to get traffic. Everything is cut and paste from an internet browsing session and none of it is actual hands on experience. In other words, always someone else's hard work they are selling ad space around.

Frustrating to be testing and shooting with something, and for the surprise to be spoilt with such a poor attention grabbing article.

Forget 1440x1080 you can do 1920x1280 to the card at 24fps for anamorphic, I'm getting data rates upwards of 90MB/s to the 1000x CF card.

I don't agree Star wars still has lots of potential with the right stories and director.

Abrams ruined star trek. He should have done what the next generation did and not try to copy Kirk and the first lot so his new approach could be tested. But they screwed up the trek universe with this.

They could have bought the real Kirk back and given him a better ending. There was so much story they lost by not utilising some of the original crew. It may even have worked better if Kirk and the crew had been made younger versions by some omnipotent being. Anyway the reboot thing was a bad idea added with a bad interpretation. While I agree the reboot has made blockbuster money I think that ultimately history will look back at it as a failure.

I thought the buffer has a write speed limitation though, independent of the card?  I guess you'll find out if you keep sticking faster cards in there and performance plateaus.

Still around $20K.  With Red, they could slash prices even further depending upon the market.  With the BMC 4K on the horizon, it becomes an interesting poker game.    4K is plenty of fire power for the vast majority.  4K is a lot more demanding to work with due to the file sizes.  How much resolution is enough?  Having extra dynamic range is always welcomed.  I find with the 1DC, it is plenty of firepower for my rookie purposes.  However, there is always room for improvement.  Cheers.

HurtinMinorKey reacted to mtheory in BMPC 4K greenscreen "should" be keyable?
Correct, I meant to say "optical distortion" instead of "optical image" in that sentence.

Those 4 center squares at the bottom are the sweet spot with least distortion, so an S35 will naturally take advantage of that.

Question is, will it make much difference visually? Only the eye will tell, I have an old Canon 20D lying around with a 1.6x factor, will have to make my own test sometime.

HurtinMinorKey reacted to Sean Cunningham in BMPC 4K greenscreen "should" be keyable?
The optical image won't be the same because the distance necessary to achieve the same framing between Full-Frame and S35 will be different.  The S35 result will match the 7D reference you're looking for.  The actual optical image of the lens is the same regardless of sensor.  Distortion is related to what part of the "optical image" can be seen and the distance from subject you have to be to achieve the framing of a sensor/film that's 36mm wide.

Faces are distorted by your own eye as you get closer to them.  How is a lens not going to do the same thing?  The theory behind portrait lenses and their reduced distortion have to do with how they render facial features  in accordance with how our own eye-to-brain interface handles facial recognition.  These lenses simulate how we see faces at the optimal distance for recognition (~15' I think it might be?)

At 50mm her nose is still quite pronounced, this lens rendering depth compression close to how our eyes see.  By 100mm she's starting to look like a model/actress and not just a semi-cute girl passed in the mall.  You want to know why some pretty girls could never be models or you see some candid photo taken of a working, high paid model and wonder "WTF?" it largely has to do with how that person looks with appropriate lenses and nothing to do with how they look in real life or standing right next to them.   @50mm she's not even the same girl as at @100mm, if you didn't know her personally or had familiarity overriding what the image is telling you about her features.

It should come as no surprise 135mm is where she looks best and this is a classic, go-to focal length for portrait photography.  This minor amount of distortion would be the same with a 50mm at a similar distance but now no longer framed for close-up.

By the time 4K actually becomes a mainstream delivery format it could be 5+ years from now. Even "HD" brodcast in the States is often 1080i or 720p.  I think everyone is jumping the gun on the 4K for future proofing.

Using 4K to re-frame, track, zoom, that makes sense. But it's more of a luxury, less a necessity at this point.

There is a reason why .CR2 files (which use actual loss less compression) are so big for stills images...

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you record a format, then compress it, and it looks the exact same after playback, then it is "visually loss-less".

If you record a format, then compress it, and you lose no information whatsoever (including detail that can't be seen upon native playback) then you have a true loss-less format.

It sounds like the compressed Raw is going to throw away some information.

If you funded the DB Kickstarter to the tune of a camera and if you pre-ordered the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at the last NAB, and haven't shot with either yet, just be safe in the knowledge that you're supporting the revolution if not actually able to televise it!

the pocket camera is at a price point where they will have to have subcontracted another manufacturer to undertake the work in the far east. i seriously doubt the pocket will be assembled by the same stretched plant who were assembling the original bmcc. At the price point no where other than the far east could handle manufacture of this camera within budget (I assume if retail is $999, wholesale is $499, and manufacturing is probably $50-100. Since the profit margin for bm is low, they will need to sell lots to recover development costs and start to see a profit. Hence they cannot allow it to get to a point where orders are cancelled. Only the far east could deliver the quantities required for an item of this price point IMO. The chinese plants deliver. and BM will have contracted a trustworthy plant and probably have australian techs in there full time
