sanveer got a reaction from craigbuckley in Is there a way to zoom with 20mm pancake for gh2?
The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a fixed focal length lens, meaning, that you cannot zoom in. The advantage that it offers, over a zoom, is that, you can get prime lenses, which are very fast (meaning, that they are very bright). This is great for indoor, or night shooting.

Thought, I haven't tried any video or other tutorials, myself (I read a lot of articles, by various users, from Cinematographers, to Bloggers, to regular users, apart from checking various videos on Vimeo and YouTube), maybe, these will be helpful:

Btw, do NOT use the 20mm f1.7, with Autofocus, for video. Its too slow. Otherwise its a nice and fast lens, and very good, for the price. Best of Luck, with your new cam.

Vitaly just makes Tall Claims. He has an opinion on Every programmer on the Planet. If he were so smart, Panasonic would have had him, on board, by now. They have their reasons. And,obviously, he has his.

 LOL!! Probably very true.

He did hack the GH2, and maybe, it made colouring and grading a little easier. But, the picture Profile is Exactly the same. Whether he says than in Russian, or in French, or in English. That won't affect the truth.
Yep...If they hacked the picture profile and made curves possible and got the I Dynamic function working properly.
I would buy two more, not just one as I am now planning.

There are no ethical implications to what a business choses to charge for its products. We live in a capitalist society where price action is governed by supply and demand. Canon's goal is to maximize profits. Demand will ultimately dictate price. As much as it sucks, Canon are under no moral obligation to provide cameras at a reasonable price for low budget filmmakers. Take a look at Apple. Margins on most of their products are significantly higher than the competition, yet the demand for them is through the roof.

Multi-aspect could possibly impact IQ if the sensor that Sony was offering was not MA but had better IQ than an in-house MA design (and they decided that IQ was more important than MA).

This sounds like a monologue, but, I guess, every camera manufacturer is giving us shit cams, under 5k. The GH2 is a miracle compared to the others. The Nikon mirrorless series is a joke. Its worse than bad. Both Canons and Nikon have insane moire and aliasing issues, apart from the very little lines of resolution. their picture profile is nice, but, it feels like those early day Handycams. The Sony NEX 5N and 7, are nowhere close to the GH2, at video. So, we haven't really gotten very far, from the last Photokia.
I did realise, after shooting a lot of videos, on my GH2, that the GH2 has insane FLAT picture profile, under certain ideal conditions. ONLY. These are:
1. Seriously Overcast Sky (though, not at very late, in the evening. Because, low light, ruins it).
2. Slightly Over-exposed (about 2 stops).

I guess, I'll just hold on to the GH2, for now. It has served me well, and it does some phenomenal video. At a fraction of the cost of the Alexas, the REDs and the Canon C series. The BMCC is good, but, its like a series of never ending investments, starting with SSD Drives, new wider lense, and much higher capacity of editing set-up. The GH2, for now, does everything at a fraction of the cost, and headache.

This pretty much is exactly what I feel, I'll just wait until someone gets the message and delivers something thats good.
I would be happy to part with $3,000 for decent DSLR video, but not the BMCC its far too Mac orientated, too much dependant on large (massive) storage, needs so much pimping up...the cost will add up etc..
The GH3 gets close to ticking the boxes, but definitely not enough over the GH2 (for me anyway) maybe when its released it may be better ...but right now...no.

After seeing the built and video quality (and features for sound), of the GH3, I am guessing, it will be noticeably more expensive. Maybe around US$ 2000, with the lens kit (or, maybe, a little under). That's just my guess. Also, because, This Time Around, Panasonic are gonna go All Out, to make sure it outsells (justifiably), all other DSLRs, that record HD Video.

It seems they solved all main issues (except rolling shutter).
Clean, detailed, with good range and no banding images.
72 all-i is really good, beyond competition's more expensive products.

What really I don't understand is why half of the short movies with a minimum of storyline end up in a guy running for a girl.
It's hard to belive that Bruce Logan didn't realize he was doing something seen so many times in the DSLR world since Reverie.
It seems technology is filling the gap but plot... so many times is poor.
Short movies could be excellent for puzzling stories well told in a handful of minutes, and a good one can really help the promotion message behind it.

"Sorry Andrew will disagree with you on this one. Now people dont forget this is just my opinion so need to insult me with personal attacks or fanboy defences.

The original camera run ONLY at 24fps What use is that apart from internet films and vimeo test fan films. Can't record sound seperately and synch it without steps. Only useful for making films to transfer to celluloid if you could afford it and were dumb enough to do it as AVCHD at 8 bit 4,2 0 and 23mbps put paid to any of that.

So zero use as a film camera and zero use as a normal one.

They did upgrade it to 25fps MUCH later on AFTER Vitaliys hack and AFTER everyone had been crying out for 25p.

The camera was intentionally crippled surely we can all see that. How could Vitaliy, Driftwood, manage to get so much more out of it if this were not the case. Working on the assumption it was deliberatley crippled you have to ask what has changed and then have a close look at why the GH3 does what it does.

Effectively it trumps the GH2 hacks and may actually stop hacking
Next it allows the four thirds lenses to carry on in case people might think panny have deserted it. I'm sure they will desert four thirds next time round though.

The GH3 is it an answer to the BMC or to the slew of new cameras coming out now or are they all trying to squeeze Black magic out and recapture what they are losing along with all their mates. Because what they stand to lose is the ability to drip feed cameras with slight improvements. Segment the pro from the consumer and maximise money by small upgrades year on year. Simply because its got so bad (The crippling) That Black Magic can take off the shelf parts and make a camera that has pro res in built and RAW Throw in software worth about a £1000 and sell the whole lot for £2100. NOW forgive me for being cynical on the way we have been treated and are being goat herded into our pens again. I would think different if the new cams just simply had 4.2.2 10 bit out and decent sensors NOT crippled with bad processing. Come on this has gone on long enough and beyond a joke.

I am annoyed with camera manufacturers and the way they have done business I applaud Black Magic and want to support their ethos I dont want to see certain maunfacturers herd us all back into our compounds with glossy sales campaigns and guru speel in order to do it.

There is no reason why camera manufacturers cant output 10 bit in fact they have to take steps to prevent it from doing so. "

Though I think, the hacks were nice, they weren't anywhere 'extraordinary'. The codec was still 4-2-0. The only, possible effect, of the code, was in grading, where the much higher bit rate, helped the video (possibly), from falling apart.

Also, the latest 4-4-4 Patch on the GH2 is exaggerated, again. It is Nowhere near 12 bit 4-4-4. As a matter of fact, the FlowMotion V2.02 Hack seemed better (IMO), that the Apocalypse 4-4-4.

Also, the BMCC and the GH3 are 2 completely different cameras, meant, for 2 completely different users. Till the exact quality of the video, coming out of the GH3 is not tested, in actual tests (as opposed to videos put out by professional DoPs and guys like those who apparently made the Nikon D600 video), it would be pre-mature, to compare it, to anything else around.

The only difference, I noticed, on the GH3, as compared to the GH2, is that, perhaps, those banding issues have been greatly improved (especially w.r.d. to the Sky).

I would not have believed this, till i saw it.

For everyone wondering what the whole fuss about over-priced, too soft, fast primes was, this may be the answer you were looking for.

Apparently, Mitakon has been manufacturing the lenses for SLR Magic, and that is perhaps, where they got the precise know-how from. SLR Magic produces the 50mm f.95 (actually T.95), which is Much Sharper than the Voigtlander 25mm f.95. The only issues it had, during tests, was the strong purple fringing (chromatic aberration). Otherwise, it was almost as sharp as the Leica, at a fraction of the cost.

While the SLR Magic retails for US$ 1100, for the 50mm f.95, the Mitakon 35mm f.95 retails for around 600 Euros (approx 736 US$).

Maybe its time, that Lens Manufacturers Stop outsourcing to China, and, more importantly, start reducing their unjustified pricing.
