It's not only bullshit, it's also how most, if not all, of the (digital workflow) movies you ever watched were edited.
Editors work with lower res files, often ugly looking with timecode and sequence/shot info printed on top.
Once they have a picture lock, they replace only the used clips with the high res raw versions, and that's what you use for grading.
Technology might catch up soon, but in the meantime editing raw files is cumbersome and hurts your editing workflow more than it helps.

EF mount even without electronics would make more sense to me as well.

I don't think they are doing it though.

It will certainly be in my feedback, if the Smart EF adapter is going to be a long wait. Don't think it is fair to ask people to buy a different Speed Booster for every lens they have whilst they wait for the delayed flexible Canon mount version.

More good news, my only issue with M4/3 was not being used to thinking in that sensor size. Well, that's gone!

What a jolly good time to be shooting!

The Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds gives cameras like the Panasonic GH2, GH3 and Blackmagic Cinema Camera a Super 35mm / APS-C sized sensor using clever optics, in the same way that the E-mount version turned cameras like the Sony FS100 and NEX 7 into valid alternatives to full frame.

As well as shrinking the image circle of a full frame lens to fit a smaller sensor, the Speed Booster lives up to its name by giving you a 1 stop increase in brightness so that F2.8 effectively becomes F2.0.

I've been testing the Leica R mount version of the new Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster on the Panasonic GH3 and here are some of my early observations.

I've only ever tried porting to After Effects once, but from what I remember, it wasn't too difficult.  I'll give it a quick try today after work.  Check back later, I will hopefully remember to post an update on that front.

That's right.  The last time I posted a topic here, I was working on a plugin that handle highlight rolloff better.  Unfortunately, that plugin was incompatible with many common tools such as RGB Curves and Magic Bullet's Colorista II (just to name a few).  This meant that it was less useful than I had originally hoped, so I abandoned it.

In order to overcome the limitations of my past efforts, I decided to create my own tool for adjusting exposure and contrast, Clean Contrast.  This tool uses the same technology as the last plugin, so highlights don't suffer from hue shifts.

But with Clean Contrast, I went a step further.  I was unsatisfied with the results I was getting when I added generous amount of contrast with the current tools.  I determined how these tools worked and I figured out why they were giving me bad results.  Adding contrast is a pretty simple task theoretically, but the colour-spaces that we work in don't favour an easy calculation.  And I believe that the folks at Adobe & Magic Bullet haven't realized the issues with their algorithms.

I hope people will find Clean Contrast to be useful and that they will consider using it for small and large adjustments alike.

Peaking: works during recording, can turn it on and off during recording, works in magnified view.
Auto ISO: works in A or S (and probably P)
Changing ISO during recording: works in all modes

    All shown in the video:

Just for the record NFS bug the hell out of me. They put absolutely minimal effort into their posts in an effort to get traffic. Everything is cut and paste from an internet browsing session and none of it is actual hands on experience. In other words, always someone else's hard work they are selling ad space around.

Frustrating to be testing and shooting with something, and for the surprise to be spoilt with such a poor attention grabbing article.

Forget 1440x1080 you can do 1920x1280 to the card at 24fps for anamorphic, I'm getting data rates upwards of 90MB/s to the 1000x CF card.

    Quick grading test (wetransfer)

    GH2 original - G6 original - GH2 curve - G6 curve (same curve).

    GH2 @ 1080p24 65Mbps - Smooth -2-2-2-2
    G6 @ 1080p24 24Mbps - Natural -5-2-0-5

ISO 160, same aperture and shutter speed.

I'm really impressed. Shadow detail from the G6 is so much nicer, as is the grain. Even in the unedited footage of the hacked GH2 you see some dirty noise in the shadows. With the G6 it's a fine grain.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. When I applied a little sharpening on the city screenshot earlier I was able to pretty much match the GH2 detail on the G6 shot. And like Julian shows it looks like -2 is indeed the sweet spot!

Thanks a lot for these tests, Julian. This is quite reassuring, I think I'm getting a G6 now. :)

...which in the case of this story, the camera made the movie look like it could have been shot on equipment almost none of us could afford on our own.   If this movie was shot on an iPhone it would probably still work to a certain extent, but it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as good.

I'm on a free Vimeo account, so only 720p there, but I agree the compression on Youtube sucks.

Probably will shoot some more stuff tomorrow. I'll try to upload some original clips via wetransfer.

Julian, can you upload to Vimeo or something? YouTube is very bad for judging image quality due to the compression.

This is great news. It appears that the G6 possibly performs even better than the GH2! (contrary to what earlier videos showed).

I took both cityscape screenshots and put them together for detail comparison. I sharpened the G6 one a tiny little bit to match the GH2 (which brought up a little artifacting), as well as touching levels a little.

GH2 on the left, G6 on the right.

    Hope is back.

Does the magnified focus assist still work when a monitor is plugged in via HDMI? That was a big problem with the GH2.

I did read your post, my point was just that some of the GH2 footage that Panasonic uploaded looked quite soft, which points to the fault being on their end. Granted, the GH2 with 12-35 f/2.8 video I posted is a bit sharper than the G6 demo, but barely.
I shouldn't have been such a smartass about it, sorry about that.

I shot hacked with Moon Trial 5 at HBR (60Mbps). Might do more tests later. But it already looks pretty good for the G6 I think, so if I don't have to 'unhack' my GH2 I might keep it this way. On the other hand, I should try some more/other hacks.. so If I find the time :)

I'm planning on making some screendumbs so you can see the actual quality, the youtube compression is pretty harsh. Don't have time now, but here are some examples (make sure you see the full res 1080p image).

    G6 on top, GH2 below. ISO 3200 and 160.
No tripod, so not a perfect test.

The ISO3200 example is sorta academic, to me.  I'd rather see more realistic comparisons at something like 640/800 where too much above that you're pretty much in a horrible lighting situation and just hoping you get an image you can use and then it becomes a contest of "which camera would I rather have when I'm not lighting anything and my light is shit?", more or less.

Some differences between the ISO160 examples could also come from the Standard profile reportedly not giving a correct exposure for medium gray on the GH2.  According to Shian Storm (ColorGHear) and his tests with scopes and handheld light meter (unconfirmed yet myself) only Nostalgia measures medium gray exposure @ 50% and the others are closer to 40%.  Perhaps they fixed this anomaly in the G6?

The Cinema EOS line would not suffer. Which pro with $$$$$ to spend needs a hack? They need reliability. They need ergonomics. They need standardisation. Image quality is important but only one factor. Canon are wrong if they think DSLR video will cannibalise their C300 and C500. Maybe the 1D C would suffer... But I can't see someone like Philip Bloom selling his C300 and going back to a DSLR + Magic Lantern just for image quality.

For the creative bandits like us who just want world beating image quality and are willing to be brave, the hack is perfect.
