  1. The image making business is reliant on gut reaction. When I watch a film or listen to music or taste food, I have an immediate reaction to it. I'm certainly not thinking about the team of pros behind it or why they say I should like it. Seems like what you're really saying is 'you might not like it now but you'll get used to it'. Actually I don't dislike it (otherwise I would cancel my order) and I am used to it because that super sharp, super real style of imagery has been around for a while now. In fact BMDs take on it with this camera is a lot better than most. I just wish the image from the sensor was a little more organic looking out of the box. That's all.
  2. Musical analogies aside, there seem to be a lot of people who feel the same way I do. It would be a good idea for BMD to release a 'nostalgic' look video to show that the classic Pocket look can still be achieved with the new one.
  3. I admit I am nostalgic for the celluloid look which I see as the gold standard. It's impossible not to have a gut reaction to images and my reaction to the BMPCC4K was that they had lost something special and that they now have something of the sterility of a lot of other digital cameras around these days. I'm not hating it. They are still beautiful images (with superb colour) and I am buying the camera. It's like I was expecting an electric guitar but turns out I'm getting a synth. Of course you can still make incredible music on either...
  4. I love the look of the Ursa Mini Pro. It looks organic and film like to me - so I don't think resolution is a factor. I even liked what I was seeing from the BMPC4k despite it's limited DR. I guess it all comes down to the sensor. Agreed those colours and skin tones are excellent.
  5. I have to agree with this. The original Pocket had a beautiful organic look reminiscent (to me anyway) of celluloid - even without grading, in fact even when it was in 'video' mode. I am disappointed to see that the Pocket 4K footage has more of a digital aesthetic - albeit with beautiful colour science. I was hoping for an image closer to what we usually see from BMD cameras rather than the Panny /Sony look. I'm not going to cancel my pre-order because it is still a beautiful image and incredible value, but I will definitely be hanging on to my original Pocket.

  7. Off-topic: That photo is of Matt Davis who was a really good bloke. He was active on the dvinfo forum dispensing lots of useful advice usually with a sense of humour. Ask him a question in a private message and he'd take the time to write an in depth reply worthy of a magazine article. Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago. I still have my C100 set up according to his 'cheat-sheet'. I chatted to him a few times at a couple of expos he gave talks at. A really nice guy sadly missed.
  8. It happens. In the very early days of flatscreen HD TVs, I bought a very expensive Sony Bravia with 'Reality Engine' blah blah. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first watched a closeup of a face on it. As the person talked, the eyes, nose and mouth would move slightly out of synch with each other. I went through all the settings but couldn't get rid of the slightly trippy effect. Needless to say I didn't have the TV for long and went back to having a CRT tv until the flatscreen tech was good enough. I decided then that being an early adopter was not necessarily a good idea. I have pre-ordered the BMPCC4K though ? If it overheats, you can always eat it.
  9. Take a look around on this forum (particularly the blackmagic sub forum) and you will find lots of similar posts under many different user names. They will all include a line like 'I didn't find the solution on the internet' and then give 'reference links' which are spam. They probably get paid each time the link is clicked on The query itself is copied and pasted from a genuine post from 4 years ago on the official blackmagic site forum
  10. I always focus manually anyway. So for twice the price, I'd rather have two of the current BMPCC4Ks.
  11. Quadraphonic sound https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadraphonic_sound Or maybe - an amp that goes up to 11.
  12. That's great and very useful information. Unfortunately it's no good to the original poster who is a spammer (or a spambot). But all good advice to anyone reading it. And I for one found it interesting that you 'only' film in ProRes LT. The results are incredible for such a relatively lowly codec. Does this also go for film's you made with the BMCC like Shadow Warriors?
  13. Interesting. Would this be backwards compatible with CineLikeV or CineLikeD on the G80 / G85?
  14. Me too - but I've also been offered a lucrative editing job for next week so I'll probably have to miss the show.
  15. I suspect the Pocket 4K might make an appearance in London next week at the Media Production Show: https://www.mediaproductionshow.com/
  16. In case anyone is still interested in what the Max Mara video was shot on, I just heard back from Chris Bernabeo who was kind enough to reply to my email enquiry. He said he didn't shoot it but he does work for the director. He confirmed "it's a mix of HD digital (most likely on an Arri Alexa) and 16mm film on a Bolex." So now we know.
  17. The biggest problem by far with Blackmagic cinema cameras is they tend to attract a lot of spam. I'm hoping there will be a firmware update to fix this.
  18. I also did some research, found Cass Bird and I have already emailed her earlier today asking her about the video. Well done on finding the potential cinematographer. It's looking very likely that you were right... EDIT: looks like he got that Bolex:
  19. Some of the Max Mara video may have been shot on film but I still think it's mostly digital. You can do a lot digitally to emulate a film look these days.
  20. This gave me a laugh: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1368143/Wedding-videographer-ordered-pay-compensation-dreadful-350-video.html
  21. To me it looks like Canon DSLR footage (possibly using the Cinestyle profile) with Filmconvert 16mm / 8mm effects added to shots in post. Add in a smattering of Light Leaks and there you go..
  22. Kieran

    Lenses

That's some intense colour right there and very filmic too. Is this all Filmconvert or did you add a lut in there? Also filming in bright sunlight were you able to use ND filters with the Fujinn TV lenses? I can't see any IR pollution here.
  23. Jon, you obviously have a massive chip on your shoulder. Perhaps you have a narcarsisstic personality disorder or maybe you are overcompensating for insecurity and low self esteem. In any case why don't you get some therapy and come back when you are a decent human being.
  24. Im out of 'likes' for today so instead I'll say thanks. I still use the C100 a lot so I know what you mean about ease of use. Looking forward to what you produce with this camera in the future.
