There are too many associations with the cinematic look of LOTR. The costumes will seem hoaky. In my opinion, a movie like Tron Legacy would've been a good candidate.
Good point - right tool for the job and all that.
 2.
The future is here but it seems nobody checked to see if it looked any good. Shot with a 3D Red EPIC rig at 48fps, Peter Jackson’s return to the world of JRR Tolkien has been ‘stripped of the magic of cinema’ according to many who saw the advance press screenings by Warner Brothers. 3.
In the last few weeks the already large number of options for filmmakers have been shaken up. Current cameras all seem to fall into different niches. There are the depth of field specialists – 5D Mark III and D800 with full frame sensors. There are the resolution and raw codec specialists the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera and Red Scarlet. There’s the slow mo specialist the Sony FS700 and my personal favourite all-rounders the GH2 and FS100 which just keep getting better with firmware updates (the FS100 is now a world cam with latest one from Sony). What happens next will be a fascinating fight. EOSHD rounds up the contenders. Read full article
4.
Made in California – there’s a sensor that perfectly matches the specification of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera on the market. It is called the BAE Systems sCMOS (designed by silicon valley semiconductors company Fairchild Imaging who were acquired by BAE in 2011). It is capable of up to 100fps at 2.5K and features a global shutter, a sensor so powerful it is vacuum cooled. 5.
The problem is not which one is better between 5d2 and gh2, i am only concerned about the price drop that the 5d could suffer from now to july. You said something interesting, I don't know if we may discuss it here. The hardware needs for the BM, for example, as a imac 21 owner i want to know if it will be enough to start or if i need already something more powerful.
I think this decision really does boil down to larger things than the difference between the cameras. Lenses and post production hardware influence the look and working methodology more. So you need to decide what your budget for lenses is, which lenses you need to get the look you desire and whether you need the raw codec, 2.5K resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range from the BMD. 8GB RAM and editing in ProRes will be fine on your iMac as long as the CPU isn't too old. You will certainly need a LOT of storage space though, especially if you shoot in 2.5K raw mode. If you're shooting very long clips like at live events you're better off with AVCHD on the GH2. Don't worry too much about the 5D2's price drop it will not end up at the GH2 level. The old 5DMk1 isn't even that cheap yet and that is nearly 7 years old!

Best, Jan
This is self funded because I need to get the knowledge of the new cancer treatment out to the world, but self funded means no funds for real P2 cameras...
If there is anything I can do to help publicise what you're shooting about the cancer treatment, get in touch for an interview. P2 media or investing in getting the word out about a worthy cause? Nothing crystallises why high quality $3000 and $6000 cameras are needed better than this. Jan and Panasonic take note...
I have no intention to run my editorial past official lines but it helps to get in touch occasionally. Cheers.
You don't have to run anything past anyone, but if you just post gossip, you get the rep of just being a Gossip page, post facts and you become the goto place for info.  All depends on what perception you want people to have of you and your site.  Most journalists corroborate their stories from more than one source.
P2 media is desirable only for the very high end of broadcast who need the standardised infrastructure.
Well I can assure that the reason that we got the Emmy Award for Solid State recording was not entirely based on Broadcaster use.  The number of HVX200s out there in the Indy field far out number those in the Broadcast domain, by at least 30:1.  And its primary purpose is the reliability and robust nature of the storage. Best, Jan
Well I appreciate your time taken to address this, for sure. But we have a few differences of opinion, mainly due to different perspectives. The mass market who want pro video aren't interested in winning Emmy Awards. The reason the 5D Mark II is such a sales success is because it puts pro stills quality in the hands of the masses. What about pro video sub $6000? Nobody apart from the Lumix team and Blackmagic Design are truly doing this in the video world and innovating. I was far more positive about the AF100 when it was first to the market, for a pretty reasonable price relative to what Canon did with the C300. Since then better options have arrived like the Sony FS100 and Panasonic are not moving fast enough, they are being too conservative. I don't think someone at the $3000 or $6000 mark will be willing to buy as many cameras as they have pairs of underwear! Once you lose these customers you will lose them for a good 3-4 years. The AF100 currently just is not compelling enough, you need to listen to a much more progressive set of filmmakers and cater for them. DVXUser represents the old guard and consumers. It is not representative of what is truly happening out there in the sub $6000 filmmaking market place. The GH2's sensor (or one of similar spec) is being offered right now by Panasonic in Japan as a component to third parties, along with the ASIC. It seems Panasonic would rather foster competition than crush it. This is commendable but they need to watch their back. And by the way, I am more than happy to pay for good design! By all means have a premium line for the most compelling stuff - but put imagination ahead of the facts occasionally.

11-16mm Tokina F2.8 covers your wide angle stuff
&
LOMO OCT18 and rangefinder glass (also Nokton 25mm F0.95) won't adapt but you will still have a GH3 for that
EXACTLY!!!  for wider angle kiss goodbye to anything less than F2.8.  also this camera in its current state cannot be a replacement for the GH(X) series allowing you to shoot anamorphic & use lomo lenses.
You kiss goodbye to the full frame 24mm F1.4 look anyway on the GH2, this isn't much different. If you like the GH2 you will like the Blackmagic cam. Olympus 12mm F2 is a lovely lens but 12mm will never match 24mm for a shallow DOF. This camera is good because it is bringing a genuinely new option into the hands of filmmakers without HUGE WADS OF CASH. $3000 for raw video!! The sensor size just isn't a problem for 90% of shots. Shallow DOF and full frame is nice sure but it is majorly overrated. Re: LOMOs and anamorphic. Actually the smaller GH2-style sensor size is an advantage for most anamorphic adapters like the LA7200 and Iscorama stuff as it avoids the soft edges, and the egg-shaped corner flare of the Iscoramas. I also recommend the Canon 10-22mm EFS for anamorphic on the Blackmagic and GH2 as it is a very good match optically to the LA7200 at around 14mm.
 17.

It's a bloody shame that the AG-AF line is dead.  Panasonic have no clue on how to develop an eco-system, and their divisions clearly do not communicate with each other.
Let me say right here and now that the AF100 is not dead and will continue to thrive.  Where this sort of information that it is dead comes from is beyond my imagination, especially if you are at NAB. We very clearly have an AF100 area there. We also are showing a mock up of a 4K camera and we have a very strong story on the next generation of codecs with AVC Ultra which can provide for onboard recording of that 4:4:4 signal.  As far as developing an eco-system within the Panasonic line, I will point you to the fact that that is indeed what we do do.  May I point you to the P2 lineup, in DVCPRO up to HD and how about AVC-Intra, and in the less expensive arena, our AVCCAM.  All of these work with virtually every non-linear edit system out there.  The AVC-Ultra will be the next ubiquitous codec to work across all platforms.  I would appreciate a little more professionalism from the reporting staff here and ask that you check your rumors with the product manager in the division of Panasonic that delivers the product.  I am the product manager for the AF100 and I can assure everyone that it is definitely here to stay.  Best regards, Jan Crittenden Livingston Panasonic
It is clearly marked as a rumour not fact. My source's exact words were: "The AGAF100 is not selling well and they decided to delete the new AG AF camera release. The main reason is that they now will prefer to focus on Super35mm." Now I use my logic and say - S35 is the industry standard and I get leaks from within Panasonic myself, quite often. I also don't think Panasonic's approach to the lower end of the cinema market is working at the moment, because the AF100 gets beaten for image quality by their own consumer division. PLEASE Jan take a hint from Blackmagic Design and start giving us what we need. I have no intention to run my editorial past official lines but it helps to get in touch occasionally. It is my site and I report what I hear from the people I trust. Also a bit more conciliatory tone from you Jan toward the GH2 hack community wouldn't go amiss. Cheers. PS P2 media is desirable only for the very high end of broadcast who need the standardised infrastructure. For us, we're far more willing to pay mass market rates for media like $1 per GB for SSD from Kingston over the ridiculously marked up rates for proprietary stuff, like $3200 for the 256GB SSD from Red. This is the kind of thing which prevents camera sales.
 18. I have quite a bit of experience with EF lenses and 2x crop, with the GH2. EF 85mm F1.2L becomes a super fast telephoto, the likes of which is virtually impossible without huge expensive optics on full frame. 35mm F2 EF works well as an all-purpose medium-close-up lens, with a lovely shallow depth of field. Samyang 35mm video DSLR version has de-clicked aperture ring for run & gun. 11-16mm Tokina F2.8 covers your wide angle stuff. 11mm will be roughly 24mm on it. It is a fantastic lens and hardly any distortion in the centre crop. It is designed for a 1.5x crop sensor. That covers all the options really. Yes it is a shame specialist stuff like LOMO OCT18 and rangefinder glass (also Nokton 25mm F0.95) won't adapt but you will still have a GH3 for that.
 19. The GH2 isn't discontinued. The 14-140 kit likely is. I don't recommend that lens anyway for most people. Grab the body only and choose the lens separately. Panasonic officially say the GH2 will be in production until October when GH3 is due. I've seen this info on an official Panasonic slide.
