Introducing the new Sony RX100 - large sensor compact with 1080/60p
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras

dpreview has confirmed there is no 1080p24. Here is some more info. http://***URL removed***/previews/sony-dsc-rx100/4 "The RX100 allows P,A,S or M exposure modes to be used when video shooting. Autofocus remains available in movie shooting, regardless of the exposure mode used. Alternatively the camera's focus peaking can be used to aid manual focus (which can be assigned to the front dial). This, combined with the camera's active image stabilization during movie shooting, makes it a pretty capable and pocketable camera for grabbing footage."
Very disappointing! I presume the 30p is wrapped up in 60i? So in PAL regions it should be 50i (wrapped 25p) and 50p. I don't care for 24p as 25p would have been fine, but to not have 25p is very annoying (or 24p for those in NTSC land). On the plus side, this is the ONLY compact I know of that includes 1080 50/60p. It is also the only compact I know that offers full manual control over exposure, AF + MF with control ring, focus peaking etc. While it isn't perfect, it is streets ahead of any other fixed lens camera and better than a lot of interchangeable lens cameras. Also the UI is taken from Sony's SLTs rather than their compact cams, so I am guessing clean HDMI out like HX9v is out of the question... Plus it is in the WORST place I could imagine.
The HX9v did 1080/50/60p and there's also an Olympus compact that does it. 60 and 50p conform to 24/25p (50p perfectly so) and you also have the capability to do dreamy slow-mo. So don't confuse it with crappy 60i or 30p it is far better than that. Focus peaking and manual control in video mode is GREAT for this camera. As for clean HDMI out - not sure why you think the HX9v had that? It did HDMI out but it wasn't clean or enabled during recording. -
Need new samples.... it's been nearly 2 months.
The camera isn't actually ready yet, still pre-production.
I understand these concerns. As a 5d owner I'll hate to have, let's say, my beautiful 14mm sigma to become a 30 mm... I guess we will have to live with that, maybe sell some lenses to buy new ones.
Just to be clear here Gary, as a 5D owner I'm guessing it isn't the EF mount of the Blackmagic you have an issue with, it is really the sensor size. Different topic altogether.

Introducing the new Sony RX100 - large sensor compact with 1080/60p
20MP P&S is beyond overkill. I guarantee that 90% of the stills taken with this camera will not be printed. 12 MP's would have been a more practical choice.
They said 36MP was overkill for the D800. It wasn't. -
What are you talking about? Canon EF mount adapters are available for following... Nikon Contax Yashica (Zeiss) M42 LOMO OCT19 PL (provided no mirror, so OK with BMD) Olympus OM Many more.

I think I might buy one of these. or wait for the sony fixed lens apsc camera shortly.
I think this was the "APSC Fixed lens" rumor. ;)
I think so too. APS-C doesn't make sense for a compact because the lens would be massive, especially a zoom with a wide end of F1.8. I'm amazed how close Sony have kept this thing to HX9 in size. G1X was nonsense... Too bulky for a compact. Too shit for a DSLR replacement. -
Regular followers will know I’ve been a big fan of the Sony HX9v (shooting this piece on it last year in Berlin), a compact camera and the first to do 1080/60p. The video mode of this camera (and the G lens) were superb even though it had a small chip and lacked manual control. Resolution and detail was great and the stabiliser was out of this world. The updated HX20v is a bit of a disappointment, it seems like a very small incremental update. But Sony have just put that right big time with the RX100, their large sensor flagship compact, building on the highly regarded large sensor R1 of years ago but in a much smaller body. And the 2013 Emmy goes to.... a 5D Mark III CMOS sensor?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Chris Cookson, one of the Co-Chairs on the Engineering committee.. is the President of Sony Pictures Technologies. You just got to remember, people have day jobs.
Well that would explain why Sony won in 2010 then. "Lifetime Achievement – For innovation and risk-taking facilitating the Blu-ray format, digital broadcasting, multichannel TV, and 3D television." Seriously, you guys may as well be giving Emmys out to the highest bidder. All hail Sir Howard Stringer who presided over the biggest loss in Sony's history! By the way - it is healthy to have a cynical view of the establishment. Unless you are part of the establishment itself. -
It certainly distorts and undermines the credibility of these types of accolades. I dont know but has cinematic innovations like Panavision, the SteadyCam, THX, IMAX, Red won the same awards?
My thinking mirrors what you say to the word. Awards matter. Sad to see them potentially giving into corporate puppetry. Certainly if a C300 of 5D deserves an award then all those innovations you mentioned above are far more deserving. -

Cosina Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm F0.95 - official!
I'm hoping this has (positive) implications for anamorphic shooting as well. Andrew: Another trip to Spreepark with your LA7200, perhaps? :)
Good point about the anamorphic. 17.5mm is very close to the sweet spot of the LA7200 on the GH2. I've gone as wide as 14mm with it. It will look amazing for wide angle stuff in low light. Spreepark here I come haha. -

I'm fine with marketing, but it should know its place. It is weaving its way into all kinds of culture, and souring our lives. -
Above: the potentially Emmy winning sensor which I had to dismantle with cocktails sticks in an attempt to get acceptably detailed video According to Vladimir Koifman at Image Sensors World, an Emmy commission jointly headed by Canon’s David O’Kelly is investigating whether CMOS sensors should be eligible for awards. O’Kelly claims advances in the technology has ‘materially affected’ television. The winner of 5 Primetime Emmy Awards, House notably made use of the full frame 5D Mark II in the very capable hands of Gale Tattersall so it is true CMOS sensors and DSLRs have materially affected the look and feel of TV. But should the Emmy be awarding CMOS sensors? And why is a Canon guy on the awards committee?
Could the OM-D codec be intentionally crippled in a collusion agreement between Olympus and Panasonic to protect the GH line? Many of their products are complements to each other, and not completely direct competitors.
Unlikely. It is more likely to be a limitation of the Panasonic provided sensor or LSI chip. If Panasonic sold their most up to date technology to a competitor, they'd squander their advantage.

EOSHD at DPReview - final summary of 5D Mark III's video abilities
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
For LA7200, GH2 captures the best of it. For the Iscorama the 5D Mark III is interesting since you get a curving of the bokeh and a steady light fall off at the edges. I like this look. However, it isn't right to say one camera is better than the other for anamorphic, they are different looks. Actually I prefer the look of my 2x Centa Vision on a 50mm with GH2, than Iscorama 36 1.5x on a 50mm with 5D Mark III right now... The 2x stretch is more dramatic. This lens doesn't really work as well on the 5D Mark III because it has a smaller rear element. -
Well I suppose with Olympus with their back to the wall financially, they have to drive up the margins somehow. A mere hood is a very unimaginative and poor value way of doing it, and people are rightly annoyed about it. But the lens itself is a gem especially on the EM-5 with IS. Much of the price is due to current exchange rate / yen problems, not greed.
It looks like Vitaly isn't interested in attempting to hack the OMD. I've been very interested in purchasing the camera but the limited frame rates and sub-standard encoding has kept me from doing so. I don't get the sense Olympus realizes the enthusiasm they would generate by providing these features! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2071/olympus-em-5-topic/p1?Sort=newest
A shame. Need more hackers.
Thanks for the review, Andrew! You mentioned: "... and the HDMI output requires a proprietary Olympus cable not provided in the box..." Not quite correct ::) The HDMI port requires a common micro-HDMI cable. ;)
Micro? Not mini or standard? OH CHRIST not another one!!
-
I do agree that a bit more collaboration is needed. Panasonic have more experience in video than Olympus. For the interests of Micro Four Thirds as a whole they should be advising Olympus on the best approach and providing solutions. But the small issue of codec aside, Olympus are doing a superb job here!! The 5 axis IBIS, the quality of the new lenses, styling of the bodies, first with a OLED screen... All impressive stuff from a company with fewer resources than Canon, Panasonic, Sony or Nikon. And they feel like photographers tools too.

The full review will have a comparison to the GH2. Should be interesting. The GH2 is certainly better for video - but the Olympus might have the edge on colour and dynamic range - I shall find out soon. Really a hack could not be better on this camera... please lobby Vitaliy to do it, everyone!
