1.
Cameraboy Some speculation. Would that lead to the sort of softness we see in Genesis do you think? Maybe its got a filter for moire and aliasing that adds to the softening we have seen?
I am amazed people don't know the difference between 7Mbit and 72mbit. VIMEO IS A 7MBIT STREAM!! It was 720p even, until yesterday evening. Of course it looks soft and macro blocked and crushed.
2. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Sony sensor is 16.1MP effective, 16.9MP in total.
3. Regarding the sensor, the partially complete specs at Samy's hint at multi-aspect ratio, made by Panasonic. This Sony sensor rumour is just that, a rumour. I'll try and explore this a little more at Photokina and dive into the details, like whether it still has a 1:1 crop mode, whether the HDMI is uncompressed 4:2:2, etc. The specs say 17.20MP total pixels, 16.05MP effective. It then says '17.3 x 13.00mm IN 4/3 MODE' suggesting the sensor size changes to 19 x 10.5mm in 16:9 mode like the GH2.
4. Yes cinema Pierre, like that screened at the Skywalker Ranch for Coppola. You don't know it doesn't have a flat profile yet. You don't know if it looks better than the GH2 yet because you're judging massively compressed web footage at 7Mbit - not ALL-I 72mbit 1080p. Muppet post of the year?
5. I can't believe some people are complaining about the $1299 price tag. Have you forgotten what you're getting and what a big step this is up from the GH2? Blackmagic is considered a bargain at $3000, and it is. But the GH3 has 1080/60p, a larger sensor, stills, swappable internal battery, better low light performance, is smaller and lighter, likely better handling, more physical controls, the list goes on. And next to the Blackmagic after you've graded raw, ALL-I 72Mbit H.264 stands up very well with a fine grain of noise and as much detail. What the BM does better is 2.5K resolution, the advantages of raw for grading and likely an extra stop of dynamic range. Very different cameras but if the BM is a bargain then the GH3 bloody well certainly is. I love both personally even though I've not used either yet. My view may swing one way or another once I do.
6. Thanks Gary. The dealers seem to be making the best of the 2 units the UK received. I'm in Germany then Croatia until October so I won't be dropping in on Jigsaw24, I just want the shipping to start properly.
7. The skin tones look awful because you're watching a 7Mbit stream. That is one hell of a compression! Wait for Monday and hopefully Philip will be able to turn on the download option.
8.
I can see some emulation of the 70s Milk Tray ad and similarity of both this and Reverie.
!?
9. Rubber is bat**** crazy indeed! But I like it.
10. Could this be the moment Panasonic finally get the wider acceptance they deserve for the GH line? Here's the first promotional short movie shot on the Panasonic GH3 by Philip Bloom.
11. I'm not in the least bit sad because of a nasty comment on what was a very positive thread. I just think it is a sad situation. How can I stop this from happening again? Censorship? Ban? Humour him? Nope the offer is there to Simco, if he wants to continue he'll have to put his real identity out there and not hide behind a grey shadowy figure.
12.
Philip Bloom is "the face" of videography technology demonstrator, like the man from Del Monte they need him to say "Yes" because all the lemmings need to be told what is good and what is not by someone with an English accent. Quite frankly I find him condescendinig on his reviews and actually rather rude. Thats said he is pretty good at what he does as a filmmaker. Does Andrew feel the hurt of not being invited? If I was Panny I probably won't extend my invite to Andrew because he is too opinionated and goes off on a tangent like a drunkard on a pup crawl, not the sort of PR guy a manufacturer look for to promote their gears :o
It is such a sadness that you feel comments like this are necessary Simco123. You're entitled to your opinions but why make it personal? Our names are out there, yours isn't. If you want to stay in the forum I'm asking you to do a simple thing - change your username to your real name and put a real picture up there. If you don't do it before your next comment, I'll ask you to leave. Maybe think about your contribution and how useful it is too. I can tell you the value of that comment above - it is zero to people wanting to discuss the GH3. If only I had the time back from responding to off-topic slander on web forums, I'd be able to design my own damn camera.
13. A cheaper 5D Mark III from Canon I very much doubt video will be improved but the price should be more attractive. Thanks Photo Rumors http://photorumors.com/2012/09/14/pictures-of-the-canon-eos-6d-and-powershot-s110-cameras
14.
thanks guys. andrew do u think we ll be dealing with shipping delays again like w gh2? or were they strictly earthquake related woes?
For reference, related to your earlier question about AF... Contrast detect AF on the GH3 is faster than the Nikon D3's phase detect. The only flaw of CD AF is if you have a very low contrast area of the image which you're trying to lock focus onto, you will get some hunting.
15. The GH2 shipping woes weren't Earthquake related, more mundane than that - they allocated more units to Europe and Asia than the US. Mirrorless hasn't gone well in the US. Blame the people who see a BIG camera and think it is BETTER. Max... How is 72mbit too low for ALL-I? Trust me on that, it isn't low. I did love the OM-D in-body stabilisation. IS is important for some people but I prefer to shoot handheld with a shoulder mounted rig, the results are better than with IS.
16. Contrast detect AF will work for that, but you'd be wise to wait like the rest of us before knowing for sure. AF on the GH3 will be fastest CD AF ever invented but you're always better doing MF for reliability.
17. Time for the GH3 discussion to go in main thread I think.
18. Eh?? The hack never added 25p in 1080p. Also it is still 4-2-0 8bit with or without the hack and it doesn't put paid to filmmaking at all. I have learnt from experience that Vitaliy Kiselev is an overrated nasty little guy. I won't be hacking the GH3. No need to. I won't be hanging around his forum, he's unpleasent. The hack is overrated. It was nice on the GH1, it genuinely fixed that codec mud.
19.
No offence intended. My perspective is from making films. Not consumer stuff. The GH2 was perfectly adequate without the hack for me to shoot test stuff rehearsals BUT the hack makes it usable at a professional level within its limitations. As far as the camera without the hack is concerned to my mind its unusable professionally.
Far too much credit given to the hack there and not enough to the actual pros and shooters who use the GH2. The hack didn't magically turn the GH2 into a professional camera. Basically the main benefit of the hack is less compression and ALL-I. Image quality wise, the difference is actually quite subtle between the hacked GH2 and out of the box GH2 for most normal locked down shots. If you are throwing the camera around with a high shutter speed then yes, the image holds onto more detail whilst moving wildly. I also think motion in All-I looks subtly better. So yes the hack has merit but the difference is a lot smaller than you think.
20. It is both the sensor and image processor. Frame rate depends on how fast the data comes off the sensor and how fast it can be processed.
21. Lightpainter - your posts are unreadable. What are you on? I appreciate English possibly isn't your first language but please try and find a way to be clear otherwise you will have to go elsewhere, sorry.
22. Above - the new GH3 (click image to enlarge) First sample videos will be uploaded here - https://vimeo.com/groups/gh3 The GH3 will be revealed on Monday September 17th at a Panasonic press conference in Cologne, home of this year's Photokina 2012. EOSHD will be there when the show opens on Tuesday to get all the juicy hands-on details. http://www.eoshd.com/content/8976/the-panasonic-gh3-calls-to-explorers
23. There's must be something about engineering a full frame sensor that makes it impossible to do one that has proper 1080p and no moire. So far we seem to get aliasing and moire but proper resolution (D800) or no aliasing and moire but mushy detail (5D Mark III). Bullshit. With this Sony I am not too hopeful from the early looks... But still very important not to pass judgement yet.
24. Canon should give them full access to the libraries and support. Whether or not they approve it officially the project exists and people like it.
