  1. Past hour
  2. Ergonomics apart, how do you compare images from the two cameras? My friend was torn between the C70 and the R5C (For underwater and narrative use). Each ticked off several items on his checklist. The choice was so difficult that in the end he did not take either 🙂 Now both cameras are quite dated (not from specs pov) and a new version is around the corner so better to wait for both new and used.
  3. I've got a mate coming round to help me with the few shots that need camera movement or a focus rack. I can fill in the rest solo.
  4. Today
  5. I am sorry if my tone was too strong. I did not intend to offend you.
  6. i understand that you have made significant achievements using 5d3ml. i never doubt your professional quality. but ml is improving, it is amazing. i test all of my video cams by my own hands. i try to optimize each one, but 5d3ml is the best in terms of iq. as i said before, ml cams have severe rolling shutter, dr is lacking. but if you can control your shots, 5d3ml generates extremely beautiful color. some of my 5d3ml footage is no less than any hollywood level features in terms of iq. of course, my footage is just landscape, not comparable to the hollywood features' storyline, constume design, art design, etc. but iq wise, i am impressed with my 5d3ml footage more than amazon prime, netflix, or local theatre movies. i am not joking.
  7. Mixture of 8 bit and external 10 bit. The first location is definitely 8 bit.
  8. So cool to have this thread created. Hope everyone is well; haven’t been active in a while. Still love my Z6. Super nice 8 bit image and if you nail your WB grades very nicely. Neutral with I-dynamic on high or Nikon flat with I-dynamic (for very extreme scenes) provides nice colors, decent flexibility and range in post. Grades nicely in Davinci. Autofocus is usable, nowhere near what the latest Canons and Sonys can do but still really solid. If you can get an Atomos Ninja Star you can record oversampled 6k>1080p 10 bit 422 prores which gives a beautiful image and grades just as well as anything out there. One of the best 1080p cams for the money in that regard. 4k 10 bit out of the HDMI to something like a Ninja V looks great; the image holds up with really anything else (Canon R6 II, Sony FX30, etc) but it’s not my favorite setup in terms of ergonomics, weight or battery management. Nice to have as an option but I’d much rather have internal 10 bit log. That being said, the internal 8 bit is great most of the time.
  9. My magic lantern work was on amazon prime. It has also been shown in local theaters, and films that I shot on magic lantern won awards both in the US and abroad. None of it was high profile or anything like that, but I think my workflow was fine. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. You can like what you like. However, I would not consider my opinion to be uninformed.
  10. Not affiliated at all for sure but found this one a no-brainer, as usual BTW coming from that usual suspect, kudos to him actually:
  11. ml improves significantly during the last 10 years on 5d3. you need to have the latest ml firmware and mlv app, and learn the latest tricks to make it wonderful. it is fun to me, as i like this kind of continuous improvements, instead of begging for company controlled limited firmware updates. many times, the hardware potential is just wasted, which is to the best interests of the camera manufacturers.
  12. there is something wrong with your workflow. color of 5d3ml is second to none. i don't have alexa ev and f35 to test by my own hands. according to what the footage i see online or in theatre, i seriously doubt that alexa ev is better than 5d3ml in terms of color. dr and rolling shutter wise, yes alexa ev is much better. f35 is ccd so it may be even better than 5d3ml in terms of color. but think about other things, f35 and alexa ev are much larger and hard to handle. also 5d3ml can go to uhd 1x1 10 bit crop mode continuous recording, aps-h size, resolution is much higher. the battery life of 5d3ml is a breeze comparing to the gold mount bricks on alexa ev and f35. i'd say it is given and taken, instead of one side win.
  13. "The main thing to differentiate a pro DP from an amateur, IMO, is knowing how to light. Choice of cameras like the Alexa tends to be due to a feature set designed for a large crew, reliability, and having the most flexible image to hand off to professional colorists who also spend 80%+ of their time working on footage from the Alexa. This is one of the reasons that a lot of stuff was still being shot on 2.8k Alexa when RED had 4, 5, 6, and 8k sensors available in their cameras. " totally agree. the latest cams are very sharp, with a good dr, but kind of thin. if you compare to f3, r1mx, 5d3ml, you will feel it. lighting is actually the key here. alexa ev is enough for most of the hollywood level features, not to say indie shorts.
  14. i seriously doubt that c70 has a better iq than 5d3ml. i think c70 is not as filmic as r1mx or epic-x mysterium-x. yet those two reds cannot compare to 5d3ml.
  15. some trends never go. size matters. small sensors only bring to the table with the convenience, but not ultimate iq. in still world, people will laugh that aps c will tread 135ff or 645mf.
  16. I doubt about your work flow. did you try mlv app for cc? resolve cannot give you the same color as mlv app. i can generate extremely good iq footage due to its color depth and full frame. i really doubt that modern prosumer cams can do it. think about it, full frame 14 bit color depth true lossless raw vs crap codecs. if you say alexa lf or 65, maybe they win. for others, i really doubt about your conclusion. i think you need to test the latest ml firmware and mlv app workflow, optimize your workflow and skills, then decide.
  17. Interesting. When I felt it was time for me to go to a better camera I was seriously looking at the Ursa Mini Pro but the fixed pattern noise thing was a turn off. I also was looking at the BM Production Camera 4K, Digital Bolex, the Ursa non-mini even (which were like a full size VHS camcorder). I see the BM 4K Production Cameras now on Craigslist for only CAN$1100 which is pretty amazing for their image quality. I wasn't liking the poor audio quality part though. There are always trade offs with cameras. I ended up getting a deal on a Digital Bolex and loving it. It's not easy to shoot with but the results are worth it for certain types of shooting. I had a small group over for supper and a screening (projected) of my latest film shot with it and one of them, who's a layperson and not involved in film at all, said something like the image had a certain quality to it and wondered if I had a special camera or something. In the end I paid a lot but I'm super happy with what I ended up with. No FPN, good audio, amazing image quality, etc. It's also become a bit of a conversation piece when I've been out shooting. I've met a few interesting camera buffs that way. I think to compliment this would be something like a 4K camcorder with built in gimbal type stabilization. Sony, Canon and Panasonic all make similar models. I have an HD Sony (PJ650) that I love for its ease of use, stabilization and all that. We live in a golden age of so many camera choices and most of them are very good and much better than the few choices we had in the past. In fact we can even get super picky about minor details. It reminds me of coffee and craft beer. Thirty or more years ago it was all crap and now so much amazing beer and coffee is available we can look down upon very good coffee because we can choose super good coffee.
  18. D200 is good. Also D1X D1H. D2H D2X are good too, although not ccd, but not cmos neither.
  19. 5D3ML IQ is never dated, is still the best of the video cams I have, better than R1MX and Epic-X mysterium-X, only F3 may reach its level. Magic lantern cams have strong rolling shutter, so some of the moving shots have to be controlled. Also only crop mood cams have real time high resolution preview for most high res modes. 5D3ML has good preview in 1080p full frame modes, not in high res crop modes.
  20. As someone who has owned the OG S5 and uses an S5ii and an S1H, I can confirm. The S5ii has the best stabilisation (by far) and the best AF, (S5ii, then S1H, then OG S5) but actual picture quality, I'd rank them: S1H, OG S5 and last S5ii. But for anyone that doesn't need the stab or the absolute best AF, the OG S5 I think is a steal. In fact, the S5, S5ii, Z6, Z6ii and maybe some others, all share the same sensor, but perhaps with some individual brand tweaks. The S1H has an OLPF so is a slightly different beast but I prefer the still image results I get out of the Z6ii over the S5ii. There is not that much in it, but there's a subtle difference I cannot put my finger on except there is 'something'...
  21. It is what it is; instant access to so much information and answers (though not always factually correct) and we have to take the good with the bad. Or rather filter as much as we can which is easier said than done. I look on with mostly mild amusement at each of these latest 'the world will now end' and 'this broke the internet' reports that the hysterical masses love so much. One such Youtube video is entitled as just this and I can't remember whether it was the Gerald thing or the S9, but apparently it has broken the internet. Not mine, - I'm managing to type this, read other posts and browse as normal. Maybe another post somewhere 'fixed the internet'...
  22. Well I'll know by around the end of July because with my workload, travel and production time etc, that's going to be about the soonest I'll find out how successful or not this project is. I am hoping the 6k 30p will be 'enough' and if so, will ditch my 2x stills cameras and 3x lenses in favour of another Lumix plus an appropriate lens. I'll still shoot stills, but limit that to; details, landscapes/architecture and family groups, none of which I currently shoot with video other than some drone stuff. If it's 'borderline' and 'needs' 8k, then I think I'll need to get hold of an XH2 and give that a whirl. If that in turn is not going to work, then I will most like trade my 2x stills + 1 lens for a single stills camera because I feel I have one too many cameras to juggle right now as in I can manage 4, but 3 would be my preferred max. And I can't see less than 3 because for ceremonies, I like to shoot 2x static angles and roam with my third video unit plus shoot stills. As I said above, limited info out there, no handbook and a lot of hands on trial & error required because it's more than about just on paper specs and opinions, but getting your hands dirty. Without cocking up a job you are being paid to do.
  23. Here's one from last week's concert. Shot with BMMCC and the Sigma 18-35; not my lens of choice but it's the one I bring when I don't know what I'll be getting into, and I'd never been to this venue before. It was basically a house concert, but amplified and with some stage lighting on the floor; there was a bit of feedback in the sound system that I tried to notch out with EQ in post and succeeded in attenuating most but not all of the ringing. Some handheld b-roll at the beginning.
  24. My specialty. Apologies to those who hate topic drift. I missed it completely, but it sounds like something I'd like a lot! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll probably start it today. That makes total sense. It's a super easy camera to use and the majority the ergonomics are really well thought-out. It just kind of gets the job done without any fuss and gives you a really nice image. About the only things I'd change would be to add an EVF and some built-in wireless image transmission. Oh, and if I'm wishing out loud, make it 4.6k to allow some reframing in post with no quality loss when delivering 4k. Along the same lines as the above, I'm shooting a 48 hour film thing here in late June and the producer got me a first AC. Since I have no use for an actual AC, I'll just be promoting them to second shooter and handing them the C70. I just need to make sure it's straightforward to match it to the K-X which I'll be using (should be, the sensors are really similar sizes and Canon and Red both skew a bit magenta).
  25. Please let us know how it goes for you!
  26. Sure, but I don't see this done on YT basically at all. Everyone chasing high-end images, and no-one willing to learn the basics.
  27. https://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/panasonic-has-used-stock-photos-shot-on-other-cameras-canon-and-nikon-to-promote-the-new-lumix-s9/ 😂 this is absolute garbage if true
