Canon mirrorless next year / GH2 hack within 1 week

    Andrew Reid (EOSHD)By Andrew Reid (EOSHD)July 5, 2011 News 2 Mins Read

Finally some good news. With today’s leak of new Panasonic GH2 firmware, Vitaliy Kiselev says here that the hack is now due ‘in under a week’. The hack will use the leaked V1.0E firmware as revealed on EOSHD earlier today as its basis. Make sure you download the firmware from the links here before they are taken down. Whilst there is no need to install the new firmware yet do consider getting ready to experiment with PTools. Those with Macs can do so in a virtual environment – I recommend VMWare and an ISO image of Windows XP SP3.

Now some very rare news from Canon…

At last plans for their mirrorless camera are moving forwards. Reuters again has the scoop, with an interview with Canon’s head of camera division Masaya Maeda.

Reuters: Rivals including Sony Corp offer mirrorless models, enabling them to market lucrative accessories such as lenses to consumers seeking to move upmarket from compact cameras, and speculation has simmered that Canon and Nikon, who dominate the high-end camera market, may follow suit.

Some analysts have warned that entering the emerging segment could expose Canon to more price competition. Maeda said he did not expect such a move would push down unit prices.

“We are considering the technical aspects [of mirrorless]” Maeda said, when asked about the mirrorless segment.

“We will launch an interesting product next year,” he said, adding that it would be small, but not specifying whether it would be a mirrorless model.

Also Canon have ‘restored production levels’ to pre-Earthquake numbers in Japan. Maeda also plans to increase production from 7 million DSLRs a year to 10 million, via a production hike at brand new factories in Taiwan.
