  1. you should probably get in touch with the police about your concerns. I'm sure they are competent enough to get it sorted. I have no idea where that building is, but if i had of walked past it, i would have taken exactly the same photo because of the symmetry. I'd guess its close to where he works or on the way home perhaps. Heck i have even been known to drive a couple hours to photograph wheat silo's on sunset. We know diddly squat about its past, who owns it now or before and you want to break out the pitchfork and torches. my front door so you don't add me to the conspiracy list.
  2. Took the gimbal and e-m1 to a local lookout today. didn't get to the lookout part, as there's some huge rocks and a cave atmosphere thing happening at the base. The camera gimbal combination gets heavy pretty quick. Not surprising considering my fitness level. I have grabbed some stills from todays foray Its a couple hours later now and my shoulders feel like falling off. I may have to start doing bicep curls with gimbal and camera. I had the 17mm takumar fish eye on the e-m1. Also set it f8 out in the sun and set the focus to 4m or so in front of me. Bit annoying there are no filter threads, as i would have put a vari nd on it however back then it would have been a fish eye on full frame and its understandable that filter threads probably weren't considered, although with the m43 crop, the look is not nearly so wide however. Its quite narrow in places not much wider than shoulder width but opens up about 15 meters in. Its also a trip hazard trying to go though with a gimbal in hand. Rocks and tree roots all over the place. I did do a vortex shot looking upward. Actually i tried a few things, learnt a few things. I will go back with the 24mm sirui to see what sort of difference it makes and i'm kinda looking forward to seeing the comparison. I do notice a bit of side to side movement when walking but it doesn't bother me overly much as i figure some movement is natural when walking along a trail. Sure pans and tilts should be smooth however i am curious as to other peoples expectations are? I also think i need to change the motor speeds as it pans and tilts much quicker than i would like
  3. i make a bold prophecy, that the bodycount will go up by one in your house, should you mention aloud about trading her in. btw when you decide to broach this subject with your wife, can i bring my e-m1 along for posterity ?
  4. you should definitely get the sub editors job Emanuel.. i mentioned earlier energy drinks briefly in a round about way, couldn't believe my eyes today when i spied this today. I have never been a fan of energy drinks, now i know why.
  5. I have read somewhere there's a new gopro coming out around september ? I also watched about two minutes of some kind of spam youtube video about the next gopro but it contained nothing new. So i doubt i'll actually watch anything more till they actually bring something out. Not that i intend to buy, more curious than anything. In some ways the gopro ship has sailed for me. I like a wide shot but not interested in a super wide look. I tend to shoot in linear mode to make things look a bit more normal. I'm also not a fan of a new model every year, until i manage to break it i wont need another gopro / action camera. I only get two pockets on a shirt, one has a phone it it and the other reading glasses. the phone is heavy enough as it is. I could conceivably get an osmo in the pocket with the reading glasses. However i dont want to buy one to find out it doesn't fit. I also wonder how robust the osmo is, it looks kinda frail to me. I would be very agitated if putting a seat belt on breaks the bloody thing. I did see on the news last night a volcano eruption in Italy i think ? a bunch of tourists running for their lives with a cloud of ash spewing out behind them. What i thought ironic was all the selfie sticks pointing backwards towards the volcano capturing themselves running away, bit like lemmings..
  6. Red bull might have something to say about that, It would seem to me that they have made a truckload of money off the back of extreme sports shooting as well as selling a few more cold drinks in the process. I suspect its also kept a few camera men / editors in a job as well. It may not be your "thing" and definitely its a niche area but it still videography and worthy of a thread i think. Like eatstoomuchjam and Emanuel have said, your house your rules and we appreciate that you opening up this thread. No idea where the next david lynch or Spielberg is coming from but there's a good chance one of his / her cameras will be an action camera of some type to cut their teeth on. I was blown away by Chris Benchetler' chasing el nino series from like ten years ago. amazing scenes of winter wonderlands, great skiing and huge jumps with alot of gopro footage. Inspired enough to buy a gopro anyway lol. In hindsight i suspect there was probably a film crew with your typical camera gear doing all the normal stuff with a few skiers wearing gopros. If i was more cynical i'd say very clever marketing by red bull and gopro, however still very impressive visually. I dropped and cracked a two day old iphone 13 pro max while documenting the local roads after the last big storm / flash floods we had. Really wish i'd gone out that day with the gopro... Hats off to anyone who gets out there and does stuff. Be it a wedding, forest trail or car show and I'm brand agnostic, so use what you got.
  7. they say a picture is worth a thousand words...
  8. Quick phone the police, Ai has stolen nona's broomstick !!
  9. I ended up redoing the balance on the crane today. I was trying to do a vortex shot or 360 spin. However the gimbal wouldn't do it, really struggled once the camera was almost vertical. I did try increasing the motor strength and all that did was give it a bad case of the shakes. So i had to watch some vids concerning vortex mode. Seems like i had the camera too low in / on the mount. It seemed to work fine in pf and L mode Once it got close to vertical it was struggling. Once i rebalanced the gimbal and moved the camera lens up and inline with the roll axis or that's where it ended up after rebalancing, It seems much improved and would perform a vortex spin. The lens is actually a little above the back axis however it seems to work ok. I can get to pretty much all the modes on the gimbal except vortex mode, the easiest way for me so far is to access vortex mode is from the zhiyun app on the phone, If i have managed to do it from the gimbal its been more good luck than good management, i'm sure i'll figure it out eventually... Once i get a bit more comfortable with this mode i'll try underslung or upside down and play with that for a bit. I have developed a tendency to work on one thing at a time otherwise it all goes pear shaped pretty quickly. I have noticed that the e-m1 breaks long shoots up into segments, roughly 3 gig sized files. I had heart palpitations when i noticed that although in resolve it seems to play fine. So no need for a defibrillator just yet.
  10. pardon my ignorance, is it still a locked down shot if you pan or tilt while on a tripod or is it called a different type of shot ?
  11. presumably @Andrew Reid will jump all over it, if it takes you off site.
  12. If you hover over the link it shows up as two colours. the front part looks legit, the middle will probably take you off site if you click on it, the end appear legit. It does look a bit sus from what little i know of such things.
  13. Well its taken about 8 hours to charge one set of batteries. I took the opportunity to learn a bit more. The things i thought would be an issue weren't an issue and visa versa... after watching the zhiyun factory vids, i learned i downloaded the wrong app and then jumping through hoops to get the gimbal authorized was annoying as well. I did learn that putting the supplied riser plate between the camera and quick release plate somehow helps with balancing / jitters i then balanced it by eye, giving it small bumps helps to make sure everything returns to where you think it should be. Those locking axis switches are a great idea, can do one axis at a time and move on. If anyone buys one of these make sure you put the batteries in the right way as if you get it wrong, kiss your circuit board goodbye, seen that in one youtube, so i double checked that. I have it balanced with the lcd open, i may change the axis bracket to shorter style later, however for now i'll leave it as is. I started it up and no issues played with the pan and tilt. More tests tomorrow, late tomorrow maybe, as i'm a chauffer tomorrow, taking a mate to the airport. I also have the camera offset just enough that i can open the card door slot without moving the camera, although it is easier if i switch off the gimbal and lock the axis. One slightly annoying issue is when the e-m1 is on the gimbal once the eye cup is level with roll axis the lcd drops out that took 15 minutes to work out how to turn off the eye detect, now it works as expected. Seems like the motors are strong enough, i can press most buttons and change focus or aperture with out upsetting it.
  14. Er... i'm going to mess around and do some kind of rough as, unboxing video. It is undoubtably 4 years too late, but you have to start somewhere i guess.
  15. Its arrived. Three days for delivery, That has to be some kind of record. Im excited... Although i have a couple of things to do before it gets dark, so i'll free it from its bland carboard boxing a little latter. Fair size box, hopefully it comes out a little lighter, after i get it out of the box.
  16. I found time to go for a walk down along the river today, here's a few images from the m1 iii and the takumar smc 17mm fisheye. I did notice some interesting flares, so next time i hope to have the gimbal and do some simple moves with it. Pretty happy with the character of the 17mm fisheye, i figure with the crop from mft its toned down alot but i am liking it. Its autumn over here so there's abit of a red theme happening. I did massage the reds, the saturation and contrast very gently in post. I also experimented with a sharpening technique i saw in a simon booth youtube which appealed to me, its not a one click process however it can all be done in 5 minutes which is fine by me, however if your getting paid by the hour it might be a different story. I read the comments on the anamorphic letterboxing and it makes sense, no idea why my brain wasn't connecting the dots earlier, but thanks for the help.
  17. I pulled the pin on a Zhiyun-Tech Crane 2S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabiliser - COMBO. its an older model by now and there is two newer models i think. The e-m1 iii comes in at 580 gr without lens. The sirui anamorphic is listed a 1 kilogram, both together, should be well within weight considerations. The sirui would probably be the heaviest lens i have. Even with an ef to mft adapter and vintage lenses, i think i'm fairly safe. I got the combo deal as i hope the added arm and rest makes a difference and it was only a $100 dearer although some stores it was $150-200 dearer. I have watched a lot of youtube reviews in an attempt to make an informed decision. I will say, i take a grain of salt with whatever is said on youtube. i'm cynical enough to think there is some bias towards the selling side of things especially with any youtube that has affiliate links involved. I have also noticed when ever a reviewer has two gimbals on display they seem to place them on the dodgiest of tables, as soon as the table is touched or a gimbal moved the whole tables moves. Not exactly confidence inspiring from a visual standpoint. I'm a bit surprised more hasn't been said in this forum about the various gimbals. Maybe that in itself could be taken as a sign... Anyway moving right along... I liked the fact the crane 2s takes the 18650 batteries. I'm not a fan of proprietary battery packs, they tend to cost you more, like anything that's "special". The later crane models seemed to have gone to battery packs and dji and the ronins are the same from what i have seen. The crane 2 motors seem quite large, nearly the same size or slightly smaller as the later crane models and some reviewers have made that comparison as well. Which i tend to think, bodes well for the crane 2s. Also the later crane models are heavier as well and while they will carry heavier loads, i'm not that interested in lugging a heavier load at this time. Some youtubers notice micro jitters with the crane, not all the time, just at some angles, not sure if thats an ongoing problem with balancing or the motors set to the wrong strength or hardware update perhaps, most ppl seem to get it sorted or they don't make too much of an issue about it during the video. i have watched enough vids that i think i'm happy enough with the output i'm likely to get and I'm kinda hoping that most of these reviews are 4 years old and the issues have been sorted. Which also means we about due a new range of gimbals... Probably. There does seem to be a lack of long term reviews and if you can find an answered question about what they still use, most of the time its they have moved on to something different. Actually i'm finding the whole youtube review thing a bit shallow, if i'm honest. You get 10 minutes of some guy yapping on, in front of a camera with basically a bunch of different pan and tilt product shots and maybe 90 seconds of actual gimbal footage. Some youtubes have a better balance. Well see what happens after it turns up.
  18. I'm all for smarter addons like magic mask or smarter tools, but if it starts telling me how to make something better, no thanks. Not sure you'll see much discussion on it. I'm guessing it will decided for our own good what we are allowed do with it. Its in its infancy at the moment, give it some time. From a male third person perspective, not literally i assure you.. i'd expect there to be lots of her husband in her. I presume if english isnt your primary language then chagpt could be beneficial. However is it you ? is it authentic ?
  19. Another question for those who know more than me.. If i make an anamorphic video, is there a way to add text to the black portions at the top or bottom of an anamorphic video when creating a video. It seems to me thats a bit of wasted space and I'm interested in doing something creative within that space. I can reimport the video quite easily and add the text. However i wonder about the quality drop when re rendering. From what i understand i don't think it can be done when the video is created. There's a chance i'm wrong however so i thought i'd ask the question.
  20. back-bones system. I looked at them too but for the price and the fact that you go from super wide to telephoto. From what i could find there didn't seem to be much in the middle. There's a good chance my understanding could be wrong seeing as the gopro was a first for me at the time. Which put me off, and you had to send a camera in or buy one.
  21. kind of the opposite here. People are happy enough to wave a phone camera around. I'm more likely to see a camera on a public holiday or long weekend. Last easter i saw one of those harness rigs with a camera hanging of the front of it at local drag strip. The most action we see is the various car club and bike clubs coming out for the weekend. That's when your more likely to see cameras, when the tourists are in town. No idea where that poll i started went too, maybe the eithernet🙄 On the e-m1 front, i'm messing around with a painters pole as a substitute monopod at the moment. As i move away from from hand held, i figure the painters pole will at least stop the up / down side of things. Considering adding a strap to limit forward / side to side movement but i'll see how it goes first. Being a painters pole it extends to 8 feet or so and doesn't seem to have much flex in it. This thing is pretty rigid. There's a couple of camera "tube" claps at the top. The bolts look offset and they are, By a stroke of good luck the plate center ends up being center of the pole which should help with the balance. There's a simple L shaped cheese plate at the top. I can get the e-m1 rigged up to it however i doubt it will the the same mount thats on the tripod. I can look into making them the same, after i play with it for a bit. I also bought a prop, I have a couple of ideas to try. Its been pretty light on fuel ... the cap was on so tight and the pair of pliers i have were to small to fit around the cap. I had to buy a pair of multigrips to loosen it. I have some more thoughts on the em-1 in the "studio" as i have spent more time with it, however i need to go pump water for the garden and the chooks before it gets dark. Otherwise have a good weekend.
  22. Might be a bit embarrassing if everybody starts running amok with action camera footage... Lots of youtubes out there done with action cameras. Still i think that there are many possibilities that can lead to making more informed content available and should they outgrow it, their already at the right place to ask questions.
  23. Sounds fair. Lot of peoples first forays into video begin with an action camera of some kind.
  24. I love a good Jason bourne movie, however for my own personal use i prefer the footage be "smoother" less jarring. My fitness level sucks, if i have to run and gun i'm likely to have a heart attack. lol Never thought about a shoulder rig, for me i thought, tripod, gimbal, handheld. Personally i'm moving away from handheld. I have occasionally seen shoulder rigs at car shows or large special events. Last easter i saw one of those harness systems with the camera hanging of the front of it at a local weekend race day. Which was kinda interesting, like hey thats something you don't see everyday interesting. Otherwise shoulder rigs scream TV to me. But if it works for you that's great. On the lens side of perfection, i have a collection of vintage lenses that give me all the desirable imperfections i can want. The thing is, since i'm on mft i think i kinda lose half of that character with the crop factor anyway.
