    Panasonic GH6

Perhaps with the delay of the Summer Olympics to July 2021 gave some breathing room for Panasonic to re-evaluate the capabilities. When they launched the S camera’s the official company line was “Panasonic is on track for 8K by 2020”. I assumed we would have seen it in a FF S series camera, but with the release of the S5 and the past 24MP S1H release it hasn’t come to pass. The spirit of the GH MFT cameras has always been “the first with 4K...the first with 4K 60p...”. Or in more broad terms to push the limits. However, we have see a gigantic leap in FF technology. We have 8K, we have 4K120p, all offered in 10-bit 420 or better, with excellent rolling shutter performance. At this point I would rather see the first internal ND solution in a mirrorless camera than 8K from a MFT sensor. I would rather see a very solid 6K60p and 4K120p. I would rather have internal RAW or ProRes HQ straight from the camera. Give us dual gain ISO from GH5S with IBIS. Give us some more absolutely unique 1.7 prime zooms like the 10-25 f/1.7 A 25-50 f/1.7 would pair nicely indeed and give us a native mount lens with AF that would compete with the classic speedbooster Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 f/1.8 setups. Besides, we have all the other focal lengths and aperture combinations already covered in the extensive MFT lens ecosystem. People that complain about these big and heavy MFT lenses don’t need yet another 12-35 f2.8 standard zoom! All of those features above actually improve the shooting experience with the camera. 6K is a nice middle ground, offering excellent 4K delivery and makes a “8K” anamorphic headline grabber still possible, while also offering a high resolution HFR not seen in any other mirrorless camera. Besides, I could shoot 6K60p and use a superscaler from BM Resolve or Topaz and essential get a 8K60p video and very few people would be the wiser. All the new “hybrid” cameras aren’t really hybrids at all. The R5/R6 are photo first cameras. They shit the bed for video. The Sony A7SIII is an excellent video mirrorless camera but its 12MP sensor hampers it for mixed photo work. Besides, I think Blackmagic is more of a threat they now have a S35 12K sensor shooting at 60p! Imagine something similar in a new pocket 6K camera with modular mount...ouch! The A7IV will be a true hybrid but will probably max out at 4K60p video and still have a 24MP sensor, which is well within the competing range for 20MP+ MFT sensors for photo work. And they don’t even have to use a 4:3 sensor if that don’t want to. JVC has proved that (although for photo I really like the 4:3 aspect ratio vs 3:2 a lot)! Anyway, long rambling post.
  2. My bad, I got you mixed up with that other dude named BTN_Plx.
  3. He even takes BTM_PIX idea to install a dummy battery with a external toggle. Lol I wonder where he got that idea.
  4. Absolutely hilarious. Giving weasels a bad name. I know you don’t want to do the whole YouTube thing Andrew, but this is why. Toneh just rips others peoples hard work and words and records his video and collectes ad revenue and plugs his books.

It’s very possible. However there has been very subtle hints dropped here and there on LUMIX live broadcasts with Matt and Sean and perhaps a very subtle one by Phillip Bloom in one of his live shows (he wouldn’t even say the name GH6 I regards to a question).
  6. His point is moot anyway because the 65C temps return to normal in 2-3 minutes and not hours like the cripple timer would lead you to believe. If it was 8K recording for 20 mins and then a 5 min cool down before another round of 8K then that’s fine. If the cool down timer actual was based off internal temperature that would be fine. It’s not. It seems completely artificial and arguably an excessive cripple.

    1860 vs 2200 or a 15% increase.
  8. At least you don’t have to explain to your wife that you are about to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on audio equipment in this current economic environment. Its good but not great. It tends to be slightly off, much better when you use the zoom function and peaking enabled but we can’t do that when live recording ;-(

It’s rare to see the same batteries being used among one brand across different format cameras. I think its a wise move.
  10. Yes, and the afterwards make sure to immediately inject bleach in your body,

This is very intriguing. From a business standpoint wouldn’t they want you to have to buy different batteries for the cameras? More money in their pocket and larger total product margins. I’m going to double down on my theory that the GH6 will share the S5 body. Leaked price is at $1,999.
  12. Pants down and knickers shit. Maybe the few that got a non-recalled R5 are the lucky ones now. There will no doubt be mods to enable 8K in 20 minute recording chunks with a 2 minute cool down now that we know the true internal temps.
  13. S5 basically a full frame GH5 with 10-bit 420 across the board with a new battery that can be used in the GH5/GH5S/G9. If the price is right this camera will be positioned very well. If it has new AF system it will be a very, very solid release indeed. Woah, exiting!
  14. I could seem them releasing a firmware update for the S1 and S1H to readjust the product segments. Otherwise this S5 is stepping on the S1’s toes so to speak. If they adjust the S1 up in features then the S1H would need a price drop or a firmware.
  15. I believe Matt from Panasonic said the L 24-105 is varifocal (adjusts the focus as you zoom) to achieve parfocal abilities in operation but not in optical construction as say the fujinon mK cinema lenses.
  16. I haven’t seen anything about him using the 1D3 either, but then again I’ve only occasionally watch his videos anymore. I really do think the R5 is a huge embarrassment and as time has gone on the hype has worn off and people are starting to vocalize their displeasure with the R5. But I think Canon is going to just ignore it and push out more RF products and pivot by saying the R5 and R6 were photography only cameras (please forget about the all the video spec hype we did). And then the resale value of the R5 will tank because there will be so many on the second hand market. But Canon can pretty much do anything because there are sooo many Canon users and fanboys (yes there is a difference) that will give Canon a pass.
  17. The G9 does well too (better than GH5 and GH5S) when you use a picture profile other than vlogl. I’m not sure if they has to do with more contrast in the image or what. I’m not actually sure where in the pipeline the contrast and DfD optimizations are happening. But like others have said, with the G9 at least, it performs surprising well. Definitely by far the best contrast only implementation. I really think they need to overhaul it and give it a new name. Depth from Defocus doesn’t instill much confidence. I also think improving the tracking, eye, face, and object improves the performance a lot too as the algorithm can work on a smaller area when determining focus. The sample rate (FPS) helps a lot too. The performance between 24p and 60p is very noticeable. If you take the direction they have been going with DfD it has been a combination of improving the algorithm and inventing extremely responsive AF motors that can do the “contrast hunt” faster and faster and thus less and less perceived.

This is how it is with some sensors made for industrial applications and then tweaked by a camera manufacture (or sony themselves) for camera use. I think the differences in DR are all on the processing side and perhaps how each camera can keep the sensor cool or at least in optimum performance range. The S1H is a good example. They do heavy noise reduction and perhaps the cooling helps keep the sensor DR performance near what they would measure in the lab, ie perfect conditions.
  19. The final nail in the coffin will be the liquid nitrogen 1 min dip test. Make it so! Or construct one of those old school SLR dry ice Astro cooling boxes and repeat this same test. I bet the result will be the same.
  20. Well Andrews findings are going mainstream now so Canon is going to have to address it soon and explain what is going on bug or malfunction or otherwise. Whats nice is any concerned R5 owner can repeat this test and see for themselves and make their own conclusion. Personally, after doing this test and watching that message “overheating! Shutting down” appear on screen while my camera is in a 4C fridge with reported temperatures well below starting temperatures in a 24C room I would be pissed. Especially when you go to get your camera and its cold to the touch.
  21. Well, let’s wait and see but yes its disappointing. I can’t see them having the S5 with the the same specs basically as the S1. Rumored announcements coming in September.
  22. Mr. Brynn North dropping another beautiful montage. GH5, Speedbooster, Canon 7-200 f4, Sigma 18-35 f1.8, and Sigma 50-100 f1.8. All manual focus. All very well done. Would love to see longer docu-style pieces from him. All his travels films he does for himself have a more serious, respectful tone to them.
