  1. Looks great. Thanks for posting the video. Personally, I can live with what little noise there is if it lets me get another stop of DR by not having to overexpose by a stop. Thanks for the confirmation. Yeah, the people at Cienma5d really LIKE the noise on the VLOG. They said the noise in VLOG made it look "more organic" than using HLG.
  2. Another Question: Does VLOG on the S1 need to be overexposed the way that SLOG does?
  3. Thanks. Now I have to figure out how to set up an alert.
  4. Where did you see them that low??? If so, I am on it. Do I need a lens??? I can't afford any L Mount glass. Can I DIY a lens? Help!!! ☹️ My concern is that N-LOG doesn't really have that much dynamic range, at least when tested by maartech on youtube. I even asked him if he was sure the DR was so low, and I think he got kind of offended I doubted his testing. I haven't seen too many head-to-head dynamic range comparisons of the Z6 to other cameras.
  5. I feel your pain, brother. I can live with spending a lot of money on a camera and lenses for a great image; I just want to make sure it is in focus. Everything seems All Quite on the Sony Front right about now too. The only rumors there have been lately (and there haven't been many rumors lately) is that Sony WON'T be putting 10-bit / a better codec into the alpha series cameras any time soon.
  6. Thanks for that. I will try to look up some videos on the latest firmware updates. Thanks for the confirmation and for the link. Ha Ha, still using a GTX 960... with only 2GB of VRAM as well My CUDA performance is so low, people using MacBooks make fun of me. Needless to say, my editing sessions usually involve a lot of cussing and drinking.
  7. Thanks. Do we know which firmware that was cleared up in? I hadn't heard about blue light clipping being fixed. Will do, thanks for making it available. Just to be clear, this is based on your own findings? And rest assured I avoid using premiere all the time Hopefully there are no issues with using S1 VLOG in Resolve.
  8. Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I have watched that video a couple of times. It seems that aside from the banding in the 8-bit SLOG 2 from Sony, it actually BEATS the VLOG, at least according to his tests. (By beat I mean better highlight retention and no color shift in shadows, which his tests said the S1 has.) There's another test by vistek where he did a quick and dirty test between the two cameras (S1 and a7 III) and the S1 was significantly better: The tests start around the 9:17 mark of this video: Now neither of these tests seem scientific but they both seems somewhat "real world." And they seem to contradict one another to a certain extent. Gerald Undone's test said better highlights but banding in the a7 III, with color shift in the shadows on the S1, while Vistek's show better highlights in the S1 and no banding, but plenty of magenta skin tones (the magenta skin tones may have more to do with the VLOG to 709 LUT they used though.)
  9. Hi everyone: Anyone have extensive experience shooting in VLOG on the S1 (not the S1 H)??? In particular, how much of a real world dynamic range advantage does it have over Sony's 8-bit SLOG? (Or the VLOG found in the GH5 or GH5S, or FLOG in the X-T3). There don't seem to be too many examples of it posted online, and the few comparisons I've seen between VLOG on the S1 and SLOG2 on the Sony a7 III seem to contradict one another. Also, does it need to be overexposed to avoid excessive noise/ color shifts in the shadows? If so, how many stops are optimum? The fact that it uses an h.264 codec at 150Mbs has me concerned. (Am I misunderstanding??? Does it have a higher bitrate when shooting VLOG???) Thanks in advance. Don't understand what is taking so long for Sony to get 10-bit with a better codec in to a camera. P.S. As video is still just about 15% of my work compared to stills photography being 85% of my work, I probably won't buy an S1H.
  10. I agree!!! Wish Sony had done something - anything - to improve video on their new releases today (a6600 and a6100) but sadly they didn't. Oh well... Maybe lots of people will sell their X-T3s to invest in an S1H and I can get a good deal on a used Fuji???
  11. Good to know. I just can't imagine myself setting manual focus from behind the camera, then going to sit down in front, discovering focus is off, getting back up and adjusting focus, then sitting down and seeing if focus is spot on or not, then repeating until I get the focus right. guess if I were in arm's reach of the lens that would be fine. though. Thanks! Ok, so I am getting the impression this is important for vloggers.
  12. I'm sure the S1H is an awesome camera. But I am not sure how one can say that it doesn't need great autofocus, and then say the fact that the screen flips forward is awesome. Do people use manual focus when the screen is flipped forward?
  13. Hi There, Dan: Are you looking for help with your filming TECHNIQUE? Or are you looking for help in picking topics? If you are looking for help with TECHNIQUE, here is a simple one for sit down interview. But if you are instead looking for suggestions on what topics to cover, that is harder. You said you want to make interviews about activism topics. Why do you want to do that? Do you feel strongly about activism? or do you just want to practice shooting interviews / get paid to make videos and you don't really care about social activism? If you don't know much about activism / human rights then I can make some suggestions by private message to you. I don't want to turn a public thread into a political thread on this forum.
  14. see... Canon is ahead of the game with their 120fps at 720p.
  15. Well... I think it would depend on the lens and the AF system. I am not particularly familiar with Canon bodies and lenses. My understanding is that the 1DX II is one of their top of the line cameras. So that might have something to do with it.
  16. As a sony shooter, I would personally like to thank canon for making such great lenses.
  17. Thanks. I am pretty sure that once I decide to sell all my Sony gear and spend big $$$ going Fuji, then Sony will release an aps-c camera with 10-bit 4:2:2 60fps 4K just to spite me.
  18. Is it the BT.601 tag that is causing the Magenta skies / clouds? Is there a summary of the various workarounds?
  19. SOLVED: I had the Auto Slow Shutter feature turned on for video shooting and it was messing things up.
  20. Just got a new PortKeys 5" monitor for my Sony a6500 and there is CRAZY LAG when I try to shoot video. When I shoot stills, there is no perceptible lag at all. But when I shoot video, it is like the screen update refresh is changes to twice per second. I am sure I have some setting messed up (most likely) but don't know what to look for. Again, in stills it is fine, but once I change it to movie, the lag is HORRIBLE. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
  21. That's one limitation of shooting video: unless it is RAW, it is difficult to correct different color casts. It's even more difficult when in the same scene you pan the camera from one color cast to another. In your editor if you have an orange color cast from tungsten lighting, you can cool the temperature a little bit AND lower the Vibrance down to zero or negative a little bit. Then bring the saturation up a little. And as @androidlad lad suggested above, do a secondary grade to reduce the blue saturation. I don't know what NLE you use. Resolve is pretty good at dealing with various color casts to an extent. But nothing is going to be as good as a RAW photo.
  22. While I agree it was a bit harsh, I found it pretty helpful. Maybe I will wait until a new firmware update... or go for the X-T3. Still can't decide.
  23. I haven't heard of a Tokina 16mm... do you mean the older 17mm f/3.5???
  24. Thanks in advance. Two more questions / requests for you. 1) You mentioned you were pretty happy with the Z6 compared to the a7 III. Can you kind of list the reasons why you like the Z6 better than the a7 III? 2) Do you know of a good manual focus lens around 20mm to adapt to the Z6? Something with minimal distortion preferably? (I know that might be hard to find in a wide angle lens).
