  1. @BTM_Pix Thank you very much for your efforts! Quintessence (as I understand your experience): There is not much difference between the D500 and the X-T2 concerning focusing in very low light on not fast moving subjects. @Django Thank you for sharing your experience concerning the difference between D750 and the X-T2! Yep...Technology moved on during the past years, but there is still a big difference between APS-C and FF in many aspects...shooting moving subjects in poor light conditions is only one aspect of the story.... @j-oc That's why (+ the poor shadow recovery and poor DR) I switched - for stills - to Nikon. The 5D m3 is a great camera (I sold all my Canon cameras - 1D line, 5D x line - except my first Canon camera 400d and the 7D, keeping these because of nostalgy) but for my needs the D750 is much more better (AF constancy, DR, etc.). The 5D m3 had (not only for me) a minimum of double as many misfocused shots as the D750 (not only in low light) when shooting moving subjects on location with high requiremets in detail. Some buddys told me, the 5D m4 would be much more consistant when talking AF and DR, but finally the Canon photo game is over for me.
  2. @j-oc Yeah, the D750 is (in its price range) an exceptional camera for focusing in low light and very low contrast. But in these situations it's hard to get "art stills", because of the dark. Photography is all about light and not darkness...;-) But it's still very useful for some situations to rely on an AF capable to "see in the dark"....The D750 beats (when talking AF in the dark) even the 5D m3. Only the 6D can hold up with it (and only with the center cross)... I like the Fuji too...not from the beginning on because of my false post production (RAW). When using Adobe, it's hard to get the best out of the RAWs. After beginning to use Photo Ninja, things got MUCH better...So now I'm considering to buy one with the additional grip and some lenses. But when holding it in my hands, I didn't have the time to test it in low light... @BTM_Pix It would be a great help....Thank you very much!
  3. @BTM_Pix + @Inazuma + @j-oc Thank you for answering! Now a last question: I use for such extreme low light (and low contrast) scenarios the D750 - it "can see" and focus in the dark (for stills)... Some weeks ago, I had the D500 of a buddy of mine in my hands and was very impressed concerning the focusing ability (exceptional) in the dark (for stills)... So is someone out there who owns the D750/D500 and could say something about a focusing comparison with a X-T2? BTW: The A6500 with a 35mm 1.8 lens fails in many of my tests very often, when comparing to the focusing abilities (in the dark) of the D750/D500. Please consider, we are not talking about IQ or FF vs APS-C, but only about focusing ability in low light/low contrast for moving subjects when taking photos. Thank you!
  4. @jonpais Jon, I know you are shooting with the X-T2. I saw some very good photos and footage out of this camera and hold this camera for some hours in my hands but there was not time enough for all tests I need. I would like to know - if possible - how about the focusing ability (AF) of the X-T2 in low light and low contrast situations? (for shooting photos and video) Thank you!
  5. This will completely change the way journalists, photographers and filmers (from countries affected by ban) will have to pack their bags when travelling to US. It will still work, but concerned people have to plan their journeys differently. I will probably travel this year to Las Vegas (NAB) end of April and I am curious how this will work. Just keeping fingers crossed... BTW: Is there somebody having a link to a list of countries affected? Thank you.
  6. @jcs Full ACK. That's why this kind of "backdoor marketing" is in my eyes much more interesting at this point as the assumptions and postfactic claims done to this point on the GH5. Another very interesting aspect is that this kind of reactions are predictable. The same process (hate from fanboys against criticism and other opinions and points of view) with a Pana camera was a review of Shaun Hurlbut and the GH4. Taking a look at this camera, Hurlbut - as a experienced, successful and well known filmmaker - said (really worth to read, because 3 years later Hurlbut was proven right): ..etc. @andy lee comments on these facts too and advocates the GH4 trying to explain Hurlbut "cinematic look"...:-)) It's interesting how the crowd of pistoleros tries to bash and scream a reputable filmmaker (Shaun) down, because expressing a opinion from professional point of view and not based on unexperienced fantasies of sub 2.000$ mirrorless shooters... Simply try to read some comments and always consider: Who is Hurlbut and who are the self proclaimed GH4 lawyers? Mostly people who never could afford a Cx00 or any other more expensive pro camera in their hands...This posting is a good lession in "credibility" and worthless opinions... I tend to trust a reputable pro filmmaker (Hurlbut) by far more than self proclaimed "experts" -.even if they scream very loud on internet.
  7. @funkyou86 Nice explanation...But facts and knowledge don't count any more. Feeding the naive people's phantasy with claims like "the GH5 is the ARRI for enthusiasts" is much better and you get more likes. Irrational fanboyism seems to be the new religion... The famous German philosopher Hannah Arendt said once: Panas marketing and social media guys did with the GH5 hype an excellent job and acquired hundreds of sales representatives - aka "independent enthusiasts / reviewers" - (mostly) for free. This reminds me of the paid Canon video posting in DPReview some weeks ago, a guy who claimed to sell his RED for a Canon 80D...Of course... :-)))) Conclusion: Feed people's phantasy and they will give you their money and their soul! (+1 for Panas marketing devision - Guys you did an excellent job!)
  8. @Davey Davey, I work intensively with Panas for documentary and interview...I know and tested the Pana focusing system extensively and it is by far the worst when comparing with Sony A6x00, Canon DPAF and Fuji X-T2. Contrast AF + DFD CAN NOT compete with phase detection + contrast detection or DPAF. I worked with several Panas and dived very deep in testing different AF modes, but...It's somehow usable in some scenarios after tweaking, but far away from a reliable method to seriously work with. Very good for wide shots and subjects moving from side to side. BUT a desaster when facing unpredictable back and forth moving of subjects. OK, when stepping aperture down, it could work, but with fast lenses and shallow DOF it's a mess... At the end of the day, this AF flaw will NOT be such important for many shooters used to focus manually, but for ENG style and Run & Gun for one man bands (journalists, etc.) it will be not first choice for moving objects and shallow DOF....Thouigh we should consider, that this camera has enough strengths... ;-) @jonpais My FZ1000 doen't hunt on the background back and forth when using "focus area". So move the focus area on the place you want it to be during self filming (middle. left, right, etc.), increase the size of your green focus square to the maximum possible and half push the focus button. Then start filming... This method works for me and my FZ1000 (eg during interview situations, when I am completely alone and I can not stay behind the camera but have to discuss with my interview partner), even the background should be very contrasty. I use to lighten my subject (even during daylight), so since using this method, I never had any problems with hunting forth and back)....
  9. That's poor...quite miserable in my eyes...just take a look at the background focusing permanently back and forth - unusable with this flaw. It's the "old" Panasonic "pumping issue", sometimes in background, sometimes with the subject in foreground. It works a little bit better when defining a certain focus area and trying to keep the subject within this area, but it's far away from Sony A6x00 AF or Canon DPAF...
  10. @andy lee + @Andrew Reid There are TWO very good possibilities to prevent this kind of spam (depending on spam prevention features of your forum CMS): Use a math application (2+2 = ?) or a Q&A (Question and Answer eg: What's the name of the manufacturer of the 5D m3? ...Canon...) for new registration and/or posting - even modern spam bots CAN NOT resolve Q&A which are regurarly changed). Consider that Captcha solutions are very week nowadays, you can buy automatic Captcha and DeCaptcha resolver/breaker for pennies.... Don't allow the first post of a new user without admin release (after checking first post of a new user, this one can publish without check) At the end of the day, it depends on the technical (spam prevention) skills of your Forum CMS. As said, a Math or Q&A AddOn would be ideal to prevent automatic spam...
  11. Is there a substancial and visible difference between NX1-120fps and NX1-120fps + high bitrate hack ? (I'm asking because personally I prefer to not install "hacks" without substancial proven benefits)
  12. @funkyou86 You don't have to compare the GH5 or other Lumix devices with a 15K camera to talk about color science. You only have to compare the Pannys (NOT camcorder or pro devices) simply with am Nikon D750, which is cheaper than a GH5. No chance for the Panny to reach the pleasant Nikon colors OOC (with correction / grading in post, of course). And don't say, it's in the eyes of beholder...I made some A/B tests with real people (not with woolly-minded gear heads living in a parallel universe) and a vast majority prefer the Nikon color rendition (OOC) over the Panny one. ;-) In my eyes Pana still got better in the last two years in handling color science OOC. Just take a look at some pieces of face studies of @jonpais with his GX85...When comparing it with OOC Pana footage from two years ago, you will realise a substancial difference...

@mercer Thank you! I know about the D750, I own it. I was just curious about the D5500 because I saw it very often as travel / second camera in the hand of photography pros but never saw this little and very capable camera hyped for video shooting. Though, your D5500 footage is very pleasant...Did you correct / graded it much?
  14. @jonpais Yeah...I use Pana cams for two years now and there is a huge progress in color science and specially skin tones. I can see this very clear when comparing the skin tones on my "old" FZ1000 with eg your gx85. Lip color appeared on the FZ1000 (without great tweaking or correction in post) in some lighting situations quite "piggish", nowadays Panny color rendition on a gx85 is much more pleasant OOC...

@mercer Is there a substancial difference in overall video IQ between the D5500 and the D750? I'm just asking because I never hold the D5500 in my hands...
  16. @AKED-M I saw this video too...just wondering about the fact, that the 10bit footage is much more noisier than the 8bit footage...Meanwhile there are many questionnable tests with "unreal" or "too beautiful results to be true" to rely on. The own experience is the most reliable at the end of the day....
  17. @jonpais Fact is, 99% of people NEVER hold the GH5 in their hands. Most AF talk is speculation and assumption. Furthermore there are surely fanatic GH5-fanboys defending the camera, even it was complete crap (for sure it is NOT). And paid "social media marketers", paid to spread / advocate the most positive aspects of this product and fight criticism... On the other side, there are enough Pana-hater, trying to question and miscredit nearly all features of the GH5. Why? No clue...Fanboyism and hate aren't very useful for curious potential buyers, but this "war" does influence their decision for sure...It's all about money and fanatism - and this is quite sad...Take a look at the comments on this video - "The GH5 AF-War": Let's wait until one can regularly buy and properly operate the GH5 and then praise or hate it...It will be more than fair...
  18. @lucabutera and As experienced constructor you probably considered already the following aspects: eg the extensively used Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 weights about 1.500g eg the outstanding Canon EF 300mm F2.8 weights about 2.400g The 300mm prime is - when used with the NX1 in slomo video or 4K - OUITSTANDING...Simply mindblowing... So it would be very nice (if possible) to consider a minimum of 1.500g for a lens like the common 70-200mm to use with your adapter. I hope the electric motor of the 30mm Samsung lens would be powerful enough for this...Thank you again for your work!
  19. @Kisaha As reading out of your postings, you are making a living out of filming Kisaha. So, you want to earn money...Jumping into the "every year a new camera" race doesn't contribute to making profit. The NX1 is a very nice cam with flaws, as other (much more hyped and expensive) cameras too...So you have to ask yourself, if your clients/audience will see a difference between the NX1 and a "NewestHypedCamera". Probably not. Review forums (like DPReview & co.) are a kind of parallel universe, having nothing to do with reality of normal Joes (as audience) or with getting payed jobs. It's a world in which gear guys film some months with camera A, get tired of it, trade it and buy a new WOW-cam. After maximum 5 months they get tired of it, trade it (with loss) and buy another system. Content wise? Mostly ZERO...Only (oftenly) exagerated gear talk, pixel peeping, armchair expertise and so on... I invested 65 Euros some days ago for a survey under 461 Facebook German participants (all relevant age groups, men/women, etc.) on Facebook. You know what? 78 % of them watch video on their smartphones/tablets, another 17 % watch on PC / laptop, only 5 % watch videos on TV. The best one is: from the 17 % watching videos on PC, a vast majority not even has a FullHD resolution... ;-) So the pixel peepers live in a parallel world and dream about the 16K future and numerous Hollywood jobs - they will never get...The reality is max. 1080p. Same for corporate clients... So...Get your money in good promotion for your business and keep on your work with the NX1, if you like it. Stop living in the parallel world of gear heads...You will never get a paid job from gear heads. It's simply losing time, energy and money.
  20. @josdr The technical aspects are completely clear - but don't correspond to the reality in my experience. I shot some weddings as second/third shooter to gain some experience with guys charging 2.500 - 5.000 Euro for a one day wedding photography shot (6-8 hours), including post, all rights, etc. In these cases, the photographers had quite a lot of work in post, trying to deliver their customers the "look & feel" they wished (working on many individual stills separately)...I asked them and I was told they work (in average) 8-15 hours for post... Maybe, but I doubt the lazy ones can make as much money as the diligent ones. The dilligent pros work day and night on customer satisfaction, on their own skills, on getting new ideas, on communicating with their (potential) clients, on making better marketing for themselves, etc....Mostly, it' s quite hard for a photographer/videographer to get rich by simply pushing a button... ;-) Furthermore, I am NOT interested in working with lazy people - simply because there is almost nothing to learn from them. And I am still learning...
  21. @Davey Well said...But that is only half the truth. Ever considered the (numberous) hours to spend in post - with hundreds of RAW photos - when not shooting properly in different lighting and WB scenarios? For 800 BP? No go...
  22. @lucabutera Thank you for the helpful test! We have to consider that AF speed != AF accuracy - so your test is not surprising for me ( I can't check this, because I don't own the 30mm Samsung lens) In video (CAF) it's much more important to lock on accurately and keep focus than fastly lock on and miss focus Thanks again! Additional thought: As I can see, the lighting situation you use could be a little bit challenging for the NX1, as the behaviour and IQ of the NX1 in quite decent light and decent contrast are sometimes a miserable failure. So if you do your test in nearly perfect situations like day light and normal contrast, you could get completely different results for the same test. My experience after about 25.000 still shots with the NX1... In very decent light and contrast, the NX1 misses oftenly focus (and mostly IQ) when fast AF lock on with moving subjects is needed (still photography) - nothing comparable with other APS-C cameras like the D7200 or the D500. This camera's focusing capabilities and IQ are really very dependent of the amount of light it receives and contrasts it's faced with...Much more than any other "quality camera" with APS-C sensor size...
  23. @lucabutera You say: This sounds really exciting...Remarkable capabilities, because there is NOT something comparable on the market. Two questions on this claim: Does this mean, if you touch your NX display for getting focus during video/still shooting (="touch focus" feature of the NX system), even a Samyang lens would be able to auto focus on the point you touched to? Will your adapter have an EF mount to adapt lenses or some other mount? When reading your statement above, I believe (when assuming that the adapter would have all the capabilities you described in this forum) this will be one of the most exciting/revolutionary adapters on the market, tranforming the NX1 in an "universal AF-lens camera". This would be for sure an unique feature from AF point of view... Unfortunately we all have to wait ( as you say, about 2 months) for the completion of the project. I am very curious about AF speed and accuracy of your EF-2-NX-AF-adapter, when used with different EF lenses...Keep on your good work and innovative spirit...(But try to not react that irritated, when people ask different questions or reveal their thoughts...They want simply to evaluate and discuss as many aspects as possible...)
  24. @lucabutera As I understand, the AF skills of your adapter base on the AF skills of the native 30mm F2 Samsung lens + communication unit between EF lens and adapter. One question (because I don't own or have tested yet this 30mm lens): As we all know the NX system has best AF with the two S-lenses. I can confirm this, because eg the standard kit lens (18-55mm OIS) doesn't deliver such good AF as the S 16-50 F2.0-2.8. So what about AF speed and accuracy of the 30mm F2.0 lens? How do you plan adding EF-IS to the adapter? I doubt that a normal Joe could reassemble the original lens without damaging functionality of the adapter/original lens. Therefore one probably needs some skills in optoelectronics ("electronic fingers") though...Or did I misunderstood something?
