dxotic reacted to BTM_Pix in My New Pocket4K Android App
Pleased to announce that my Pocket4K app for Android is now complete and is with beta testers so barring any calamties will be available from the Play store on the 21st of December.

Here is a screen shot with a quick run through of the features from top to bottom :

Across the top we have the controls for Aperture, ISO and shutter angle.
Next up we have the colour temperature and tint controls, the preset white balance selectors, the Auto White Balance button and, of course, the Record button.
Beneath that we have the 8 snapshot memories which you can use to store and instantly recall 8 different custom settings of ISO, Aperture, Shutter Angle and White Balance. To store the preset you long press on the memory slot that you want to use and to recall it just short press. Haptic feedback is given to indicate that the preset has been written and the currently loaded preset is denoted in orange (M1 in the shot above). Presets are stored in non volatile memory so are always available in any session.
Next is the focus controller, which is operated using the slider and/or the fine tune buttons. A long press of the button moves instantly to closest focus and infinity respectively. The AF button in ths row activates the single shot auto focus.
To accompany the focus controls, you then have 6 memory slots (A to F) to store focus points and you can switch instantly between them by simply pressing the required one. In addition, next to these are the controls for A-B-A focus transition and the speed control. Again, all focus points are stored in non volatile memory for use in any session.
Finally we have the controls for applicable MFT power zoom lenses with the same interface as the focus controls (including long press for instant minimum/maximum zoom) and 4 non volatile memory positions for later recall.
There is another function that it can do that I'll let you know about closer to release date and I will put up a little demo video of it in action late next week.

    Emotive Color Version 3
    Core LogC Details
    - Rewrote engine to work at 65x65x65, main files are now at eight times resolution (supporting files processed at that resolution)
    - Fine tuned multi-pass/smoothing technique, to achieve absolute smoothness of final files
    - Introduced Averaging (averaging two separate measurements/conversions of a light source)
    - Corrected LogC rolloff artifact introduced with Verde
    - Corrected far magenta-red artifact
    Emotive Color Component Details
    - Remade EC component to incorporate new Arri primaries  that were quietly revised this summer for Alexa LF release
(much deeper, more accurate red placement in relation to blue/green, and subtle hue shifts throughout)
    - Incorporated 'Sat Lock-Out", like hue lock out, that is fully accurate to saturation distribution between relative hues of Arri RGB primaries
(corrects excessive saturation of orange/yellow/green in highlights, and under-saturation of blue in shadows)
    - Significantly refined saturation model
    - Unified EC for both WBs (taking a que from Arri's single R709) [Tungsten has significantly more contrast, higher ideal exposure]
    - Smoother rolloff placement in EC component
    - Replaced Pop with Linear (no highlight shoulder, better alternative to Arri R709)

    - Remade all PREs with latest process (at 65, provided at 33) - much more accurate and smooth
    - Entirely new PDF (and supplemental waveforms)
    - Added Daylight Skintone SBS
    - Updated 'Always Already' with V3 (Download 'Original File' - *Avoid watching in Firefox)

@kye That'll certainly do it; swap the VLog to LogC transform for GHa LogC in Mirekti's case. Big HLG to VLog update incoming.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I'm deep in technical at the moment. I can be reached directly via email
Noise amplification and artifacts are completely absent with the conversion (others feel free to chime in); the next update will hit the theoretical max for smoothness, for which I am very excited
No S yet, I'm still completely occupied with updating the 5; in any case if I get to it, you will get it
All-I is on the level with ProRes, if you'd like to record internally
As of this moment, VLog is preferable to C-D & HLG, because of the directness of the conversion (the fidelity/smoothness is simply better). That gap is about to close considerably
For normal speed, you can overexpose, no need for more than a stop (avoid skintone around/above 65). Avoid underexposure* Of late, because of the nature of grading tools and complexity of hue lock outs, which I will cover in the next Pdf, I think it is best practice to try to expose for your preferred final image using the .vlt in the viewfinder (for reference performance, especially for PPro users).
For 120, *definitely overexpose - just avoid placing anything important deep in the rolloff. Monitoring Luts are for VLog only
Thanks man. The two biggest compliments I've received were from Amira shooters. Andrew Wilding said he preferred EC 'Soft' to the Amira itself, which made my day*
Here is a still using Verde and something more recent:

    Hi Sage,
Will you be offering the GH5s conversion as a free update? I have the GH5 but may sell it to get the GH5s as it would suit my needs more. But I want to get into shooting something as it looks great and also test it out.
Will the color coded engine be an app that you input the Kelvin into to get the lut?
    Sounds intriguing!
  8. Thanks
dxotic reacted to Sage in GH5 to Alexa Conversion
    Sure,
The format that the Arri Alexa actually shoots to is LogC. The LogC conversion conforms VLog to the exact output of the Arri (when the footage is WBed correctly under a supported light source)
From there, the LogC data format needs to be conformed to the display to allow the correct handling of RGB. The standard approach for Rec709 is to apply the Arri R709 Lut to the footage (which has the correct RGB primaries). Other Luts and workflows intended for LogC may also be used following the LogC conversion (the Alexa is often well supported by 3rd parties).
My experience has been that Arri's default 709 color space is a very uninspiring starting point for me. The underlying color science is great, but the luma and saturation placement is just not very cinematic.
Enter Main/Soft; these include the LogC conversion, combined with a luma and saturation placement that I much prefer (and conforms to the 'Sicario luma ceiling'). They include the Arri R709 primaries for correct RGB on a Rec709 display. The base look is informed by film (celluloid) luma and saturation. I may release this as a separate component for Arri users eventually (the 'Emotive Color' component)
The following is from an Alexa Mini (Master Prime 35mm):

dxotic reacted to Sage in GH5 to Alexa Conversion
With the Olpf settings, the texture rivals the Alexa (and this smoother style is a key quality of the 5D3 ML)
Of course, I would love to support the 5D3 eventually (they are rented out near me)
*On the identical note, that is that the P4K and GH5 both converted to LogC will be identical (assuming same settings and lens)
Oh yea - extreme red saturation is now correct with Verde (there was an artifact out there before)

Its really simple; first thing of note, its standard cinema luma placement for nighttime interiors with diffuse facial lighting -
Take a look at where the faces place, and the black level is set in these:

(its actually a bit brighter than I wanted, for the context of this white page)

    Pt. 2
Here are the steps. Desaturate is actually at 23 on the far shot (context change)
(Note: the Hue Passthrough is just an empty node, and the Layer Mixer is set to a Composite Mode of 'Hue' - right click on it. This is just to prevent hue distortion from the luma curve)

Well, a couple month ago i did my own LUT, and have a post about that in the other thread:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stiils from Daniel Peters https://vimeo.com/danielpetersdop.  LUT i did is: gh5 v-log to bmd ursa mini bm_film

Maybe someone will be interested: https://yadi.sk/d/IPxyk13d3GXd4o (rar with LUT)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can find this lut for gh5 lut assist in attached files : BMURSA.vlt (cant say it looks similar to the original LUT for NLE but it's ok for in camera exposition judgement)
I want to find some "official" or more accurate and 100% match LUT for VLOG gh5.
Actualy i think that my lut is not 100% match, bu really good as a start point... It have more natural color and less contrast compared to original filmlog from BM...
Anyway... You can try it, its free;) And tell me what do you think
P.S: you can see a little banding in gh5 footage on the image above, just because i take a compressed gh5 mp4...With original 8 or 10 bit footage you would`t see any

If I had the 5D3, I'd support it! Perhaps I may yet (though it definitely has better native color than the GH5)
My favorite was 'Short-Cut' - I showed it to my coworker, who is a runner ; )

Yes! (More on this later this year) Its decidedly closer than GH5 V-Log
ML Raw operates entirely from the SD card right?
As it is a high quality format, I think a conversion might be in order (My aim is to focus on 10 bit or higher)
What is your workflow like? Do you currently convert to ProRes?

Another, very different image form David (he noted these were just Daylight Soft with some adjustments for exposure):

Right? They can say, "Our camera gives the best detail"
With the OLPF side-by-side, you can really dial it in to get the Alexa aesthetic - here are new settings that are even better than the previous for the single node approach:

    Ok, figured it out.
Here's how to key out the edges and apply any Resolve adjustments to just the non-edges.  This will allow NR without blurring edges (or any other adjustments you want to make).
In the Colour panel create two nodes Add the EdgeDetect OFX plugin to one of them to make it the "key" node (Node 1 below) Connect the video signal like this:
Make the adjustments you want to in Node 2 (eg, chroma NR) Adjust the settings in Node 1 to refine the mask that gets applied in Node 2 (I recommend adjusting Brightness to maximum to get a strong mask) The above setup excludes edges from being processed in the node, but it seems like you can also exclude other areas as well by adjusting the masks in Node 2 like qualifiers or power windows too, so you could (for instance) use the above to de-noise non-edge shadow areas by having the Qualifier in Node 2 exclude brighter areas of the frame.
    Enjoy!
I wish I had worked this out before so I could do heavy NR processing without heavily blurring the video!!

    5-10-18 Update to V2
    - Emotive Color component branched into three routes: Main/Soft/Pop
    - Main/Soft have V1-like luma placement (for brightly exposed footage)
    - Pop maximizes highlight range (for base ISO darkly exposed footage)
    - Relaxed Noise Floor
(The default no longer requires luma placement for bright exposure, à la V1)

After owning this camera since launch, I still have to admit it remains my favorite hybrids. Footage is useable straight out of the camera. Canon color remain a notch above the rest. And even with a baked in picture profiles, the codec allows the footage to be pushable when CGing in post.
Still a great camera and top pick in mid 2018!

hi. V1 vas close to alexa in case of colors and provided references. As i can see now there are some color differens between new and old luts. So... do you try to create more correct alexa colors or what?)

for me the main idea is to create the transformation lut for gh5 vlog to achieve alexa c-log colors and dr as close as possible. Following instructions to shoot with the same wb and exposure
