  1. Actually I own both GH5 and A6500.  I do some real estate.  Depending on what I was shooting the A6500 wouldn't be a bad choice as the 4K is definitely sharper and it has more DR.

I use the GH5 a lot because the people I work with really like the stuff coming off of it and use the 60P often.  Also as a general camera it's been great (interviews, no recording limits or over heating etc but trash af-c and you have to work for shallow DOF).

BUT, if I was only doing 4K 24p real estate stuff with quick takes (no overheat worries) the A6500 is not a bad option.

Anyways you can't go wrong with GH5.  PS if you are shooting low end RE... really none of the clients care, and can't afford to at that price point.

  2. I hope they have improved the drifting horizon and response to g-forces.

I tried using it in a car and the horizon really go out during and after turns.  Not to mention you can notice it while moving normally (tilt up and down moving backwards or forwards and tilted horizon if moving so do sideways).

I was thinking of using the V2 in a helicopter but after this experience don't think it will work very well.  I know the older Ronin has tons of complaints for drifting horizon as well, but v2 sucks too for that.

Does anyone have practical experience with these two mini sliders? (They look solid and are affordable.)

YES.  Avoid at all costs.  I have the first one.  It is not smooth at all, a total POS.

  4. WB is better than GH4 and SOOC colors have been improved over last generation, less Panasonic weird yellow/green.

I never had GH4 but color is decent... nothing in this price range grades super well, you have to get it relatively close in camera.

Really can't go wrong for video unless you NEED low light then of course Sony A7 series is the way to go.

  5. 12-35 works well.  35-100 v1 acceptable with ibis (dual is 1) but it has crap ois for video.

Generally a challenge to get shallow dof.

I mainly use the native lenses for running around. For interviews then I'll slap on the sigma 18-35.

Really depends on what you are using it for... But for run and gun it's a good setup. Assuming you don't use uwa but my 7-14mm gets used a bunch too.

  6. Wow you are lucky you asked those questions.  Do not buy the Lexar cards (nothing wrong with them they are great) because they do NOT work well with Panasonic cameras for some reason.  Very glitchy and laggy.  Search for "best SD cards for gh5", someone has a blog on it showing the speed of different cards. I experienced these problems myself with Lexar and Panasonic.

There was another post a while ago about a video breaking the 180 rule (consensus was the guys shot with shallow dof and scenes without too much motion so it wasn't as noticeable).  I try to stick to it as much as possible because shooting a scene with a lot of motion at high shutter speed looks weird and stuttery.  However if you don't have too much motion in the scene or can hide the motion with shallow dof you can minimize the distracting aspects.  Search for some video comparison and see what you can live with.  Some people seem not to care.

  7. I would highly suggest doing some practice shoots before embarking on this project if it is important to you.

Even though I did a ton of research, my first times lighting interviews were very sad and even now I am constantly learning and trying new things. To do a good job you need to be able to control the lighting or your natural light better be really good. If you are using low powered LEDs, there is no way those are going to compete with the sun. If you bring lights then you need light stands, and then do you need a power or batteries, if batteries how many, how will you keep them charged etc... Lots of things to think about!

I recommend monitoring the audio during the interviews, especially if you don't know anything about mic placement etc.  Without listening you are just banking on getting lucky, so many things could go wrong like wind noise, or their clothing rubbing on the mic (ask me how I know).

For b-roll, slowmo 60fps to 24p works a treat with a gimbal.  I love using my crane even if it is not perfect.  It's really convenient for grabbing dynamic shots you can't otherwise get. But you don't need it depending on your tolerance for shaky cam and just doing simple pans and tilts.

I am using the GH5 and a6500.  For 60fps 4k the gh5 is great considering the price and performance.  For wireless lav I'm using the Sennheiser avx.  The latency is annoying but it's so convenient for omb because the auto gain just works and you don't have to worry about clipping as much.

Good luck traveling with all this stuff! Try to keep it simple!

What mode did you have the stabilization in???

I didn't know you could switch them.  I just turned it on and it said dual IS 2.  The mark 1 just says dual IS with GH5.  I know the 70-200mm have different modes, but the Panny just has an on/off switch...

Turning on stabilization while on gimbal usually produces much better footage in my experience.

The complaints are because there are other lenses that work just fine (12-35 f2.8) not to mention the older model that is cheaper.  I would not use OIS for the 35-100mm F2.8 V1 without IBIS, with IBIS the micro jitter issue is vastly improved and it is useable.  But the supposed "improved" v2 does even worse because of the jerks.  WTF...

I will try to write to them (just tried to email on their support page, response: we are not checking this email account anymore), maybe they will issue a firmware fix like they did for the older version.  But they won't do anything unless more people complain.  Until then vote with your wallet!  Don't get this lens for video!

  9. Considering the older Mark 1 does not have this issue, I don't think I'm being unreasonable in expecting better or at the very least the same level of performance considering the price and the fact that they have barely updated this lens besides painting it black.

Except for the micro jitters, the mark 1 does quite well on the gimbal and I use it frequently without other complaints.

The 12-35 also worked pretty well and no complaints there...  Don't think I'm being unreasonable considering I'm not doing anything to crazy.

It jerks on simple pan motions!!!

  10. I haven't tested this extensively yet, and I don't have 2 GH5s to do a scientific test of I vs II but I have noticed that the IS on the mark II is exhibiting jerky behaviour with my crane gimbal that I don't get with the mark I.

Even though the mark 1 is atrocious for video use, the dual IS with the GH5 makes it tolerable with the crane for the most part.  Sometimes it's still a bit jittery.  But with the V2 that I have, I get large and sudden jerks that I never get with the mark 1 (I also have 2x mark 1), especially when starting a motion or changing directions.  Maybe it is just this copy but I was expecting way better for the price.  I know they basically just used the same optics and changed a few things here and there, but if you have a mark 1 and use this for video, do yourself a favor and save some money and stick with it because the mark 2 doesn't improve on the IS (for video) and is actually "worse" because of this issue.  At this point I am not going to use it until I figure out what is going on or if it is just expected behaviour (doesn't seem like there is a firmware update for this yet).

Can't believe this coming from Panasonic... I know they barely updated these lenses and used the same optics, but come on.  This was the number one issue with this lens and they came out with a "new" model and didn't bother fixing it.  Ugh.

Thought I would post my experience because there is very little I can find on I vs II of this lens and actual user experience.

  11. Zoom H6 is what I am using but will probably upgrade to SD mixpre 3 or 6.

Really depends on your clientele but much of the time I just use a juicedlink direct in unless it's a sit-down interview.  The people I work for usually do the audio and they are still using the original zoom h4!!! (And a cheapo no name wired lav!). They seem to be doing great with their clients too!

The moment you start using a backing track the subtle nuances that cost $$$$ to record go out the window and completely unnoticed to most clients on the low to mid end.

If you are doing corporate interviews it's amazing how low on the totem pole you can go with your gear before anyone notices.

I am not advocating for cheap or expensive gear, just saying the requirements are vastly different depending on what you are doing.  From what I've read the old dr-680 does great as well, although the SD stuff will really make life easier with the actually decent headphone and camera returns.  The lineouts on the zoom and tascsm stuff aren't as good.  Can't wait to get the mixpre!

  12. One annoying issue I have is that the crane tilts in whatever direction I am moving.  For example if I am walking forward, it will tilt down, or if I am moving sideways the roll motor will tilt and the horizon will be off.

Really noticeable when in using the Panasonic 35-100mm, not as bad when using wide angles except on sideways motion where the horizon rolls left or right.

This happened with both V1 and V2.  Even if I perfectly balance the lens.

Unfortunately I don't think it will get fixed after emailing them.

  13. Well I stopped using the Lexar 1000x 128gb because I was getting the lag issues... occasionally when I pressed record it would take around 6-8s before anything would happen.

Unfortunate issue as they are the most affordable UHS-II cards and work great in my other cams.  Panasonic and Lexar not friends... Using Sandisk UHS-I now, same price as Lexar but 1/2 the read speed when offloading to computer :(  Sigh.

Are you sure the 2000x has no problems?  The lag issue happens sporadically so it's hard to pin down.  It's also kinda laggy in general when stopping recording.

  14. I'm using the GH5 right now, but also used the G7 because it was super cheap for 4k.

A6300 4k for real estate shots is no joke, shouldn't really overheat if you are doing short clips.  I also have the a6500 and the image is fantastic but I don't use it on shoots because of ergonomics.  I would use it more if I was doing more residential exteriors / interiors.

Good luck on your next move!

  15. For real estate, the last thing you want is soft 1080p from yesteryear.

(I still have my d750 but I only use it for still now, for real estate I use 4k downscaled.)

On the other hand, around here the market for anything other than luxury is flooded with cheap services because it seems like most realtors really don't care about quality, it's about price and speed for them, so the soft 1080 probably won't hurt you there.

For profile videos with shallow dof of course anything works.
