Even when working in 32bit float in After Effects I've noticed banding in HEVC S1 files and a darker different gamma compared with the same files transcoded to ProRes 422 in OS X first, where there is virtually no banding to speak of even in overexposed skies.

How are you transcoding to ProRes? Resolve?

  2. Dude….

Bought Pro Color 5 for my A73 and must say that I really like PP3. Yeah, PP1 has more dynamic range but in a controlled setting PP3 just has that feel that’s indescribable. Looks fantastic. Thanks for your hard work, it’s really appreciated.

I've always shot Cine2 as well using the Leeming LUT. The guy that does Phantom LUT's just color matched the a7s3 to his Arri and released a series of correction LUT's that bring them pretty darn close.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I use the Leeming LUT as well. I should also mention that it's crucial to custom white balance too.

SMDH...  Well, I just read the part that I copy/pasted from the doc and it clearly does say that those Creative Look settings are for BOTH stills and movies:

A selection of new Creative Looks makes it easy to create interesting moods for stills and movies right in the camera. 10 Creative Looks are provided as presets that can be used without modification or customized by the user, based on the currently selected camera mode.

So most likely, this is where Brandon set the highlights to -9 and the shadows to +9 and it was in the standard creative style.  In my a9 I only see Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpness in my standard creative style (would guess the same for the a7III), so the highlights and shadows setting must be some new options only in the A7SII.

Ah, got it. Had me going through my A7III for a minute until I read this second post. Thanks for looking into it, I sure hope we get a firmware update to include that option.

You are correct on Standard only having Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpness.  I'm not aware of Highlights and Shadows being in a picture profile setting.  So my first instinct was that it was one of the settings options in DRO, which would make sense due to the name Dynamic Range Optimizer.  But I didn't see Highlights or Shadows there either.  Makes me think these are some new parameters and levels for the A7SIII.

I have passed along this question to PRO Support and will let you know what they say.

Did you hear anything back? It'd be great if Sony implements a firmware update to add this function to the A7III.

    Yes, please. Thank you.

Interesting that he chose to not shoot that in S-Log3 and instead used Standard Creative Style with the following adjustments:

    • Highlights -9
    • Shadows +9
    • Sharpness -7
    • DRO AUTO

He then used Neat Video Noise Reduction with Luma Mask set on the shadows.

I think Brandon is most comfy with standard creative profile from using his other A7 camera's that are 8bit.  I wonder if the noise could have been less if shot in S-Log3 with a different exposure and/or external RAW?

How on earth did he adjust those Standard settings? All I see on my A7III is Contrast, Saturation and Sharpness and all can only be adjusted +or- 3. Is a new setting on the A7SIII????

I am a stranger to the Sony system (last cameras were Fujis, Nikon Z6 and Pana S1), but not to the "colour war" as we can't watch YouTube or browse forum without being drowned into it. Anyway, I like to remember that the last season of  "A Skier's Journey" serie was shot years ago on an A7S ii. I believe the makers are really talented story tellers and know what to do with an image. The serie was highly praised and, honestly, concerning, colours, hm...
As I am contemplating the new A7S iii for these type of content (+ real time northern lights), this is just a remembering...

The fact the they used SLog3 blows my mind, how on earth did they get rid of banding in highlights/sky?????

  9. What are the chances the A7III gets a firmware update to get at least a few of these features? Heck, I'd be glad to get 4K60p even in 8bit 4:2:0 and/or 10bit 4:2:2 in 1080p. The A7III is more than capable of this.

So 8K RAW is 3250 Mbps?

No crop in 4k120p? I wonder if it’s line-skipped hell.

I’m really interested in the 4K modes. What’s cropped, what’s not. Autofocus in all modes?

This. My concern is that the 4K will look like the FHD on today's mirrorless cameras. For example, the Sony A7III downsamples 6K in camera to 4K. Looks great. The FHD (1080p) on that body is pixel binned (or line skipped). Soft and some aliasing and moire. 8K on the R5 will probably be spectacular but I would hope the 4K would be too. Can't imagine what FHD will look like on the R5 or why it's even an option at this point.

Still In development, but results are great and match between S1/S1H HLG and V-Log

Made for HLG with Rec2020 gamut on the A73.

Nice, looking forward to the final product.
