My guess is that on the 1Dx III they went with a more conservative approach with no IBIS, probably and heatsink on the sensor, larger body and pure guess probably running the CPU and lower clock speed. Imagine they would have given RAW 5.5k 60fps with AF but only for 15-20min before overheating there would be a huge discussion, not reliable, not professional etc.. but personally I would love to have this option. I really like the RAW 5.5k quality is the sweet spot for me but the RS is quite severe. If I could choose two improvements via firmware would be: - AF enabled on 5.5k 60fps even with time limit like 15 min - Zebra (this one they should really do it)

I shoot tons outdoor and under the sun.... surfing, horse show jump, trial bikes, parkour, mtb, car racing.... but I could hire a grid girl to hold an umbrella.... actually two... one additional with a fridge for the R5๐๐
-
Seems like the cooling system puts the heat on the body so if there is a direct sun that warms it is not able to cool it down. This would explain why is not the temperature but the sun playing a role....
-
It does not have dual gain iso.... afaik
-
sorry I though you were talking about A7S III vs R5.... I was referring that the R5 is sharper than the A7S III
-
Check the comparison.....4.2k oversampled vs 8k oversampled....
-
So far from what I saw: 4k <= 30fps details: R5 4k > 30fps details: A7S DR: ? RS: R5 but to be confirmed in which modes. Photo: R5 Thermal: A7S but seems an issue here too. Card max size: R5 Dual card recording: A7S 10bit 4:2:0 NLE HW accelerated: A7S (to be confirmed by test) RAW R5 Lowlight A7S 120p with audio A7S Colors R5 (still to be compared) AF ? Super35 R5 Audio A7S with the adapter HDMI A7S Battery ? IBIS R5 Ugliest menu color๐ A7S These two cameras they should have a baby and then it would be the one ๐

The RS seems better on the R5 that is crazy but I think it was tested in 60fps but I'm not sure....
-
At the end the only real test is to rent it and to test it in our own worst case scenario..... there is the same issue with the insta360 One R some reports overheats and create moisture inside and mine I never had any issue even filming even 40 min under the sun at 32c...
-
Boy the ibis in the A7S is pretty bad. 4k 120 fps quality seems better on the A7S but not by much I was expecting more but whiteout comparing the original files and sharpen both until they break apart is hard to judge.

oversampled > 1:1 nothing shocking here
-
There we go with the amazing thermal advantage... seems the motto of these releases is: no fan no fun
-
Apparently yes 120 with af including eye and sound
-
The limit is there for thermal so it could be the same c..p as R5 or much better but the limit is thermal driven. I would never take in one shoot 15 or 20 min of 120 but many short ones yes.
-
Yep with a minimal 1.1 crop that is very acceptable. Limit is 20min so not that better than R5 but probably quality is better here. Also seems possible to record in 4:2:0 10bit that is good for HW acceleration for editing
-
yes and plus it has audio so you can use it at normal speed or for slow motion. this couple with probably better quality is a big plus for 120fps
-
Apparently is not continuous in 4k 120p max 30 min before overheating but still on paper the double of R5! On thermal I think the mpixels of the sensor has anyway a big impact so not sure are better is just much less data to handle as all the other A7 series they cannot do 60fps etc... I'm not interested in this camera but it looks like a very solid option let see some real test. Does it has DCI or only UHD?

4k 265 10 4:2:2 IPB up to 30fps on my high end gaming notebook is realtime just not all-i... se my resolve thread. But is all done on the cpu....
-
4:2:2 10bit I think are h264 no? h265 are 4:2:0.... but I'm not 100% sure
-
Although see my thread on Resolve and Canon format h265 10bit 4:2:2 All-I are way slower than IPB does not make any sense but I did try on 3 different PCs and is the same
-
ZCam are 4:2:0 10bit h265 afaik.... thus HW accelerated on NVIDIA 10xx and 20xx platform....
-
I agree, If it is h265 4:2:2 10bit will be the same issue and at 600 Mbits max I don't think it will be All-I. Incredible soft I did not see neither, too me it looks really good, A7sIII could be even better view that is a 1-1 pixel readout... but the R5 is for sure not incredible soft. Still for mostly video it looks the A7sIII is a more usable camera.

Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
gt3rs replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
What is the new information on the video that triggered you to cancel? 15min 120fps is what canon says on their limits so not really surprising no? In addition canon did promise 120 at 1080 as firmware update but we donโt know if it overheats or not. Having used 1Dx ii and now iii at 1080 120fps I take R5 4k 120fps with 15min limit any-day as the 1080 is really barely usable on the 1Dx Still the R5 is a mess for video and no way I would use it as A Cam -
Other than the anemic 12Mpix for photo it looks like a very solid video camera. Let wait for some more in depth test and comparison but for video it looks much more usable than the R5......

Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
gt3rs replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If using as photo camera for a while will hinder the possibility to use the HQ modes is a big problem. I'm ok that I cannot roll for 1h 8K or 120 but I'm not ok that I can roll only if the camera was not in use and after 30 min is useless. This is not good. I'm ok with limits for my b cam but not if it become a guess work..... One use case that I have is that the camera is in position as remote and I will start and stop recording for 30 sec and then a break of 5 min and so one for 1h.... now if it overheats just staying there switched on is useless
