  1. I think that jerkyness ir probably because people dont know how to set the shutter speed/export, havent noticed any problem with motion yet. The camera is quite amazing, IQ quality is quite stellar, I will be making a video today on an exhibition and then ill share with you guys. I really think this is the most underated camera out there at the moment, if you're a video guy.

  2. Hey everyone,

I got my adapter for the NX1 this week, and have been trying the camera out, I gotta say, the 4k is wonderfull, incredibly detailed, and with the right settings, it looks cinematic right off the camera. But i've been encountering an issue, with indoor lights, I cant seem to take the light flicker off...even if at 30fps, 50fps or wtv speed I choose. On my Canon 600D, if I was at 30fps, 50 or 150 I wouldnt have this issue. Am I doing anything wrong ?

  3. Hi all,

As some of you may know, I recently bought an NX1 (havent tried it yet, still waiting for adapters), and im investing most of my money in gear...Lens wise, im pretty much set, with a few Samyang and Sigma Art lenses, though they are great lenses, I want to go a step further into the cinema look. That obviously means going into anamorphic lens/adapters. So, what do you guys recommend, any specific lens or adapter ? I've been checking around ebay and theres prices ranging from 100-800€, so I really am lost on what I should get/investigate.

Any help would be very appreciated :d

  4. Just like the Nx1, it charges by USB (like a phone), you can even use one of those external powerbanks as a charger (I hear thats a popular choice). I too have my Nx1 in the box and can only fiddle with menus until my adapter for my canon lenses arrive, but it does feel quite good, and ergonomically, fits perfectly in my hands.

  5. RX100 MK IV / RX10 II are best for this, hands down. Forget the interchangeable lens mount options if you need a sharp image & moire free.

That's a good budget choice. Way off the RX100 IV for quality but not so far off NX1's 1080/120fps, which looks like upscaled 720p anyway.

Andrew, could you do a comparison between RX100 MKIV/RX 10II and Nx1 ? It seems that would be a great article :d

  6. Nx1 and rx10ii are over a thousand dollars. rx100iv is just under a thousand and does aliasing/moire free 120fps (unlike the nx1) -also with more detail than the nx1. At least that's my understanding. That has to be the cheapest camera for 1080p 120fps and with quality better than much more expensive cameras. Nx1 has a larger sensor though and interchangeable lenses and maybe you'd like those colors more. But for your specifications, rx100iv is the option.

Where did you see any comparison between sharpness on the rx100iv vs Nx1 ?  I would actually love to see those two together and see how they compare, I may be needing a B camera soon, and would like to know if they could do better tha nx500.

  7. I do believe having expensivier gear will send out a dif. message than with cheap gear, regardless of the quality.

I've been working professionally with a Canon 600D, and have plenty of works, but I have lost works because I didnt have 4k for instance. Where I live, fortunately, most clients dont know about camera brands (i'd be surprised if anyone knew what a Red epic was), they care more about resolution (hence my NX1 aquisition).

I think a good photographer/videographer can make amazing works, even with cheap gear, but I cant stop feeling bad, when Im at a wedding and see people with the same camera as me, even though I dont use kit lenses.

While I do agree that the 1D C is the King of Colours right now, you can get the NX1 remarkably close with some simple CC:

    1D-C-greens.thumb.jpg.89e4d5d75f28f1a4a4

    Image1.thumb.png.91bc612fd5bcdab9e74ea52

Probably better to do some CC for those of us on a budget. Just used the stock tools in Sony Vegas. To me, it shows that the NX1 is actually capturing the colour data, but just representing it in a different way (otherwise you wouldn't be able to bring it back).

    (NX1 on the bottom btw)

    Great work,

This is what I thought too, that it could come very close after color corrected, this just shows the incredible potential on this lovely little monster. Its without a doubt the best piece of equipment out there for the price range, yet its very very underated...alongside the people I know that are into photography/video, almost nobody knows about the camera or simply ignore it because of the "Samsung" name on the front.

  9. Great little side by side, i'd love to see crops and a more detailed comparison. What lens did you use on both ?! Colors on the 1Dc are trully amazing, detail wise seems to be on-par (maybe sharper on the Nx1 ?!), and DR obviously the 1Dc is quite ahead. The Nx1, from what I hear, is closer to the look of RED than canon, i'd love to see how it would stand against a Red Epic or Dragon.

But basically you've said it all, for the price, the NX1 is unbeatable and quite a wonderfull machine (mine is still in the box, waiting for canon adapters :( the pain is real :( )

Edit : Forget my post, Im reading the full article right now -.-

  10. 1D C stills are full frame though. 18MP is enough. 14fps burst. I've seen the 1D C go for as low as £3500 used. It is a stills camera with 4K video like the others, the FS7 isn't. That is a completely different class of camera. The FS7 by comparison takes ages to boot up and the menus are a way slower. Depends on your needs as always but I prefer the tiny 1D C by comparison, ergonomically. It is also lighter. You get most of the FS7's advantages like peaking, loupe over screen, zebra, etc. simply by adding a SmallHD 501, which is also a tiny combo by comparison to a rigged up FS7. Also... 1.3x crop vs 1.5x makes a difference. 1D C looks closer to full frame. And the stills are another reason to consider it, these being the best you can get (1D X level).

Still for the low 3500£ you can get an Nikon D800+NX1/GH4/a7s or any other sort of combination, which in the real world would make much more sense, at least thats what i'd think. Every Canon cinema camera is, in my opinion, overpriced and simply outdated, they are great tools and deliver great results, but still overpriced.

  11. In image quality, either stills or 4k video?  No.  Low light?  No.  Color/skin tones?  No.  AF tracking / sports shooting?  No.  Price?  Yes.  But, it destroys the 1dc.  Look, I like the NX1 and can't wait to see how it pans out later on - some very cool technologies built in for sure.  But I'm in the here and now.

The FS7 is a hell of a video camera.  People will certainly know you're shooting video with that thing.  Not too great at stills either, and the footage I've seen looks very...digital.  But to each his own.

The Nx1 has higher resolution stills (although 1.5x crop), 15fps burst, 120fps, incredible 4k (which I doubt would be much worst, considering its downsampled from 6.5k), incredible dif. in file size, Super Amoled screen, EVF, and costs what ?! 4 times less ?! The 1Dc is a great camera, but just like others, I dont think it justifies for the price, FS7 would be a wiser choice.

  12. My camera arrived today :d

Cant say how thrilled I am to try it (still waiting for the adapters to arrive though), but first impressions are, the camera is really small...I was expecting it to be near the size of the 7D, but its slightly slimmer than my 600D. Construction wise looks sturdy and that screen looks amazing. Cant wait to test my Samyang lenses on this beauty !

  13. Hallo Panny,

Yes, I used the MP4 video from Vimeo, I do not have access to the original files from Andrew.

About softwares, LUTs can be used with most popular video editing applications, like Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro or Final Cut Pro (with plugin).
Sorry but I don't know about Virtual Dub (I used this tool few years ago and from memory it can't apply LUT on video).

FFmpeg can use LUT files via command lines, more infos here : http://ffmpeg.gusari.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1820
But I think it's better to use a video editing application with visual preview.

    Hope it helps :)

Finally bought them, some great stuff in there :D

How do you use them in Vegas ? I cant find a way to use LUTs in Vegas.

  14. Hi everyone,

I've always used Vegas for video editing, its light, easy, fast and responsive, it works great (+ stabilization is fast and works great usually)! Previously I used to color correct in Lightroom, export the footage and then import and start editing in Vegas, but lately i've been trying Luts, and found some that I really love. Problem is, cant use Luts in vegas (or am I missing something ?), I tried searching for plugins, utilities, everything and cant find a single thing.

So the alternative seems to be to switch to premiere, I've been trying CC, but its painfully slow and makes the whole editing process such a headache.

So, is there any stand alone app that I can use for color grading alone (like Lightroom), or anyway I can use Vegas for editing/something else coloring ? As a last resort I can switch to another editing software if it justifies, but needs to be light and responsive.

  15.

I'd disagree about rolling shutter to be in the cons column.

Because in 1080p mode it has the best control over rolling shutter of any! (right up with Arri Alexa level quality).

Yeah 4K is bad, but manageable, you can always switch over to 1080 if the situation calls for it.

Mainly it is lack of mainstream NLE support that is holding me back from picking up a NX1. But if I see it at the right price I will anyway!

BMD cameras are amazing (I own a BMPCC, which I reckon is their best one they sell currently), but not what I'd recommend as a person's first ILC or as their only camera.

I agree the D750 is nice :-) But unless a person is doing half or more of their pro work in still photos too, then I wouldn't recommend it over a NX1/GH4/A7s/BMD.

Careful... if you play the "next camera" waiting game... you'll find yourself waiting forever!

*IF* you are going to play the waiting game, at least pick up a cheap as NEX-5N / GH1 to hold you over and keep you busy until that "next camera" does come along.

I've been playing the "next camera" waiting game for a year, I was certain I wanted the GH4, but after closer inspection, had I purchased it, I wouldnt have liked it as much as I wanted.

After checking some Raws a user here has sent me, Im totally confident the NX1 is a more than capable camera in stills, and videowise its still one of the best out there at an affordable price.

I dont expect the camera to last 5 years, but worst case scenario, I want a capable camera in 2-3 years time, that has the raw power needed to make semi professional videos.

  16. Hey man. I see alot of good advice here but I wanted to throw something out that worked for me for awhile. If your budget is $2500 or so get 2 cameras that check off all of your needs. G7 for convenience, long battery life, ease of use, 4k recording, etc. Blackmagic pocket camera for when you need top notch image quality with 10 bit ProRes or RAW. I believe with those 2 cameras you'd have all of your bases covered. Those 2 cameras plus a speedbooster would hit around $2500.

My budget for camera is 1,5k the other 1k is for a new capable desktop to help with the editing.

  17. Ricardo, if you work primarily in video and you want the best 4K camera then I follow your logic with the NX1.  However, I couldn't agree with TheRenaissanceMan more.  There's a whole lot more that goes into a final product than the image recorded in a camera body.  Consider this, a RAW based camera (BM or Canon with ML for example), records 14bit values at every pixel.   That means when you debayer each pixel you end up with 42bits of FULL color information.  In consumer video cameras, like the NX1, the camera takes each 12 bits from each pixel and combines them IN CAMERA with other pixels to create a 24bit FULL color value.  Those values are then further compressed into a video stream.  It doesn't matter if everyone has 4K video monitors in 2 years, say, 1080 video from a RAW camera will often be superior because most good video is shot for EMOTION, not resolution.  And filmic EMOTIONAL range needs dynamic range, NOT sharpness IMHO.

If you look at Oliver's reel you'll see simply amazing stuff, most of it shot with a GH3 (similar to the g6), which I believe will STAND THE TEST of time.

If you want a super-sharp, high contrast look, then sounds like the NX1 camera is the one for you.  If you want to shoot a wedding scene of a couple alone in a church, say and you want a little hair light, you'll wish you had a G6 and a small good quality LED light on a stand.  No matter how good a camera is, if you can't light it the camera can't see it!

What I loved about Mattias's video comparison is that, really, ALL the cameras were good!

I follow you, hence my hesitation and inclusion of the 5DM3, I fear the NX1 look would be too "digital", with oversharpening and over saturation, but with the new firmware updates, it seems all of that is gone, and it seems easy to grade.

The look/grade im looking for is something like this :

Detail preservation is good, so is color grading, but where I live, and my market place, some people care about resolution, or need high resolutions. I have lost jobs for not having 4k, and they would hire someone with some crappy camcorder that did 4k and be left with a terrible job. For my 1080p is still great, but having that extra detail preservation can be essencial in some types of works (architectural for example).
  18. 100% fake. It doesn't even look like Sony footage (not to mention why would you mke a big deal of '4k video' and then only upload 720p footage to YouTube).

    I can see it 4k.

Maybe the user settings were over saturated and what not, but its way too early to see, and this could totally be fake, it really doesnt correspond to what sony showed us.
