  1. I love Colorista. I have IV and I find the guided color correction to be such a quick and painless way to get a great base for grading. I haven't tried Pop yet but I do like in Mojo. But it runs so slow on my computer. Painfully so.
  2. Last I checked, the website still has the details of that codec listed as TBA, so hopefully Canon will get feedback requesting that it be 10bit and they will fold. Probably not though. I can't afford to buy the camera, but I am very interested in renting one next summer for a short film. I would shoot it entirely in Raw so that mid grade codec really means nothing to me. But for others, I hope it's available!!!
  3. Sorry, I made a misspec... I meant XF-AVC... which will be released next year in a firmware update.
  4. Man, was Panny color just better back then? Those GH1/GH2 videos look so good. I'm unsure, even with all the bells and whistles, if the G7/GH4/GX85/G85... even in some ways the GH5 look as good as some of these beautiful old videos I have been watching lately from the GH2.
  5. Well, I primarily use the 24-70mm f/4 handheld, and am planning on buying that 35mm f/2. My friend also has the 28-135mm, so I was thinking the SL1 could sit in my bag in crop mode. Then when using a prime, but need a quick long shot or some range, I could pull out the SL1. Or maybe it would be a good camera to have the 100mm L macro living on it. Is crop mode a 3X crop of the aps-c? Or is it 5X?
  6. Read the article, Reid has screengrabs from clips he took with it.
  7. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if their Rebel line gets 4K before their mid line does.
  8. That looks amazing. I just read the comments and he didn't even use Raw in that video. I think it was just the bitrate hack. It looks great though. That crop mode is amazing. Actually I'm not even sure he uses the bitrate hack.
  9. If you don't want to use MLVFS, Raw Magic works really well and can be bought through the App Store.
  10. Sounds pretty cool. Do you think this would make a better B-cam to a 5D3 than a 70D would, for second unit, due to the lack of moire? I always shoot in 2:35 with my 5D3.
  11. C'mon Fredrik, I am pretty sure I have read numerous times that the video quality will be much better, with the GH5, when the 400mbps firmware update is released. And the excitement for it is palpable. But those same people knock Canon for using too high of a bitrate? Why is this so hard to understand? It has been repeated dozens and dozens of times since the 5D4 has been released and then Panasonic was praised for offering the 400mbps codec by the same people.
  12. It's the same stabilization you praised in the XC10. With that being said, I cannot believe the company that started the DSLR revolution does not have a 4K capable mid range DSLR in 2017? Even Nikon has two. I really don't think it is about protecting anything, if it were, they wouldn't offer DPAF in every DSLR in their line up. A year ago it was admitted that they don't have the heat dissipation figured out yet. Apparently nobody wants the high bitrate codec from Canon.... oldly enough Panasonic gets praised for it... but whatever. Maybe in their upcoming FF mirrorless.
  13. I have the 24-70mm f4 and use it with the 5D3 and ML Raw. It's an amazing lens. The IS is superb and can look like it was shot from a tripod. On FF f/4 is also fast enough for SOME shallow depth. A great all around lens that lives on my 5D3. Here are some screengrabs, all shot handheld to give you an idea...
  14. Is the CineLikeD command different in the GH4, than the next generation?
  15. Also, I forget, but has there been any confirmation if the CineLikeD is possible with the LX100?
  16. Haha, I was about to ask this question because there are some cheap ones on eBay. How did the quality look with the small sensor? A small sensor Panasonic P&S was the first digital camera I ever had and I must say I loved the monochrome setting plus mjpeg codec of those old compacts. I wish we could get mjpeg back into some of these cameras.
  17. I wholeheartedly agree Canon makes a great tool and its DPAF, color science, humble codec and great build quality are great tools. And I don't think they should be dismissed by a lot of video enthusiasts simply because they don't shoot 4K. Other than 4K I'm unsure what they're lacking that would make a videographers life any easier? With native lenses you don't need focus peaking due to DPAF. Their humble h.264 codec and amazing color science requires less need for grading... so expose to eye in camera with maybe a little latitude in either direction (I prefer slight underexposure with Canon cameras) and you're good to go. Probably the easiest, most dependable tool around. As far as Fury Road goes, I'm sure BlackMagic cameras were used as well, they used a shit ton of cameras in that movie, but it's fairly common knowledge that the 5D Mark ii was used extensively throughout the film.
  18. I had the Mark V and the a6500. And let me tell you, I loved and hated both of those cameras. The RX100 V is so damn cool for a pocket camera but I got an overheat warning, then shut down 30 seconds into shooting slow motion in the middle of winter. I had the screen away from the body and every little trick I found online about precautions. I got the warning while setting up the menu without ever shooting a second of video. So it's basically useless. But I liked the sLog and Cine2 image so much I decided the a6500 and its bigger body would at least make it usable... it is " better" and man that is some of the nicest looking 4K I have ever used. sLog3 almost reminded me of Raw video with its detail. I live in the middle of the woods, so the way cameras pick up the details on tree bark and leaves is very important to me and sLog3 looked damn close to Raw. And sgamut 3 cinema or whatever it's called is beautiful. The camera is well built and the 5-axis was a joy to use with my vintage Minolta lenses. But again... in 35 degree Fahrenheit weather, I got the overheating warning. It never shut off, but that was just too much for me for a $1300 camera. So I returned it. Here's a small test video I did with it and sLog3 and cine gamut3. I can only imagine what you pros could do with it, if the overheating can be worked around... When the camera gets down to the $800 range or less, I may pick up another one. And here's a screengrab with lowlight in SLog2...
  19. I don't necessarily dislike the results, and I can see where you're going with it. Will be interesting to see and hear your progress. I actually found a deal for a GX85 that was waaay to cheap to turn down. With the new hack, and my Samyang 21mm lens, I am giving these cams one last try before I sell off all my m4/3rds stuff and focus my efforts on Canon and Nikon.
  20. The Cinema Raw Light is so interesting to me that I wonder if they will start implementing a 1080p version in their lesser models. A 6D2 with CRL at 1080p up to 60p would be a genius move and nobody would even complain about it not having 4K. Obviously, this is Canon we're talking about here, so it is highly unlikely they'll ever do such a thing, but damn it would be a smart move. Especially if they're having technical issues with 4K and overheating
  21. @kidzrevil I think this is showing exactly what happens when you over expose these cameras... especially when you are grading the image and not just correcting it. I think you did a fine job under the circumstances but I have a sneaking suspicion that if exposed, according to the in camera meter, at -2/3 to +/- 0 you may have ended up with softer highlights. That just looks crunchy. Did you use a Black Pro Mist? But that is a tough shot to expose for and grade anyway. I'm actually surprised the camera held up as good as it did.
  22. Good job. Nice color. Cool idea. It reminds me of a short I recently saw.

Okay, I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner but it sounds like the Contax Zeiss Distagon 25mm f/2.8 is probably the lens you are looking for. They go for about $400 USD... which is right around your ballpark. With the speedbooster it will be an f/1.8, f/2. It should be perfect.

What about the ZF distagons, they usually sell for around $6-700. The Nikon version has an aperture ring. Or I guess the better question is.... what's your budget? What camera are you using it with. And have you thought about Rokinon/Samyang lenses?
