Some people will think the FS5 is worth it due to the ergonomics alone. The FS700 is much worse in this regard. However, the FS700 does have a slightly better image and will last another 5 years on the market. A true classic.

Considering the financial outlay, for the money I would be looking at the Kinefinity Terra. I'm surprised that there's been no articles in this camera yet on EOSHD. Can't wait to see footage.

Yeah, but the ergonomics aren't really that relevant when you add a huge recorder to the back of the thing… The FS700 is the steal right now, you can get that whole rig for probably under 5k at this point.

I would say that the Sony FS5 probably can get much nicer color, due to the S-LOG update, etc. The colors out of the fs700 are seriously tough, they were improved a ton in the fs7.

Does this update enable 4k/120 burst? The FS700 can do this which is awesome.

Sometimes I wonder if Canon really assesses the market before spending time and money on a new product...

They appear to be banking too much on their lens mount. You can basically buy an FS5 with the 18-105 f4 powerzoom lens for about the price of this lens.

I just don't really know where it will sit in the market. The range is covered by both the Fuji Cabrio, and also their own 17-120, so it doesn't make a great deal of rental sense. Price-wise has already been mentioned.

It's like more and more they seem to be happy to be playing in niche spaces. As with the XC10, I'm sure this will be a totally fine product. But is it much more than something that fills a small niche? Are Canon happy to be playing in small niches?

This seems more comparable to the Sony 28-135, which is around 2500.

The pros will like this lens... You can control the zooming with grip on the c100/c300. To blow everything away I guess it would really need to be an F3.5 or F2.8. If this lens is amazing optically, that will be huge as well.

Has anyone used the Sony 28 - 135? That lens looks beastly for the price.

$5,225.00 for a T4.4? No thanks. I'd rather adapt something else. But hey, that's just me.

Are there other motorized zoom lenses available? Also these will supposedly work with the joystick on the new c100/c300 firmware... Obviously out of budget, but cool to rent for events and stuff where smooth in camera zooms are needed.

"C100 Mk II – Late July

This firmware will allow DAF, Focus Guides, One Shot AF & Auto Iris, Push Auto Iris to work with the CN7 & CN18-80mm lens (CINE Servo lens).

To support the function of the Cine Servo lens, the firmware update introduces a new capability for the joystick. This will control the zoom operation of the lens, up for tele, down for wide."

I know it was said before but i really hope i'll see it done sooner than later. Fingers crossed for this NAB which is about to come.

I am hopping for a BMCC 2.5K in a pocket like body with the raw capability of the first one in 60p. Add a proper screen and a 1.5h lasting battery and you have the best run and gun, pro enthusiasts, camera. I don't hope for a global shutter, the rolling shutter on the micro cinema is just good enough. The technology is there. Please BM make it happen before SONY comes and steals the thunder again.

    The perfect camera test camera.

A bigger one for those benefits such as XLR inputs and ND filters, and just looking bad ass to the client. Sony PMW-F3 gives maximum bang for your buck here! (US$1.5K ish secondhand, plus US$495 BMD Video Assist gives you 10bit 422 1080 60fps). A Sony FS700 is also reaching very low prices these days, so maybe consider that. Or a JVC LS300.

Is this true? I thought you needed dual SDI, or an SDI/HDMI converter for 60p on the F3?

It's super trendy at the moment to bash, or be 'disappointed with' Sony colour, but it's really not an issue.

It's not trendy… Sony is considered the spec front runner, but people purchasing the cameras are constantly disappointed with the colors.

Color is so important, how is inferior color not an issue? I'm not saying everyone should go run and buy t2i, but the 1DXmkii is going to put all of the Sony DSLRs to shame.

Below is what I see so often. The entire scene looks sickly. A C300 in that scenario would look beautiful, right out of the camera...

In the specific example it is just bad WB setting, nothing to do with hard light. I have been using a Sony for quite some time now, and even in the worst light possible I can get much better skintones than this. I am not sure how you are so confident that a Sony would be terrible.

This took me 20 seconds in looks. I use Sony footage all the time, theres no way a Sony at 12800 ISO on some S-Log setting could touch this.

It still depends on the noise of the camera preamp, how close you are to the sound source and how noisy the environment is.

In my experience, if the these points are somewhat satisfied then yes the videomicro can give excellent results even with in camera audio.

The Micro Cinema Camera has MUCH better audio than the original pocket.

I hope the following image will convince anyone that pleasing skintones has much more to do with lighting, camera settings & color editing than the ability of any camera to capture them.

That's just hard light... A sony in that situation would be terrible.

Super good and filmic look! Great! I'm going to find one!

Do you know where to buy a similar rig/cage in Europe (or something that could work with BMMCC and a monitor)?

Thanks, the camera is a lot of fun. Below are a few different cages that could work well. The fitted cage is awesome.

    Thanks for the video Ben.

When looking at the last scene this is what I see:

I guess this is normal Video compression right?

Here is what it looks like in Premiere. That type of detail on those trees has always been a problem, even with the original pocket. I don't think the 60p increases the moire or aliasing and overall it looked improved to me.

Re-uploaded the source file without sharpening if you're curious. Thanks.

    You're welcome. Sheesh.

I normally add sharpening, because it helps Vimeo not destroy the file when it compresses it. I also normally shoot a lot more shallow, but I was curious how the camera would do with deep focus. I don't own a Sigma 18-35 right now, but that is probably the best lens for this setup. I'll try dialing it down and re-upload. The main focus here was testing the 60p.

    thanks for sharing this ben

I know, that's the best part of the song. Thanks for checking it out.

I can't edit the post, but also would like to add that the audio is much better on the micro camera, also love the full sized HDMI port.

However I like your hotshoe rail and F&V ball head... where you get them from, any links to the actual items so I can order?

I'm loving the 35mm f2 IS. Not the sharpest less in the world, but the IS is huge for keeping your footprint down when shooting.

The F&V ball head is just off of amazon. I recommend this cold shoe mount as well, it came with a tool and is well built. The last one I bought was not.

The hotshot rail is a different story. The one I have actually came with the Eazy Handle V2. They do sell the cold shoe mount version, but it looks like it only comes in the 8" size. If that's too large, I bet you can email them and get a smaller size.

Eazy Handle is a cool company. They develop handles for skateboard filmers/DSLR stuff. It is all made in the USA and their service is really awesome.

    Cool. Glad you're enjoying it.

Agree on all points aside from the menu system...

Although the menus are very nicely laid out, the physical controls on this camera are completely laughable.

Better have a lens with an aperture ring on it and hope you don't ever need to change ISO or shutter speed in a hurry!

I agree, why not add a scroll wheel, but the pocket was a task as well. I guess I should say, it is a bit easier to navigate than one would think by looking at the thing. It feels less cheap over all.

  16. I am really enjoying using the new BMMCC. Black Magic basically fixed everything that was wrong with the original pocket. This was all shot handheld, used two IS lenses, Canon 24-105 and the Canon 35mm f2 IS. I know that this sensor will really shine when you use the Sigma 18-35 and other shallow lenses, but I do think having an IS lens makes the setup incredibly fun to use.

    Some thoughts:

Moire seems improved. (There is one shot in this entire edit that has moire. I shot at around f4-f8 for the whole day.)

The battery life seems to be at least 3 times higher than the original pocket.

The menu system is incredibly easy to use, despite having less buttons than the original.

Using the Small HD 501/LUT preview is really really nice with this camera. I used HOOKs LUT to judge exposure. The grade is just simple three way in Magic Bullet Looks.

  17. The 60p out of this camera is unbelievable. Shooting some stuff this afternoon. This is the camera I have always wanted.

The level of stress I have shooting with this vs a larger setup or a 5D3 raw is so much lower. It looks great and is really fun to shoot with. The Small HD with LUT support is really needed to get the best out of it. Running Hook's Basic LUT in the still below. Obviously don't judge the quality of the image on that, just showing how effective it can be for judging exposure. Screen grab taken within Small HD monitor.

    Rig:

Eazy Handle V2 (Really nice well balanced skateboard handle. Can be configured to fit basically any DSLR. Made in the USA. Really good price, multiple versions depending on your needs.) http://www.eazydolly.com

    Small HD 501

    Canon EF 35mm F2 IS

    HOYA IR Cut 82mm

  18. Just shot with the micro around town this evening. I love the bright record light RED when recording, green when in stand by. So many minor improvements that make the bmmcc so much better than the original pocket. This camera is a lot of fun to shoot with. The 60p is really awesome.

Hardly any I suppose since he speaks of 'a hair' and 'POINT 15'.

It's nice to know image has slightly improved. Then again, some time has passed, so it's only natural that more is possible with newer efforts.

60p will unlock a lot of creativity with these cameras. I'm curious how bad the rolling shutter will be in 60p.

    Sweet! Love Borrego.

:glasses: I'm always down to do some shooting. From what I've seen online they look pretty similar. I'm stoked on the obvious frame rate and battery situation, but it will be interesting to see if an IR cut is still necessary. Anyone know?

I wouldn't get your hopes up for that. I saw some heavy IR contamination on one of the first videos. Moire is hopefully reduced... 60p is so huge though. Cheesy Cams stuff looks good from a technical stand point :)

I dont' know which is better, but the 5D iii looks more real life to me.

The grading is so subjective and the learning curve is tough with the pocket.

The 5D is so incredibly easy to make look awesome. The lowlight is also amazing.
