  1. That is a shame, though I do hope they give it to us as an option in the NX1.

Agreed.  It would be nice to get a little extra reach.  Its tough to get specifics without any hands on reviews, but reports say its sampling part of the sensor rather than the full sensor readout.  It might be a processing issue with the smaller camera and a less robust image pipeline.  What the NX1 is doing with the new sensor, full readout and such is flat out amazing.

  2. The DPReview people didn't "discover" anything. It is clearly described in the manual. That those individuals couldn't comprehend the concept doesn't mean that it was "discovered".

Well right now we only have the spec sheet from Samsung on the NX500 and it doesn't specify Slow/Fast capabilities.

  3. It was just a precautionary move for me.  Once available this camera won't be hard to get.  Since its being released in Asia first, we'll see reviews soon.

It seems the spec is evolving if the 240fps is legit, because original previews said it topped out at 60.

  4. I actually hope it's not mentioned because the crop is an option in camera that was left on at that expo.

I was kind of thinking the same thing.  But Samsung is a little vague on its spec sheet, if you read Dpreview people are discovering the 120fps option and Samsung only lists a Slow/Fast mode in the video specs.  Perhaps the crop is an updated option since the processor can do full sensor readout, Samsung seems to be continually discovering more features that are made possible by the considerable processing power in the NX1.  I'm still holding off ordering though.

I've seen the 240fps screenshot too, there has to be another big NX1 update coming.  The more I shoot with it, the more I like it.  My NX1 just replaced the A7s, its so much faster and more responsive, better ergonomics and much easier to set up.  I decided 4k internal was better for me.  If the NX500 is a dud, there's always the LX100.

  5. I wouldnt count on them counting on that though..

A quote from Olympus a couple of weeks ago.. "we understand that other manufacturers - Panasonic, Sony, Samsung - offering 4K mode, even in top-level models do not. They just need to create content for their TV. They need to sell 4K TVs. While the content in 4K very little, so they want to have on the market as much as possible models that can shoot in 4K. But we do not see great potential for 4K at the moment. Once the market is ready for it, we will make 4K."

Well they're not going to come out and say in 6 months the new EM1 will have 4k.  That would leave the EM5II D.O.A.  Remember the old EM1 4k rumor, complete with a LCD shot of a 4k recording option that was allegedly being tested?  Looking at how the improved video didn't come via a firmware update, but an all new EM5 model, I think we'll see the same from the new flagship.  I think the above quote is all smoke and the EM1mkII will have 4k.

  6. Has anyone hooked up the NX1 to an external recorder?  I'd like to see if the quality is the same as internal 1080p after conversion.  If so, a Ninja Star would be a great option until h265 gets wider support.

Just bought the NX1 kit, inquiring minds want to know.

  7. The paradox of your article is that you want them (Canon/Nikon) to be more like Apple/Google....

Yet who made instagram, who made facebook, who made pinterest? It is a bit rich to blame the Japanese companies for lacking foresight, while Apple and Google were also left scrambling, as startups stole their thunder (with image processing/sharing).

    This.

Canon's biggest blunder in the last few years is not pursuing ML developers to help make its cameras better or creating the app capability and selling useful add-ons instead of the garbage Sony sells.  No matter how many smart people you have in a room, they can't think of everything.  There will always be startups that ask "what if" and then set out to find an answer.

Large manufacturers have a long history of keeping all development in-house, but many of them can't keep up with technological advancements.  Think about car info-tainment systems - they're awful compared to a $300 ipad.  What I'd like to see is my factory nav system with the option of running iOS or Android with apps to control car functions.  Instead I get a slow system with numerous bugs that can't stay paired with my phone.  Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus are all doing the same thing.  They control everything.  Google, Apple, Facebook and even Adobe are smart enough to recognize that they can't do everything - so they buy other companies that can do certain things better and integrate it into the mothership's ecosystem.  Of course the motivation is to simply make more money, or to keep someone else from taking a larger slice of their pie.  Instagram is a great example of not being able to build a better mousetrap, so they just bought the best one.

I like where Samsung is going by supposedly connecting with the ML crew.  There's a lot of untapped potential in the NX1, hopefully it can be unlocked with its own version of Magic Lantern.  And maybe this will spurn others to follow.

  8. I finally have a computer with enough horsepower to run Resolve, a 6-core trashcan Mac Pro.  Now I want to try ML raw on the 5d3 to compare with the A7s. Can anyone share a quick rundown of your ML raw workflow?  I'm editing with Premiere and FCPX and trying to learn Resolve. Thanks in advance.

  9. Maybe this forces upon us the good habit of renaming recorded files for better file management. Still bugs me also ;)

I shoot lots of ENG type stuff, so no long takes.  I can't rename hundreds of individual files from a shoot when I'm only pulling a few seconds from each.  I wish it were easier.

  10. This has been a complaint about Sony cameras for years, format a card or insert a different card and you start at 000001. My Nex5 and FS100 did it back in the day. One would think by now they could make that change, but it just doesn't seem like its ever going to happen.

  11. mlrawviewer for 5D3 RAW could be modified to use this system as a parallel batch processor to greatly reduce time converting MLV files to ProRes and even 422 10-bit H.264 (similar to XAVC spec).

This sounds interesting.  Anything that could speed up the process would certainly make a difference in my workflow.  Raw takes too much time for me right now.  Thanks for putting in the time and making it available to the community.  Same goes for all your other tests and such.

  12. It's even cheaper than 35 and 50mm Art models, that almost defies logic.

Its pretty crazy, given the more complex design over the 35 I would have guessed a higher price.  I'm not complaining.  I was going to get a 24/1.4L II, not anymore.  Just ordered the Sigma from B&H.

  13. The C/Y's are awesome.  There's a massive thread on Reduser that covers them in depth and lots of other resources on the interweb.  I prefer the MMJ's because of the ninja star bokeh on the German versions, but if you like it you can save over the MMJ's in some cases (35/1.4, 100/2).  With the C/Y's you can get close to the Samyang range with the 18/4, 21/2.8 (one of the best wides ever made), 28/2.8, the Hollywood 28/2, 35/1.4 or 2.8, 50/1.4 or 1.7, 85/1.4 or 2.8, 135/2, 2.8 and 3.5 IIRC, plus a few zooms - though you probably know the Contax zooms are one touch.  That can sometimes be a pain, but they're nice.  I have the 35-70.  There are others as well, the Makros are great and the 100/2 is what I would take over any of the 85's or 135's - its simply awesome.  The C/Y's have the classic zeiss rendering, very contrasty and that 3d look.

I always wrestle with going C/Y or Leica R for a set of matched lenses, haven't been able to decide yet.

  14. It is sad to see the artificial segregation of the camera through downgrading video features and ISO settings. I'm very much hoping Sony can manage a line-skipped 1.1x crop 4K video from their next 50MP sensor, that should resize down to a very nice 1080p file.

Hopefully its better than what they did with the 24mp A7/A99, which can only be called awful - loaded with moire, aliasing and very soft.

  15. What's your budget?

Canon FD, Nikon Ais, Olympus OM, Minolta Rokkor, Leica R and Zeiss C/Y all have lenses that come pretty close to the FL and speed to match most of the Samyang lineup (24, 35, 50, 85, 135) except for the 14.  All have gems that can't be matched elsewhere (OM 21/2, FD 24/1.4, 85/1.2, etc..).  I love the Leica look, very cinematic and some of the best built lenses on the planet.  The R lenses adapt well and don't have the issues the rangefinder lenses do with larger sensors.  Rokkors are similar in drawing style to Leica R, with gems like the 58/1.2 and 100/2.

Lots of options and you can put together a cheap kit with slower lenses or a more expensive kit with faster glass all with similar drawing styles.  I have a mix of Zeiss C/Y and Rokkors, but I'm eventually moving to all Rokkor or Leica R.
