  1. Good review. After shooting with the NX1 from just before Xmass i have shot a lot and had many ups and downs with the camera but do feel at this point i could shoot a TV ready or any project with it. The work flow is longer but the end result to me is worth it. I do most of the converting now over night letting it run. Also for work flow i am using Edius to edit with and they have a special HQX file format i convert to now ( so i am not using Prores) that gives me much smaller files to work with and real time palyback when editing even after using some filters, At some point it will start to slow down when i add in a lot of filters effects and a title but it still plays just not at full speed. I have found that i can trust the cameras auto focus after the last update its very good very much like a ENG camera now and using one of the image stabilization lens works very good for video as well. Still has a few quirts that need working out but over all i am loving it now. To my eyes the NX1 4k image quality and details is much better looking then the new Sony FS7 i have yet to see a video showing any better for over all shooting. I was really looking at the FS7 but for the price i could get another NX1 or the new pocket version to be out soon, Buy a small remote helicopter camera rig, A gimble. Good lighting kit, better audio recording setup and mikes, More lens and more for the same price.
  2. This was at a Native American Festival so it has a lot of colors. I made a custom color profile in Edius trying to mimike the look of one of the Red Giant Film Looks need to save up some more to buy that - i think i got it close maybe 75%.. All edited in Edius... Most all the dancing i am using up to 78% zoom in and out when editing so the 16x50 Samsung lens got some better zoom range after the fact. Most of this was all shot with the NX1 auto focus or the rest was focus on - off button no manual except for one shot. I also used a ND filter on the lens for the bright light outside.
  3. The EM5ii seems like it might be better then the NX1 for stabilization for what they have in it but it has no 4K video for me that's just not going to work I would never buy a non 4k camera at this point in time. I like being able to when editing zoom in on the image up to 100% with no image loss when outputting to HD it had become part of my workflow now. Watching some the EM5ii video one of the main videos they used a Gimble for most all the moving shots not the EM5ii on board stabilization. Also watching other videos showing it compared to other no name cameras on stabilization it seems to be way over done i know for sure i can hand hold the NX1 with the 16x50 stabilization lens just as stable as they show in the video for the EM5ii i have been doing it from the day i got my NX1. The EM5ii seems to have a lot of hype out on it but no real testing VS other real cameras. I have not seen much at all on its auto focus the NX1 is very good at it i am now shooting with it a lot now and trust it.
  4. Off topic - did you ever get the other music video edited shot with the FS7 you talked about a slower music band version would love to see it.
  5. I did the same thing i was a Nikon shooter for years and what i ended up buying was the Samsung NX1 and i am glad i did over the GH4. I use a adptor and i can use my Nikon lens i shoot a lot with the Nikon 24x120 F4 and a Tokina 100x300 F4 but also use the Samsung 16x50 2.8 that is a very nice lens. For auto focus speed and use for Video the NX1 seem to beat them all and the16x50 has image stabilization and it works very good when shooting video. Also the image quality from the NX1 is a bit better then the GH4 and more so in low light. The down side is you need to convert all the footage to be able to edit it but this lets you shoot more on your cards VS other cameras. Also with the last Samsung firmware update giving us HD Pro and more slomo the HD quality looks to be much better then the HG4 as is the slowMo now to. On the photo side of things it also taks very good photos and you can do timelaps as well all built in the camera. Here is my vimeo area of video i shot with the NX1 in 4k and edited down to HD. I have new video that is uploading right now that i uses a new custom color setting i made i think look good. I use Edius for editing as it has some advantage when converting the files you can use a special HQX format that takes up less HD space. https://vimeo.com/goactivemedia/videos
  6. What are your output settings. If you output to the setting they say to use ( If source is 4K H.265 (30P) --> Select 1920x1080 option.) at 1920x1080 it is faster but then you are not editing with full 4k files. I did that for many of my first videos but when changing it to quality (same as Source) it takes a lot longer and creates files 10 times larger. But if you are not going to do any zooming in when editing the 1920x1080 option looks the same as long as you are editing to export to HD 1920x1080 so you are changing it to 1920x1080 to start with so it will edit more easy and have smaller file size. It still keeps the great quality of the 4K files just down to 1920x1080 to edit with and use. The only thing you mess is if you want to do a digital edit zoom in the file is all ready at 100% VS the larger files that you can then zoom in on a lot. So if you are not going to zoom in when editing then i see no reason to convert to the larger files when you are going to export to HD in the end. But even if you do zoom in on the converted 4k to 1920x1080 option file it still has so much info in it doing a edit zoom still looks ok. Here is what it looks like this is the full 4k file size zoomed in https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t31.0-8/10498206_10202918002225505_7786317454219528511_o.jpg Here is the the same file zoomed into 200% but from a converted file to 1920x1080 you can see a little loss but with a moving video it is super hard to see any difference.
  7. Can you punch in on the footage to 100% HD size with out any loss.. I ask this as i just watched a vidio on this camera and the guy from Sony was saying you should never zoom in the 4k footage as it destroys it.. This is one of the main features i like about 4K that i am doing everyday now. So was wondering if that is a problem with their code for compression that it can not be zoomed in with out problems? Thinking about this camera myself need to save up some first but i want to zoom in to HD size when exporting in HD. I watched some of your other videos to i like what you are doing.
  8. I agree 24 is plenty wide on the NX1 unless you are in a small room with many people you want to shoot at once. I find that i need a lot more zoom then anything on everything i have shot so far even the 300mm i use is to short for some things that i would like to get in closer on.
  9. I have been spending a lot of time looking at the color grading of a lot of movies and some i just do not understand why they did what they did to the color so i want to chat about it here and see what others think. Just watched John Wick last night for the second time. The move has so much blue green color grading in it i feel the over done blue grading takes away from the quality of the movie. I love the move but the grading to me is way over done, One part they show his wife collapsing in his arms a wide shot and it is graded so over orange red you are over welmed with the color change you have a hard time understanding what is going on in the clip. Next movie is Gone girl. I liked the moved but hated the color grading i feel it was way overboard. To yellow for my taste.. Then the movie Lucy i loved the movie and loved the color grading of it - to me it was very real looking not over colored hazing the image with a color tint that is so over barring it takes away from the movie. In Lucy they sometimes use a bit of yellow but just the right amount not to over do it, Then other times they use blue just right so the other colors still pop looking good. This is by far my favorate color grading of a newer movie i have seen. http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs165/1102296456848/img/867.jpg?a=1117887819431 What would this grading be? not to much blue, not to much yellow is it a bleach bypass look? What are your thought on all this ?? just trying to understand color grading better.
  10. I was at contract 0 in the center. I had some of the shots that did get over exposed some as the sun was changing a lot this was all shot outside. I had to bring the brightness down and add in more contract to them. I shot 19 different signers over 3 hours. I have some HD Pro i shot to with this same setting i will play with next
  11. Here is a video with split screen. Out of camera on left Gamma C with custom settings -5 saturation -5 sharpness and +15 black and lumi 235. Color grading when edited on right .. 4 versions of two people singing. I think i like the first version the best the 3rd is a light blue tint the 4th is more strong color and contrast. Shot with a 100x300mm F4 lens https://vimeo.com/117736964
  12. I am fighting with all this to. I shot a lot yesterday i will edit some tests to show. I shot everything in Gamma C with custom settings and +15 black and lumi 235 its very flat looking so much so i had a hard time getting it to pop back it took a lot of playing with. I will post a short showing before and after with a few different looks. My problem is i do not have a camera with Log files to compare it to for the end results.
  13. I think any non Samsung lens you will be in manual focus only i have not found a adapter that gives any control so far. I what i picked up that so far has been great is a used Tokina AF 100-300mm f/4 AT-X II lens i got it used for $450 and is very sharp. I also use a Nikon 24x120 F4 lens that i find to be a much better range then my Samsung 16x50 2.8. When i am shooting with the 16x50 i can never get in as close as i want for a person talking for a talking head shot but the 24x120 is just right. I have found that the 16x50 is as wide as i need for anything i have shot when i want wide so i can not see getting any more wide lens for now. I would like to at some point get the 50x150 Samsung just so i can use the newer focus features on the NX1 then with the range of both the 16x50 and the 50x150 that will cover a lot and give you the one button push focus and focus lock or full auto focus on things it will work for. I would love to see Samsung come out with a 24x134 F4 that would cover such a great range. The big down side to the aufo focus Samsung lens like the 16x50 is it has no focus to Infinity i think that is a big problem when shooting Wanted to add the NX1 shoots so sharp that it is to sharp i have been shooting at -5 sharpness and some shots still look to sharp that i have had to put some blur on them.
  14. I did this test trying out some color grading settings, First is the video at its normal setting then it shows how i set the camera before it was graded then the same shot each version with a different grade applied to it this was all shot at a high iso. Very boring video. i should of done this with something moving lol.. This was with the new firmware update out today, the test shots past the first on are set to Black set to +15, Lumi 235, Gamma C set to - 5 sharpness and - 5 saturation.
  15. Its the AFON button that dose it. One push turns AF on next push turns off AF off locking in that focus for you I think i had to set it up in the menu for this to work. I am very happy with it for what little i tested it. One thing i did see that may be my fault is some time if i had something on both sides in the frame and wanted to focus past the side items into the center it would not focus in the center even with the center focus point on the center thing i wanted to focus on it would lock on focus onto one of the items in the side of the frame and i was using single center focus point. Will have to play with that some more to see what up with that.
  16. So you are grading me on one image of hundreds of thousands i have shot. I was showing good off camera lighting that has won me many awards, As for Jeff Acough in his photojournalist style of wedding photography i did that as well and was voted many years in a row by my peers to be one of the top 10 wedding photojournalist in the state of Florida and in Alabama in one of the same photo groups that Jeff got his noatratity from. As for working on the beach that is what we specialized in we shot more weddings each year then Jeff and most likely made more $$ then he did. I could of done my own photojournalist style of wedding photography seminars but i was to busy shooting to have the time. As for Photoshop i was on the first people world wide to start selling Photo Shop actions for creating wedding album designs to other Pro photographers and that then turned into a full design program that let you control Photo Shop to create album or any layouts. I sold a few thousand of them over the years then dropped it as we were so busy shooting i did not have time to keep updating it i stall have parts of the program that i never released. We shot 7 days a week weddings or portraits working 7 month of the year till all the housewives started poping up under cutting everyone and each other.. In 3 years we went from around 6 photographers in the area to over 150 with over 100 of them all being women. Many will do a 8 hour wedding and include all the photos on DV and a large print for as low as $500 with Jeff do that?? dont think so ether will i. The wedding coverage we did was a little of everything that photo was a posed photo as part of a posed session after the wedding they wanted but we also did a lot of fun walking on the beach shots as well as the full wedding coverage and any reception coverage was all candied but we used off camera lighting to make better candied photos. As for the photographer taking 1300 photos and they only picked the natural looking ones i would bet that is do to the fact they all they really had to pick from. We would include a 11x14 or a 16x20 print with each package the customer would pick the image they wanted and i can tell you 99% of the time they picked one of the posed portraits for the print they hung on the wall and we sold many extra framed portraits to family of the bride and groom. This is another area many of the new photographers do not make much if any money on selling extra prints and large framed portraits as they dont shoot any and they give everything away up front so then can not make any more on the job. I know i should not of posted a photo that it would open up something. Just wanted to add i also owned on of the first on-line photo printing services for digital camera files long before all the photo labs you see now ever started on-line. We also did lots of photo shows showing other photographers how to print large images from the smaller 2mp files back then and did one on one photography training. Also i am done on this topic back to video
  17. I don't know.. Just set it to that in camera. Its a new menu option Says PRO as a setting now.
  18. I made this video today testing the new feature of the NX1 using the Manual focus on - Manual focus off push button. Every new pan or people moving in closer I re-focused using the push button focus for a second or less then it is locked into Manual focus. Was lucky to come across this fun group playing drums on the beach at sunset for the test footage.Recorded in the New HD Pro setting with all in camera auto. If you see any exposure going up or down most on the last clip it is me changing settings or moving the ND filter i have on..its not exposure drift. It was getting darker fast as this was shot at sunset. https://vimeo.com/117133557
  19. (If you want someone to feel how you felt when you were there you have to do photoshop work.) You have to be kidding right.. If you shoot it right in camera you have to do very little editing at all to show how the event went down and the feel of the day or of a session. I almost never use PS anymore Lightroom is much faster and gets the job done fast when you shoot it right to start with. If you a mood tint do it in lightroom in one second and you done. What do you do in PS that is so mandatory. Average Joe will improve when they never use automode and learn how to use the camera to get the image and feel they want with the camera setting they set it to.
  20. Photography is for sure dying i went from $3500 jobs booked all the time to dropping to $1200 over a few years then i sold my photography business and got out. Digital cameras is what killed photography. Back when you used film it took great skill to get a good exposure and you had less Shots Film to get the shot with. Then digital come out then everyone got a digital camera and then most people started to like what they shoot so much they could no longer tell good quality work from snap shots. The fact is back only a few years back most photographers were all men then after years of digital it seems like now its most all house wives making extra money undercutting all the real photographers that are left hanging on. What kills me is almost none of them know how to use their camera in manual as they do not understand it. I specialized in Off camera lighting all bringing more equipment and more skill to get it right most new photographers are not even entrusted in learning to take better photos they just want more cheep jobs. This is a shot of mine all off camera lighting balanced to the sunset background. You can not get this look with on camera flash or on flash. I also designed and built and rented out the wedding setup and wedding chairs to them. Worked on the beach 7 days a week shooting all summer for years before selling the business. This was never put in photoshop i edited it in lightroom very little.
  21. From what i read it was out by Samsung but only if you DL from your camera by WiFi into the camera but was not out yet on the hook camera to PC to DL so then a few sites DL and posted it for people to grab. Then the next day or so it was taken down. This is one site that had the first info on it. http://www.sammobile.com/2015/01/15/samsung-nx1-firmware-v1-20-now-available-for-download-heres-the-feature-list/
  22. Here is a video right out of the camera uploaded to vimeo showing the new focus on and off feature. Turn up the sound and you can hear the clicking as i turn on and off the focus. This was shot in the new HD Pro setting i have another one i am working on also shot in the new HD Pro Andrew i DL the new update from a link posted on the NX1 group on Facebook. I see no difference in the Gamma's ether.
