  1. @BTM_Pix been researching this a bit more and seems like all I need is one Tentacle Sync E MKII to connect with the Zoom F4 (via TC in) then to the Zoom F3 (via bluetooth) and if necessary, the Ninja V (via the 3.5 line-in/LTC). I'd just need to reconnect them if I'm shooting for many hours to avoid audio drift. Or am I missing something?

I’m picking my Atomos Connect up the week after next (they had it in a heavily discounted bundle with the AtomX Cast which turns the Ninja V into a 4 camera switcher) so I’ll report back if it works as advertised!

Thanks for all insight! I've heard the Atomos Connect was quite buggy and underdeveloped upon release - have all the issues been addressed/fixed?

  3. @IronFilm I have a Zoom F4, Zoom F3 and an Atomos Ninja V+. As a OMB hobbyist I don't usually need timecode but ran into a scenario recently where I was passing footage off to a friend and it would've been useful to have in that case. With all that in mind, what in your opinion would be the most prudent timecode system I should invest in?

As always thanks for being so gracious with your knowledge over the years!

  4. Just finished a passion project shoot where I went with an R5C and two 5D MKIIIs with ML. It had been a minute since I'd used the 5Ds, and for some reason, today was the shoot they decided to act up - and boy was it ever painful. Enough for me to get the message - so while I'll keep the 5Ds for ever and ever, I will prob never use them in a talking head interview capacity again.

I'll always have a soft spot for the 5D/ML combo but in 2023, it seriously is not worth the hassle anymore, imo.

  5. Here's a more comprehensive list of the R5C updates via Barry Griffin's IG: https://www.instagram.com/barry_canonproimaging/

Dual Fisheye: Enables Left/Right switching for VR recording

    Improved Video/Photo mode switching

    Adds Power Saving Mode

Enhanced Clear Scan resolution (improves compatibility with LED walls).

    Adds Digital-Teleconverter function (adds 1.5x / 2x / 2.5x / 3x magnification)

Option to change WFM & Vectors cope size and transparency

Adds Canon 709 / BT.709 / CMT 709 (same as previous CEOS FW update)

Adds ‘G Gain’ White Balance option in Custom Picture settings

Adds subject selection via Lens Control Ring as an assignable function

Additionally Youtuber Yusuke Osawa just released an interview he did with a Canon rep about the announced FW updates. Might be worth checking out for some: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uquTpEvgCRg

Thanks to user 'sugoroku' over at DVXuser for translating some key things not mentioned by NewsShooter or Barry Griffin. Specifically the following (take everything with a grain of salt obviously!):

"1) Extended battery life. It only works with XF-AVC and not for RAW recording but should extend battery life up to 30% longer.

    2) Two autofocus improvements. One being detecting human head more precisely especially when facing backwards and the other being focus tracking box changing its size and shape depending on the tracking subject. (around 15min. mark on the video link below)"

  6. Oh man, these are pretty much all the FW updates I had hoped for!

"Improvements to the EOS R5 C include support for the EF-EOS R 0.71x Mount Adapter, faster switching time between photo and video modes, a power saving mode, 2x magnification during 8K MP4 recording and a digital-teleconverter option, maximizing flexibility by providing a quick way to increase the telephoto capability of the lens used."

Yeah it works, but you loose the lowlight advantage in S35, I found FF mode still give u more much cleaner image, and you lose the FF bokeh look unless you got speedbooster with EF lens.

Most people I know using an EF-S lens are doing it with the R5C and the basic EF-RF adapter. Where I'm confused is where you say you'd lose lowlight advantage - bcuz the Canon oem speedbooster would actually give you an extra stop of light. But because it also widens your focal length, I'm assuming you'd have to shoot in either S35 or S16, but you'd still have gained an extra stop of light, no? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're getting at? My apologies if I am!

and yeah the power drainage situation is the number one deterrent on this otherwise mega capable true hybrid camera.

Just came back from a passion project shoot in South America. A mix of talking head interviews and capturing b-roll on most days. I had 6 batteries (4 oem and 2 off brand) - no grip - and the battery drain issue wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be. Of course we all have different workflows/needs etc.

Thought it worth mentioning that the R5C internal audio is imo the best internal audio I've ever used/heard from a mirrorless/DSLR cam. Maybe not as good as a C100/300 etc but I am so used to having to find a way to minimize the internal preamps with some kind of external recorder's that I was truly surprised when I realized I could just plug my G3 directly into the mic/line and get pretty good results.

To be clear, if you're buying an R5C - the days of also needing an external recorder and Sescom attentuation cables, etc, etc (at least for one/two person interviews), are over!

Will also add that there's some discussion leading some owners to think the R5C might have an audio limiter built in to the internal chain - similar to what the C70 and other C-line cams have except with the R5C it doesn't seem like you can turn it on/off.

  11. I am currently running n gunning in South America for a family passion project. I've got an R5C, a Sennheiser G3 that I plug directly into the cam, 6 batteries, a mini stand and a basic ballhead. I brought a Zoom F3 just in case but haven't needed it bcuz the audio I'm getting plugging the G3 directly in-camera is solid. I sold a bunch of my Canon lens so I could buy/bring a 35mm RF f1.8 IS and the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 OS ART. I've been using all natural light, and figuring out subject placement day-of on the fly. Of course it helps that I'm in a place that is sunny and beautiful 24/7 - but I can tell you I was only comfortable travelling this stripped down bcuz the R5C comings with pretty much every light and visual measurement tool you need (except for timelapse). So far the interviews have looked great, grabbing b-roll has been easy (the various crop modes have also been clutch for this!) and I definitely see myself using this type of stripped down setup more often!

  12. Will likely pickup a used one now bcuz if they drop the 30 minute record limit in his next FW update the prices will go up. At least until the R5 II arrives which is looking to be longer than we thought. Also hoping these reports bode well for the R5C. Would love to see more comprehensive/robust AF settings on this cam + some power options that allow you to get better batt life in exchange for the loss of some functionality. Aside from that I really love the R5C - it's a beast of a cam imo!

EF is on the way out now, it's been a good run.

True, but not for a while bcuz practically speaking, unless you're a new shooter making your first foray into buying glass, what are the actual advantages of buying into that system now? Especially with all these Canon adapters that essentially give the EF very practical advantages over the RF line.

  14. @herein2020 some interesting points re' the R3 vs R5. I am very close to squeezing the trigger on the R5 and calling it a day when it comes to thinking about cam bodies in the forseeable future. One point you sort of touch on that I agree with is the ability to build up and strip down the R5/R5C vs the R3 - especially coming from a 1DC. I also think a pro/con of the R5C specifically is how many options it gives you when it comes to the needs of a video shooter. From the codecs and monitoring options to the resolutions and the crops. Basically, if you want to just hit record and shoot, maybe the R5C is not for you - but if you're ok with having options AND remembering to adjust those options depending on your needs for any given shoot, then the R5C is great imo - but - would've been perfect if it had some power saving options (even if those options disabled certain functions).
