I'd prefer if Blackmagic didn't have us hanging around for 12 months in anticipation, each time they announce a camera. They should avoid announcing at NAB and just announce it when it's ready I think. Otherwise, they get a reputation for delays and that's a bit unnecessary. NAB creates a buzz I suppose.

I would get shot of the 12-40mm actually, put the 28mm f2 and 85mm f1.4 on a speed booster instead.
Forget the 18,35 and 50, the 28 and 85 are the unique ones.
750 is a 'just ok' price, try and get him down to 700 at most.
By the way... I have the modern ZE 28 and 85, plus the old Contax Zeiss equivalents (well... my vintage Zeiss 28 F2 is actually in Pentax housing!!)
Although the images are pretty much identical between them, I do find having a native Canon mount handy and build quality is superb on the new ones. My Contax Zeiss 85mm F1.4 is a bit wonky now after a lot of use and ageing!
The 28mm is fine wide open... the 85mm is quite soft at F1.4, best at F2.0. Neither are 'perfect', they still look very vintage.

Personally I'd always go for the contax versions.  Made in DE or Japan.  The ZE/ZF lenses suffer from modernisation of manufacturing processes - open one up and there aint brass mechanical parts in a ZE.  I expect the glass will also not be German / Japanese.

IMO the 28mm/2 is one of the most over rated lenses ever.  way too expensive for what it actually does.  28mm lenses I find boring in general, and paying premium for an f2 where dof is so deep anyway it'd a waste of big bucks - particularly since at f2 it looks like crap.  I'd sooner get a contax 25mm/2.8 and a 35mm/2.8 for the same price as the single 28mm.  Or plump for the 35/1.4 for the extra £100.  Now THAT IS A LENS

On the flip side I think all of the faster zeiss dslr lenses should be avoided.  You pay a premium for the bigger apertures but when used wide open or even 2 stops closed they really fringe in a nasty way.

    Not with a speedbooster.
That said, you're better off looking at Contax Zeiss than ZE.

I just bought the Contax Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.7. I haven't received it yet but the prices are relatively cheap for that lens. I think the Hollywood runs about $800 for a decent copy.  Not sure if the ZE is equivalent, but it probably is close.
Hmm, that's a tough call. I probably would do it and then slowly build a nice collection of Zeiss. But, as araucaria said, you do have a decent set of lenses already.
    Good luck with it.

Personally I don't think that's a good plan, they are good lenses but the ones you already have aren't bad either and having a single one of those on the gh4 crop is totally pointless.

Totally depends on the price. The 28 2 is the same design as the hollywood as far as I know.

    Ciao!
I use my Panasonic G6 a lot and I made some shot in AVCHD but, differently from MP4 shots, it is very annoyng to preview them before importing in my NLE.
Do you know if there is some converter - maybe free - so I can look at them quickly?

    Thank you very much! :)

I did. Very minimal grading to be honest. I used the Cineon Film Contrast 1 LUT, and added a bit of saturation in the blues.

It's very easy to use: I'm lucky enough to live 1,5 hours from the SturdyShot's builder (he's in Rome), so I went personally to try it and I bought it.

He balanced it mechanically for my GH4 and Olympus 12-40 f/2.8, then for the same camera and Panasonic Leica 25 f/1.4.

After that he used the software to give the 3 motors the exact power for my rig and he suggest to not change lenses, unless doing the mechanical balance again (by myself, because I can't go every time to Rome).
The batteries lasts for 60-70 minutes, he gave me 2. So I had plenty of time shooting with one and only at the end of the day I had to use the second.

The software parameters are quite easy to change, so you can improve your setting after some days of use.
Of course I used the camera's LCD

It's not so cheap, but I bought it because the builder is very serious and if I broke he can repair it quickly, in one day

Thank you very much for your kind words, Cinegain
I also picked the Olympus over the Panasonic, because the final quality is slightly better to my eyes.
Normally I love my little FD prime collections, but on the gimbal a good zoom is more practical and the second setting (for the Panasonic-Leica 25) come in handy for a lot of shots.

Jacopo - the MiniSturdyCam builder - has a GH4 with 12-35 OIS on one of his gimbal and in that way you are 100% free from every imaginable micro-jitter, even at 35mm.

For me the stabilization of gimbal itself is more then enough with any non-stabilized lens, but he's so honest that when you contact him to talk about his products, he starts from the little "cons": of course he talks about "perfection", he's a truly passionate maniac about "flying" movements, but the gimbal is super stable, no problem at all.

He's a very nice guy and I really appreciated his way to conduct business: I asked his opinion between the bigger SturdyFlight and the cheaper and smaller MiniSturdyFlight, and he recommended me to buy the latter, because he said that with my camera and lenses the MiniSturdyFlight would be perfect. He's very disposable also by Wathsapp and Skype.

I hope this gimbal will lasts for some years, because after I tried I cannot stay without anymore, because it speeds up everything: besides the normal steadicam's work you can use it as a crane, as a dolly, as a monopod...

A beautiful video for a beautiful song! I love the look, very Arri-like in my opinion. How did you color grade it?

D750 and BMMCC are my top picks. The GH4/G7/GX8 have excellent 1080/60p as well. But besides the Blackmagic, none of them will be terribly easy to match IMO.

I normally use the Panasonic 12-35, or attach a Speedbooster and use the Sigma 18-35, Rokinon 50 & 85mm.

Thanks. I prefer the image of the Sigma but the 12-35 is outstanding in my opinion. Especially b/c of the image stabilization. If you're going handheld it's a great tool to have. Locked off or tracking shots I usually use the Sigma.

    Great work Aaron!
Thanks to your suggestions I started to use V-Log and I'm having fun! I still not use it for client' shot because I'm still testing it, but for my personal things I had very good results outdoor.

Which lenses do you normally use with GH4?

I shot a video for an artist called Vesperteen (check them out on Apple Music, or here). Shot 75% in V Log 10 bit, and 25% with C100. Check out some of the V Log stills below. Haven't worked on a final grade yet. These are just Cineon to Film Contrast LUTs applied.

Just installed V-LOG L. Will give it a spin!
Looks a lot noisier on the screen than S-LOG 2 on the A7S II even at ISO 400. What ISO do you guys recommend for it?

I haven't run into much noise yet. However I haven't had a low light situation really. I suppose if the noise was bad I'd use Neat Video. It seems to work well on other cameras.

Using a monitor with LUT capabilities is a huge help. Its much easier to focus, see color, and expose properly. My go-to LUT now is the Impulz Cineon to Film Contrast 1.

I was very excited about V-Log, because GH4 is a great camera (the one I use most of the time), but really needed a flat profile such as the BMPCC.
But, for my experience it is very difficult to obtain great results inside a room with lights or in natural light: I had a lot of noise. Way too much for my taste.
Outside it's slightly better, but I had some difficulties focusing.

In my opinion it is something not comparable to the amazing BMPCC's ProRes flat file, but I would be more then happy if you have suggestions that could change my opinion. I love BMPCC files, but I really don't like the working process on it, so I end using always GH4.

I cannot afford an external recorder in this moment (I just bought a 3 axis gimbal), so probably I cannot have great results because I record on the SD card.

Wich LUT do you use for V-LogL?
    Thank you very much Aaron

I'm surprised at the lack of V Log enthusiasm on EOSHD considering the amount of GH4 users. I'm blown away every day by how great it looks via 10 bit Pro Res. Maybe the A7SII release has something to do with the deterred attention.
