  1. Interesting points in the article about the D600. Can't beat a D600 for dynamic range at that price point (up there with the best at any price point). Now if Nikon would only modernize the video on the D600 series... I'll have to have a look at the Nikon 14mm F2.8 lens. I don't see it on their website, though. Michael
  2. Based on Andrew's recent test, I don't think you will be seeing 15 stops...maybe 13? The A7S looks it could be a nice camera, but right now way over hyped. Michael
  3. Another good clip, although I am seeing some judder and aliasing in a few place (perhaps during the downconversion there is some line skipping?). Regardless, it's clear 10 bit 4:2:2 really bumps up the quality. Michael
  4. That is ridiculous (in a good way). :) Wow! It's like a whole different camera! Color, dynamic range, the entire look is better, and it was good before. If you get any more examples, please post them. Michael
  5. You're always going to get naysayers. Everyone has their own priorities, and brand preferences. It really sounds like they just don't like Super Zooms in general. Michael
  6. Nice review! Good to hear more realistic performance out of the A7s, rather than the hyped stuff we've heard so far from Sony. Michael
  7. It looks like Panasonic is on a 4K roll, and they are starting to make the other company's camaras look dated, not only with 4K, but other features such as zebras, focus peaking, and cine gamma.. I'm seeing more and more 4K TVs are showing up in stores, and the prices are plummeting. 8K TVs are in development. It's enough to give pause about shooting in 1080, because in 10 years it may look pretty awful. Michael
  8. That sounds like a bit of a stretch, even for this camera. Nice video, BTW. Michael
  9. I just looked at that video, and I have no idea what you are talking about. The reviewer said, "If I really had to compare it (the D4S) to the GH4, I would have to say they are so close, as to be basically equal." Michael
  10. Great review of GH4! This camera is on its way to becoming "Camera of the Year". From the footage I have seen so far, there will be some challenge to getting the "filmic" look. Just shooting straight out of the box doesn't appear to get the look many filmmakers are looking for. Some people have succeeded, and since, the camera just came out, it will take experimentation with settings and lighting to get the look people are trying to achieve. It's good news that it grades fairly well, too. No doubt, that the GH4 is a powerhouse in a small package. Michael
  11. Great tips on how to work efficiently. I like this! Thanks. Michael
  12. I don't know much about Macs, but I would be looking at what percent of resources are being used, especially RAM (if you can get it to run that long). 8GB doesn't sound like a lot of RAM to me to be editing 4K videos. Michael
  13. Great work by Kendy! I see that many of his shots have bokeh, so the equipment does matter to some extent. It would be interesting to see what he could do creatively with a small sensor camcorder. I read that he does not use lighting, only ambient. If the scene is dark, he says it adds to the mood, and that lighting would only make it look "fake". He uses no tripod or Steadycam. He doesn't use external audio gear, just "in camera" with a Rode mic. He uses After Effects to edit and grade, and he does it himself. He created his own camera picture style, which he sells on his website for 9 Euros. He has no crew. He has no budget. He is self taught, and only starting filming a few years ago. If this doesn't prove that you can create great things with minimal gear, and no budget, I don't know what will. It's very inspirational. Michael
  14. You mean it has about the same resolution as a regular 1080p camera would, which never has a full 1080 resolution. :) It looks pretty sharp. You guys are already getting spoiled. :P Michael
  15. Found this on the audio "buzz" with example of noise. http://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-gh4-audio-background-noise-test/ Article says Panasonic is working on the issue. Michael
  16. Great comparison test! I was surprised how well the GH4 did. The clarity is incredible. The image wasn't as flat, but in some cases I think it actually added to the aesthetic, especially the building scenes. I would love to see a test with the two cameras (and the GH4 with other cameras) "out of the box" - no speed boosters, no firmware hacks, etc. Michael
  17. I would check the harddisk specs on your laptop. Many of them only have 5400 rpm drives. The better ones have drives that run at 7200 rpm, the same a what you would find in a desktop computer. They are easy and cheap to replace. For workstation style laptops with NVidia Quadro chips, you are into about $1700 (at least with the HP models). Michael
  18. I'm no colorist, but that frame grab looks really nice as is. I am also impressed with the amount of detail. You can see the strands of her hair, and if you zoom in, the pattern in her vest. There is a little bit of noise, but no much. Your music video looks great, It's nice to see what can be done with a GH4 in the right hands. Michael
  19. This is really well done. Michael
  20. I think you guys are right. The image lost all its filmic look on the BMPCC. Also I was looking at the bricks looking for moire', but it was the Palm tree that looked like a neon sign with the BMPCC. Michael
  21. The sharpness of the GH4 is ridiculous (in a good way). You know when you look at old video, and it has a blurriness to it? I think that's what HD is going to look like in a few years compared to UHD. Even 4K down sampled to 1080p is a lot sharper. The 1080p cameras never put out a full 1080 in image detail, while 4K down to 1080 does. Michael
  22. I am aware of that Sony manufactures the sensor for Nikon, but I don't know of that sensor being used in any Sony cameras. There are a lot of Nikon electronics and processing going on between the sensor and the finished file, too. In still image tests, the Nikon's still outperform the Sony's by a pretty good margin. Michael
  23. No problem. I missed the first thread, and your description is more thorough. Thanks for posting. Michael
