Christina Ava reacted to Andrew Reid in How to cure banding in DSLR footage (and GH4 4K holds the key...)
The EOSHD Panasonic GH4 Shooter’s Guide is now available

8bit DSLR codecs get quite a lot of bashing for banding, and it is something we're well used too... A sky or a wall taking up half the shot with only 4 or 5 shades where there should be a silky smooth gradient with thousands of tiny steps in-between darker and slightly lighter areas of the image.

However one of the first things I noticed with the Panasonic GH4 was that banding was greatly reduced and it looked like my 10bit Blackmagic footage, even though it was still an 8bit codec (internally with 4K). Why such a turn-around for an 8bit codec? It turns out the 4K mode on the GH4 holds the key to hiding this banding... yet it is something we can apply to all DSLRS...

    Here's how...

Having it sitting for a long time, I said to finally give it a try, as until now it was impossible to get any info about it, or even so to find a video made with this rare beast.
Quick test of the Moller Anamorphot 30/2x, on an Oly E-M1.
I have to admit that wasn't that easy to work with it, it's big like an Iscorama, not easy to use just an anamorphic clamp and I always prefer smaller anamorphics to play with, so I don't have the proper rig solution for this Moller. But the image quality that comes out of it, puts it (at least) beside Iscorama.
Any comment is welcome, this lens is a miracle:

Honoring My Father is the story behind Keith Kadoyama attending the Lantern Floating Ceremony every year. The Lantern Floating Ceremony honors our loved ones who have passed away. Keith honors his father Mitsuo Kadoyama, and he tells his story. Thanks to my good friend Keith for doing this.  I conceived of the idea when I saw the announcement just 2 days before, and I'm glad he was up for the challenge.  I shot all of this myself, so it was a lot of hard work!

Christina Ava reacted to Andrew Reid in $60 Pentax that's actually a $800 Zeiss with optics by designer of Stanley Kubrick's NASA glass

The Contax Zeiss Distagon 'Hollywood' 28mm F2.0 is a classic fast wide for full frame and is incredible on Super 35mm as well. Wide open it's one of the sharpest F2.0 wide angle lenses available and it has very little distortion.

The Contax Zeiss version fetches $800 on eBay but there's a $60 wolf in sheep's clothing called the Pentax PK 28mm F2.0 which has a fascinating story behind it.

if you are starting out get a set of 4 Red Heads and a bunch of LEE gels / diffusion for them , and bulldog clips to hold the gels on the lights.
you will also need some Lee diffusion too so you can control the intensity of the lights better dont be affraid of layering up your diffusion too , then adding the coloured gels ontop of the diffusion.

You can buy gels / Lee diffusion off ebay cheap get a whole bunch of colours and try different set ups to see what you like.
ie try Teal and Amber that is used  in alot of films now , amber on the face - teal on the back wall etc or vice versa !

I always back light and have a kicker too to help get edge separation.
How much key and fill you use from the front is all down to personal taste and how dark or bight you want the subject.

there are loads of youtube vids on this and 3 point and 4 point lighting

you will end up having lights around until you are happy with the look
so dont think you can just bash up some lights and hey presto ! you use your eye to get a desirable look.

Erm that is kind of how art works isn't it? Appropriation, borrowing ideas, images and sounds from others, mixing stuff together to create something new.

Also I don't think that 'lifting crap work on the free or cheap' is really the idea most filmmakers on Vimeo have in mind when they mix their cinematography sensitively and thoughtfully with a piece of music that inspired the shots in the first place.

Good job The Beatles didn't have to pay licensing fees to the musicians who influenced their sound... they'd have never have made it out the door.

Saying record companies lose money due to Vimeo airtime is as crazy as saying they lose sales through radio play and extensive advertising.

You guy did not understand at all. I 100% agree with Andrew, and this is a disaster.
Now let me tell you why :

1 - your exemple and comparison is wrong. Because in one case you use audio format (a music) to use it on a different industry : make a personnal video. So it is not copying the music to do the same music, but something else. SO you can't compare with video saying that it would be the same for exemple to copy my video and using it in another video (because you stay on the same support, same industry : video).

2 - Come on man ? If you think 2 seconds about it : first of all I buy the music that I put in my video so the artist should be happy I bought it, secondly puting it in my video is an advertisement for him (see under videos how many comments what is this song blablabla) so it benefits DOUBLE for the artist. If tomorrow you copy my video and use it as a rush in your video, it doesn't give me money (cause you did not pay my video) and it does not make any add for me because people will think this is 100% your video.

The rule should be to pay the track, and give credit to artist in the description, that's all. But when I say pay the track I mean pay the normal one, and not 10 000 USD to have to rights on it. I mean, if you do a commercial and make profit with your video it is normal that you have to pay more, but for creative work, is that not enough to pay the song and credit the artist ? Come on.....

The digital world is becoming less and less free, just like the real world. FUCK Vimeo if they do that seriously.

stop the presses, before you grade read these two funny articles, theres a distinction to color correction and color grading.

Color correction is all those subtle little corrections in your movie, correcting the exposure etc, grading is changing the complete look and feel of your film all mentioned in the excellent book by mr Hurken "Color Correction Handbook - Professional techniques for video and cinema"

I love these articles because they point out a simple thing, today its movies that are not "graded" that stand out from the crowd.
