anchoricex got a reaction from zetty in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
For those of you who dealt with the GH4 preorder:
I want this camera, have the money for it but don't want to preorder yet (would like to get a new CC and get a min-purchase bonus if I'm going to do this). How long are cameras out of stock for when these things first unroll? If it's anything like a freaking iPhone release then I'll probably just suck it up and preorder now but I'm also weary of being a first adopter, I'd like to see how the camera fares first. Just don't want to be stuck months without a camera when the time comes.
Also going back to my CC bonus minimum purchase thing: I'm assuming B&H doesn't charge your card until the preorders become real orders?

anchoricex got a reaction from Flynn in Olympus E-M5 Mark II - love and hate at first sight
People should take a look at this. This footage looks gorgeous, I only saw a couple strange jitters when the camera was suction mounted to the car, might've given the camera body too much vibration for the 5 axis stabilization to handle. Overall though, this was done with a BM Video assist, occasional bounce light and the Oly 12mm and the Oly 9-18mm. That is fucking GOOD LOOKING STUFF for what is used here. Olympus is unmatched with stabilization, this is all handheld and it looks outstanding. Still 8 bit but hard not to be impressed. The narrative and song are not my cup of tea at all, but the imagery is great.

No clue.
Something to note, that reflective screen likely sucks balls outside.

anchoricex got a reaction from Xavier Plagaro Mussard in Sony FE Sonnar 55mm f1.8
Asked over on DPReview and apparently at infinity focus the FOV is significantly wider. This does not bode well with me, does this bother anyone shooting with this lens? Curious on other filmmakers input, most of the folks over on DPR are photographers. I know it's not a manual focus lens but I've seen it used in quite a few "test" videos so I can't help but wonder if people still find it a suitable tool for their shoots.

anchoricex got a reaction from Axel in You Don't Need A New Camera
Kendy Ty is an excellent example of shooting on a 200-300 dollar camera with a 200-300 dollar lens and getting the job done well. He is clearly focused on the end result and does what he needs to do to get there using the few tools he has, akin to a sketch artist using nothing but a pencil or ballpoint pen. It's been covered many times on this site that chasing equipment will often hinder your ability to focus on the art of it all, and Andrew has quite a handful of blog posts that touch on the humility of this all. With that said, it's still exciting and important to embrace and use new tech when available, I see nothing wrong with it so as long as everyone stresses the importance of actually shooting and making things.

Probably a stupid question... but how bad does 1080p stuff look on a 4k monitor? I'd like to get a 4k monitor to really view 4k content, but I anticipate doing a lot of 1080p work indefinitely still, and 4k here and there.

anchoricex got a reaction from Geoff CB in KineMAX review part 1 - adventures in 6K raw and 110fps slow-mo
Holy shit this is the most deliver I've ever seen come in a camera package. And for that price point. Oh my god. It's like it was born out of what people want out of a video camera.

anchoricex got a reaction from Liam in Firmware update for A7II offers improved image stabilization (also support for FE lenses on A7 S / R & A6000)
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=ILCE7M2&upd_id=10327&os_group_id=3
When Andrew reviewed the a7ii we were all on the same page about the IBIS being really underwhelming because it introduced a really uncanny microjitter that seemed to tilt and lightly stretch the image towards you and away from you, just saw this update. Anyone with the A7ii wanna install it and give it a go for us? Or maybe Andrew could revisit it?
Curious if Sony even noticed the IBIS wasn't very well received for filmmakers. If they addressed this that would mean they're listening, which would be rad.

anchoricex got a reaction from leeys in Why so much slomo shooting
I felt compelled to reply to this topic. I've been on many sides of the fence on this issue, I've been the guy who, when the fs700 was released, absolutely had to have 120fps for camera work. I was so enamored by the possibilities that I could implement with slow motion, then I actually used it and realized it wasn't too special and I probably overdid it (https://vimeo.com/109775095) but can definitely add value here and there SO AS LONG as you keep the idea/feeling you want to portray in mind.
THEN I became the super jaded guy who was getting irritated with test videos all using slow motion, and tons of videos being uploaded in Vimeo all implementing their respective cameras slow motion. I would say things like "slow mo is cliche" or "slow mo is played out" and basically felt like it wasn't all that special anymore since everyones iPhone could do slow mo.
THEN I realized I was merely projecting my insecurities on others. And just like that I didn't care anymore. It no longer matters to me if people are using slow mo, lifting the shit out of their blacks, the important thing is they're trying to make things. If it's slow mo that captivates someone into doing something creative, so be it. I like that. I like seeing people with cameras, trying to explore a side of themselves that pretty much all modern societies try to surpress. Is it overdone ? Absolutely. Does it *actually* affect me, and my ability to deliver ideas? No, the only thing that could ever affect that is myself.
Overall it's a tool, and I think it's important that ALL camera manufacturers, at this point, include at least 120fps to be there when people need it.

anchoricex got a reaction from Ratguity in GH3 laggy live view ?
Just got my GH3. I noticed when I have my Panasonic 7-14mm on and I'm looking at the live view from the OLED touch-screen, it's kind of laggy depending on where I'm pointing the camera. For what ever reason when it's pointed at most places in my room the feed is really choppy, but when I point it at my window it feels like I'm watching a 60fps movie. Is this normal ?

anchoricex got a reaction from J.P in On trying to understand Canon and Blackmagic's strategy on cameras...
Enjoyed a lot of your points, especially the one noting that it's ludicrous that these companies are using stupid simple 3$ features like headphone jacks to swing us around by the necks and "protect their higher models". It's pathetic, more competition needs to enter this industry and actually sell devices that are in line with what is technologically feasible at the moment. If someone came in and tried to do what BlackMagic was doing but actually thought out their production flow and business model, Canon/Nikon/Panny/Sony/Olympus/Red/etc would be forced to compete or be crushed. BlackMagic has an opportunity to exploit a VERY vulnerable exploit in this market...yet they choose to remain so small that they cannot sustain the demand for their product. Seriously, they could be industry leaders. It's suicide, because it's only a matter of time before someone else comes in and does what they're doing and does it better.

You make promises like this, you anticipate the demand for the product based on the last BMCC sales, you build your company to that scale. If they don't have a PR team that is their fault, they have the money and the sales to sustain that kind of growth and they have yet to do so. You don't seem to understand that this is how companies fail. This is also the internet age, where you can get a HUGE feel for the demand of the product by simply surfing forums for christ sake. You do not remain small as a company and throw out promises that would require a business of a much larger scale to accomplish. It is perfectly justifiable to get angry at this, it is nothing short of shitty business practice. It is entirely their fault that they set deadlines (deathlines), and unfortunately for them their product has shown the demand for these kinds of cameras at this price. If they continue to produce at such a slow pathetic rate, they are only extending the window for a new company to come in and exploit the market and do it with consumer-demand in mind. They can either:
A.) Remain small and stop promising huge productions and ridiculous deadlines
or
B.) Restructure and expand their company to sustain the demand for this product
or
C.) Burn to the ground & watch someone else come along and do it better.
I was unaware that being the moderator and owner of a forum puts you on a pedestal where your rights to argue in discussions are no longer allowed. You seem to be holding him to some sort of robotic standard.

anchoricex got a reaction from andy lee in Panasonic G6 Review - the GH2 Redux
Thinking of leaving my 5dmkiii for this. The raw stuff magic lantern is putting out is awesome but I don't think it's quite for me (I'm having a hard time grasping all of the confusing information out there). Someone tell me this is the right thing to do.
I shoot comfortably with one prime and one wide currently and am able to get just about every shot I want.
Sigma 50mm f1.4
and
Canon 16-35mm II F2.8L
For whatever reason these are the only two focal lengths I need when I film. I seem to be able to accomplish just about everything I want with them. Will I be able to achieve similar focal lengths on the g6 with say,
the panny 7-14mm
and
some 24 or 25mm ? Voigtlander maybe?
I love 60fps and want to utilize it more in my films. 720p actually doesn't look too bad with sharpening on the 5dmkiii, but this g6 is telling me I can get more for my money.
