i'm shooting on super 16mm which I love and is really beautiful and unique ( which I recommend everyone to try to incorporate in their work flow and shooting assignments for fun or professionally)
my digital experience professionally is working with cameras like alexa..and I think people will even be selling their high end cameras with this new development at ML

i'm shooting a feature on kodak 7203 super 16mm (really gorgeous) but when the sun goes down I take out the 5d3

there's something about shooting on 35mm film...maybe start with that...it will be beautiful and timeless..
( free camera from rental place or cheap 35mm cam from ebay with 35mm film short ends will keep the budget very low but the image very high)

Many modern film photographers are portrait and wedding photographers in their 20s and 30s who are looking to “differentiate their art and their work by shooting film,” Almeida tells TIME. “That usually allows them to charge for a premium product because film has a different look and feel than digital.”
same goes for me as a filmmaker

for me...graduating and working in LA...film is a key element to the art of cinema...( and cheaper)...buy the camera..shoot 16mm..35mm short ends.. it does give you an edge in the digital world for jobs and your career
but test and see for yourself..

Lulz! When I posted the first vid of Magic Lantern raw (it could only record 2 seconds at that point) the "cynical assholes" said it would never work. A few days later I posted a 1 minute ML raw vid. Soon after that ML cracked the 4Gb file size limit. To this day some cynical assholes are still saying it doesn't work (unreliable). Bullshit!
I've never been a Red fanboy. I had access to a Red One at film school, but I shot everything with my 5D MK2, and I've been filming with DSLRs ever since. The BMMCC is my first 'digital cinema camera'. The 5D MK3 with Magic Lantern is still the camera I film with, it's quite erm magical . A friend offered to shoot my film with his Dragon but I said no thanks. The whole Red attitude thing turned me off them. Working with a small dedicated crew of hackers who are way ahead of the game is more my style.
for purely artistic beauty film is my primary medium..for low light 5d with ml..those guys and girls have integrity (it's not about vimeo or specs but feelings)

On a serious note. The reason why selfies are constantly looked at by other people is not because of all these tactics or formulas for a Hollywood shot. They are constantly looked at because of well the girl is hot... I mean one of the issues with going overbudget with people is that they try too hard to get the most hollywood forumla shot possible... But it is much better to just film the person than to try to formulate this huge ginormous shot. You have 30 seconds to film a bird before it flies away, what are you going to do?
A: Dolly push in with crane shot on a Panavision
or
B: Pull out your phone and film it.
If you pick B it is right, because you would lose everything if you picked A.
I would pick A ...and find another bird...(Panavision dolly in on a crane...I have a budget!!!)

Cameras do matter. Deakins fought for the alexa on hail ceasar and the cohens insisted kodak film. Have you seen hail caesar? It looks amazing. The camera is as important as the lighting lenses color etc. A lot of top dps say the camera doesnt matter but of course it does or they would not be risking it all to shoot on film when digital is so much safer for a production. How it renders motion and sharpness and smoothness. The camera is really important. Everything is important.
And yes deakins could say he would shoot on an iphone because that's baller to say. But how many top DPs have "slummed" it on shoots with less-than-good cameras for major feature work? Pretty much no one except Rodrigo Prieto who likes the Sony F55 for night exteriors. Pretty much every other DP I can think of only shoots Alexa or Red.
...actually film is the safest choice also...( with the empty palette of alexa you really need the $$$$ for coloring)

I think its a bit of a generation thing.
A guy I have working with me is 10 years younger than me (im 33).
Both me and him are movie fans, we both saw H8 in 70mm.
Both of us use analog film for our stills. I use medium format and he shoots large format and is getting into wet prints.
We share similar tastes in other vintage stuff, we like the same movies, video games, etc.But we differ on one subject. He loves the look of Loord of the rings, CGI, 48fps, sharp sharp images etc.
I like practical effects, film, 24p etc.
And when we argue about it, its clear to me that we simply don't see the same thing. When I point at the bear in the new dicaprio movie and say "look how fake" he just scratches his head. He has no idea what Im on about.
When I used Jurassic Park as an example of practical vs cgi, he thinks they look equally good.
He is simply used to it. That's what movies have looked like all his life. He doesn't remember the pre digital era.
Another example is dubbing. When Im in Germany I think, "how can they watch this, I mean its so badly done its comical?".
Then I ask a german friend, "What do you mean, its in perfect synk and the voice matches spot on, no one could ever tell the difference".
They are used to it.Ok, totally off topic from the Weapon. But a thought
On topic,
It looked stellar but Im not blown away. URSA 4.6k, Dragon, Weapon, Tomato, Tomaato.I'm about ten years younger than you...yet I see exactly what you see...arri sr 2 (perfect cam)

this is the perspective in L.A. from D.P.S to a Producer...and from Colorists..
from Colorists"you save a lot of money with film because it's good right out of the can while a digital job can take months to correct.."
from D.P.S in general what they spoke about...THEY ALL WANT TO WORK WITH FILM (EVEN SUPER 16MM)
For artistic reasons and the beauty of the image...
they also like their vision protected ..and film does that for them..(not so many people looking at monitors..post etc..)from the Producers...(again in general what they said) Film is cheaper for them then renting a high end digital camera (most film cameras are super cheap)...and not having to spend time with colorists...(which I know because that's where I was working)
when you look at a can of film you are also looking at your archival material and coloring...that saves a lot $$$whatever you do in your production test first and weigh the costs and the art..and then choose..

Hey Hans!
the camera in the picture above is my arri sr2...bought for a very low price it's a dream to use..one of the reasons I really like this camera is because it gives me the CHOICE...digital or film...and really this camera is THE ALEXA HACK. CAMERA..
shooting on an ALEXA with the post is extremely expensive ..with super 16mm I'm getting a magical image for very little money.
Happy Holidays!!
