  1. I think so, because I used a SMALL HD monitor. The cropmarks were completely screwed up, but i just disabled the liveview overlays and put some masking tape on the smallhd and it was good to go

does your camera have the latest firmware installed…that's how you know if you're using the latest hack ...

  2. Hi, just wanted to share this with you guys in case you were interested. I did a paid gig for a band and used a mark ii and mark iii with RAW during the entire shoot because our EPIC was acting up.

I was extremely pleased with what came out of the camera. See for yourself:

For gear, we used the mark ii for the "science" stuff, because the moire and alialising wouldn't be a problem in those scenes. The 60's living room and greenhouse were shot with the mark iii.

For light we had 3 kineflows for the science stuff and used an M18 and M8 HMI light for the other stuff.

Lenses were the great Samyang 35 & 85 and a Canon 50 1.2 for the in between shots. I didn't have trouble getting the width I needed because of the full frame factor.

Fun fact: all the space scenes were filmed oldschool Douglas Trumbull style using glass, liquids and GLITTER.

    Hope you enjoy it.

I'm definitely shooting ML RAW again, we had absolutely zero problems.

where you using the latest raw hack..with hdmi out…?

    >NEW: The EOSHD Music Challenge - pick tracks from up and coming singers and bands to suit the mood of my cinematography pieces and future camera tests!

In my opinion the Canon 7D is currently the best budget solution for shooting raw video. There's plenty of used 7D bodies here on eBay for around $750 - and that is practically a steal for 14bit raw video from a Super 35mm sized sensor... Stills camera is a mere bonus!

So to the big question - does the Mosaic Engineering VAF-7D filter completely cure the 7D's raw video of moire and aliasing?

not very polite there…  nice write up and footage..I like this camera and the 5d…

Interesting to see how these lists compare a year later. Resolution isn't everything- I would put the Alexa on top for overall image quality. They designed their sensor after learning from years of experience building film scanners.

We used to argue about whether digital effects for audio would ever match or surpass analog gear. Finally a few years ago, even the most stalwart musician friend finally agreed digital matched analog with the Axe Fx: http://www.fractalaudio.com

I just watched MiB II again and was blown away with some of the shots in terms of skin tone and color (Eastman EXR 100T 5248). Is it possible to convert my 5D3 (RAW) or FS700 (RAW) to look like that with something like FilmConvert (two cameras I use)? No, not yet, as I don't think anyone has accurately modeled the film process well enough yet to emulate what film does with light. Initial ADCs and DACs sounded harsh and brittle when CD's were first released (folks still dig records and tapes). Now digital audio is fantastic (and most folks listen to highly compressed audio on iPod/Phone/Droid or cheap computer speakers!).

Digital cameras are still very much like early digital audio. Matching the pleasing look of film has not yet been achieved with digital; so far ARRI has gotten the closest, and FilmConvert has made a good start. Accurately modeling and simulating film with digital cameras will happen someday. Why bother? Because it looks better, especially for narrative (where unreality and dreaminess are helpful in storytelling). Dynamic range, resolution, lack of aliasing, and accurate color processing are all very important. The last piece of the puzzle is (optionally) being able to get highlights and skin tones etc. to look like film.

from my own personal experience(advertising) working with kodak film…alexa…dragon…5dm3raw

nothing compares to the quality of kodak film…(excellent skin  tones ..highlights..etc..and no worries for deliverables to client..35mm and super 16mm saves on post)

    arri alexa next..

  5. I would like to see a "Top Dog" page on this web site. It is hard to keep track of what is the best buy out there. Last year the 5D3 with ML was pronounced to be Top Dog by Andrew. Then there was a list (that I cannot find again) showing the best cameras ranked in 3 or 4 different catagories. A permenant Top Dog page would be a nice addition and probably an attraction to this web site.

    i still want the 1dc (if discounted)..vs gh4

  6. What does chocolate taste like? Sweet? What does sweet taste like?(not trying to sound rude) You know it when you taste it.

I would say that filmic, which is a term I use a lot when talking about video is:

Has A Surreal feel to it, dream like, definitely not in the present, different from real life

Unlike the immediate presence of being "live" whether being live in person or on something like television or video.

  7. I haven't tried it, but probably not. But if your main use of 4K is to slightly re-frame your shot and deliver in 1080P, I think that it's fine for that.

Also, using the 5D with anamorphic lenses can offer pretty high resolutions. Using the 1600x1200 crop mode with a 2x lens can give you a 3200x1200 image, in raw.

I'm not saying that the 5Diii is going to be better for everyone. I think that the GH4 will probably be a really nice camera. But even before production models start rolling out, we already know that it can't match the 5D's 1080P codec. So, if you're mostly interested in really good-looking 1080P, I think that the 5D with Magic Lantern remains a strong contender.

with faster cf cards will 4k or something like 2.8k be possible too without using crop mode?

    thanks

  8. I also have a 5Diii running ML. I'm not going to buy the GH4 because I don't need 4K, and with my 5D I'm getting a full-frame sensor and a better codec without the added bulk and cost of an external recorder. Plus, I get NIGHTLY firmware updates from Magic Lantern. I just downloaded last night's and it's hard to believe all the bells and whistles that have been added in just the past week.

In terms of shooting with raw, I use it for the option of matching white balance between shots and tweaking exposure. Then I export them out to 12-bit ProRes 4444 files, and edit and grade as usual.

I don't bother with the KomputerBay cards. To me, the piece of mind that I get from the Lexar 1000x cards is worth the extra cost.

If you are really keen on 4K, then maybe the GH4 is the camera for you. But otherwise, the 5Diii delivers some of the best 1080P I've seen, and you already own one!

do you think with the 5d3raw you can up the resolution  to 4k…?

  9. PS. To touch another slightly OT topic a bit;

Most of the usual suspects are going through some tough times and rearranging of their business models. A half of the imaging dept. of Panasonic has been sold to an Israeli spook/imager company, Sony is about to sell their computer/IT business to concentrate more on sensors, cameras and cellphones. Apparently even the few remaining traditional camera companies are also redefining their core businesses behind the scenes. Their old brand inertia won't roll them forward forever, so they'll have to come up with something new soon, or crumble away.

It may all mean both good and bad for us. Good in sense that the manufacturers may have to give more focus and better products to us, the enthusiast and pro market, as the mainstream market is saturated, commodified and smartphone-ified, and the high end pro market alone is simply too small for the industry giants.  Bad in the sense that some players may exit the stage at some point, or some good product lines may end up being cancelled, if/when the big companies go to the usual panic/risk avoiding mode. But we'll see.

Perhaps the GH4 is one of the first samples of mostly the good impact of the changes, rather than the bad.

this is why i still try to shoot on film (and have kept my cameras)

  10. The "standard of videoing" is about a lot more then the number of pixels... What it does is allow access to higher resolution capture at a lower price point than before.

I'm in the "perfect 1080p" camp more than the "4K" camp, I'd like a small camera with 1080p ProeRes 444 like the Alexa. but the 4K number will sell this body to a lot of people I'm sure, regardless.

What this means (unfortunately) is that Canon will doubtlessly release a cheaper 4K body soon, but still with 4:2:0 8-bit recording. Seeing 4:2:0 8-bit in specs has now gone beyond annoying and started to become just... boring... :(

canon might answer by just discounting the 1dc??

  11. Kind of a personal question, but if it were me, in a commercial with a small crew I'd avoid risks. Is it for broadcast or for web delivery?

BM4K sure will be a nice camera for an affordable price and is due sometime in the near future but... when? Will enough SSDs have been tested to be sure you're not going to run into unexpected behaviors?

Same could be said about 5D Mark III RAW. Much as I love what ML is doing, it is still alpha or beta stage... not reliable enough for paid work IMHO.

Red One MX, despite it's disadvantages, has been around for a while and a good DP will make the most out of it. Same with Scarlett though I've heard of some people having trouble with it (reliability).

Is RAW that big a deal? If not, there are other options. Sony F55 is around the price of the MX, C500 (or C300 for quite a lot less).

Definitely BMC4K is expected to be the best bang for the buck... when it's released... and tested.

this commercial will be in movie theaters…(doesn't have to be raw)…but I was thinking the most affordable would be the 5d raw or red mx..??

  12. More updated rumours from 43rumors.com

    - G4K has focus peaking
    - There is an attachable XLR adapter
    - H264 codec all intra that give 422 color all intra in 100 mbps. To record this you will need to buy the new P2 Micro card in SD shape made by Panasonic (see image on top)
    - it will be switch-able from 4K and 1080P with various frame rates (can shoot 120fps at 1080P for example)

  13.

While I have far to little knowledge to comment on leagues II to V, I would definitivly choose an other order for league I. The RED Monochrome is a pure b/w camera so it maybe shouldn't be on the list.

My downgrade of the ARRI Alexa cameras isn't because I think that ARRI makes inferiour cameras. But both the Sony F65 and F55 as well as the RED Dragon have new generation sensors, so it's not surpising that they surpase the Alexas. I don't think that the RED Dragon much surpases the F65, but it's way smaller and cheaper.

The Canon 1D C is not a professional camera, especially given the terrible compression.

    League 1

    1. Red Dragon
    2. Sony F65
    3. Sony F55
    4. Alexa Studio
    5. Alexa / Amira
    6. Canon C500 (4K with external recorder)
    7. Sony F5
    8. Red MX
    9. Canon 1D C (4K internal – lightly graded only)

working with  footage from red dragon…too early to tell on this camera ..specs are good but have to use it more  to judge…Alexa right now deserves the top spot in digital..compression on 1dc isn't a bad thing…

  14. Odie,

Tell us which one it is or I will call party-foul.

yes it's the dragon…but philosophically speaking and aesthetic wise…do we really care…??

but you're choice of gh3 (and maxotics) really makes a another good point..if you're not going to use the dr in a camera why not just use the gh3 or 5d and save a ton of money..(i think the dr on this camera will be used on special effects movies with big budgets but otherwise??)
