Burned? Not sure about that mate. NX1 owners are a very satisfied bunch. I should know, I am one. And the 16-50mm F2 is the best S35 zoom I own.

Would do it all again in a heartbeat if they brought out another camera.

I’m sure about it, that is precisely what they did. They, Samsung, kept vehemently dening the shut down of the camera line, in fact, making it a circus of rumors that led those into a dead end camera. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great camera, but it’s still a dead end, especially if you bought into their eco system of lenses. Basically, they never admitted to it, so that they could dump their existing stock on hand. If that isn’t a burn, then it’s clearly, at the very least, deception.

However for me it's nice to have on even the most photography focused body... Even if you'd be crazy to pick an M for video over a SL or GH5... It is the convergence of stills and video that is the future for me, more than the segmentation of tools into pro stills cameras and pro video cameras.

I agree on the stills and video convergence, just look at Vincent Laforet's recent post on the RED 8K Weapon, pulling a 36mp RAW photo from that video is incredible! Tradiionalist, can call it whatever they like, machine-gunning photography, whatever, but it's all headed that direction.

  3. Hello,

I knew Andrew would not be writing a guide for this camera, so, I did! If this shameless plug is completely uncool, then by all means delete it. I'm just trying to get some traction on this ebook that took a lot of time and effort to write!

The guide is pretty much driven to the photographer that owns the X Pro 2, and is wanting to learn about the video side of the camera. Yes, I know this is primarily a video shooters website, but photographers hangout here as well! Even for those video shooter that have this camera, it's pretty comprehensive, so there's something in it for everyone! Thank you!

I think that line worries me. And even worse in 1080p. I could live with the lower resolution for things needing fast movement if rolling shutter is well behaved.
Although I don't see any problems where I would expect them in the video linked.
We need proper out of camera 4k and HD samples.

And this guy to give a number on rolling shutter:http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303559-Measuring-rolling-shutter-put-a-number-on-this-issue!

I don't know about you, but I've seen nothing from the X-T2 that really impresses me at all. That's not to say it's a bad camera, but in my opinion, from what I've seen, my Fuji Xpro2 has a better video image! And for those that own the Xpro2, I've talked with Fujifilm N.J., and they told me the crushed black level video recording is a known issue that has been passed along to Japan, whether they will firmware fix that is anyone's guess. If any of you are interested in having the Xpro2's highllight tone, shadow tone, color, sharpness, noise reduction, grain effect, enabled to the video capture, they told me sending an email to the Fujifilm HQ's Japan helps a lot in possibly getting that released. You can send that email from the Fujifilm global website!

Hi guys first post around here, im mostly a video guy but love to take stills. the thing is being a Fuji "fan" and owning a XE2 and 4 fuji x lenses i really wanted this camera to be great. and on paper it sure looks like it, but after watching the footage around the internet i must say im disappointed.

That video in japan: the forest lacks detail (looks mushy) and the blown-out highlights are ugly. i downloaded the Flog file from vimeo but as some people say it doesnt look good at all. Other samples seem to have a lot of compression artifacts. and overall micro-detail mushyness. the only images that look ok are the byw. and i mean ok, not great.

I really hope it has something to do with pre-production samples, underdeveloped firmware, or just still guys doing video. I still havent lost my hopes but if "this is it" im probably going for a A7sII. what do you guys think? thanks!

    Dave.

Yeah, I kinda agree, I haven't seen anything impressive at all, in fact, it amazes me Fuji never put this camera into the hands of a DP to produce something that kicked ass! Maybe this camera has no kick ass, although it is still in beta. Below is a frame grab from a recent shoot with my Fuji XPro2, and in my opinion I haven't seen an image from the X-T2 that touches that image! And yes, that's SOOC.

DP Review posted some footage shot with a couple of the film simulations and it looked very videoy to me. Maybe it's because I had just watched a video where Matias included some 16mm footage he shot or recently watched this interview with Ed Lachman but you know, in my mind film just blows away anything, especially at the lower end. Anyway, not particularly impressed with the video out of this camera. It's not that it looks bad, but none of the cameras at this level look particularly good.

After all, it IS video! But, I know what you mean. Personally, I'm impressed with the Xpro2's image, at this price point, expectations should be a given. Something better would fall into the arena of RED, or ARRI cameras, and their price points reflects that image quality.

Ok, if that's true, then a light meter has a setting for film/sensor size. But it doesn't. So no sensor size does not affect lowlight.

If true, a printed magazine cover gets darker when you cut it with scissors.

Depth of field stays the same. Exposure stays the same. Focal length stays the same.

A crop is a crop is a crop is a crop.

Take your camera and test/see for yourself.

I'm out of the discussion because I know how religious people get over it. Its like talking evolution with the Pope. Science from me and magic from the opponent.

DOF between the two staying the same, I guess sounds reasonable, but the low-light, I've always read that the bigger the megapixels the lower the light sensitivity the camera is because the bigger pixel gathers more light. So a bigger sensor with bigger mega pixels equates to a lower-light sensitive camera. At least that's what was explained to me by a Shane Hurlbut in one of his Canon 5D MarkII talks! Although, I may have misunderstood his explanation!

Nope, I work as a producer. I don't even own anything digital from Fuji, I do however have about 100rolls of Fujicolor and 1000 feet of 16mm Fuji at all times.

But I have shot with Fuji's in the past and really enjoy them.

Here on this forum I'm just having a conversation. That does not mean that I work for the company I'm currently discussing. Specially since I said I was likely NOT to get it at this point. People are always free to ignore my posts or suck an egg if they don't like them :)

Kinda like Canon. My theory is that they are holding back a little because releasing overheating cameras and dodgy Log is bad business. Either do it right or not at all.

Mattias, a Fuji sales rep, now that's funny! I know he posts some interesting and informative videos on various cameras, but a sales rep....I don't think so!!

Btw, are you the guy who was given sh!t on www.nofilmschool.com lately, in the discussion boards ??? I know they shot down a troll. Was that you?

Nope, wasn't me, probably another smart-ass, like yourself, that too is a know-it-all! Hows that for blowing up?

Yes. The most important thing is, that all the hardware is available. (fast sensor and processor, Mic in, Headphone jack).

But I agree, seeing F-Log for internal recording would be nice and if Fuji continues it's Firmware policy and listening to customers, I think they could/will add this. However they have to hear that customers want it. Just write to Fuji, they tend to listen

Highlight, Shadow, Sharpness and Color should work for video too, don't know about Noise reduction.

Should work? Well, they don't work in the Xpro2, so it woudn't surprise me if the aren't enabled, as that hasn't been confirmed one way or another that I've heard of.

I think it's a given anyone buying the camera would rather have it record the F-LOG internally as opposed to having that as an HDMI output function only.

Sorry, you brought me to this. All I can say is: DUMB ASS!

I answered the question you quoted.

Whatever! I'm not about to argue with all the fancy terminology and all the vast knowledge that is set forth in these posts, because it's not like you, me, or anyone else on this forum is doing anything earth shatteirng in the film industry. Call it what you want Dynamic duo range, Batman and Robin color space, I don't give a shit! This site is ALMOST as bad as No Film School, in terms of everybody is a know-it-all, and everyone else is a dumb ass!

Agreed.. something really weird about the motion. Will have to wait for real life tests to get a proper idea. Right now it's looking way too 'video'.

Also am I the only one to find Fuji film simulations a bit over rated? Never been a fan of heavy baked in looks.

It is an interesting concept, at least for still photography but the film simulations have nothing a proper LUT would give you imo.

No IBIS, External F-log, Rolling shutter issues, limited/expensive native lens ... meh.. It sounds to me like Fuji is just jumping on the filmmaker bandwagon, but do they really have the chops? I guess it's still nice Sony finds itself a competitor..

Hopefully a real non-sponsored test will give the full breakdown, I certainly won't be the beta tester for yet another compromised new hybrid system.. hyped up solely on the premise of 4K and some "cool" retro picture profiles..

I don't think the film simulations are over-rated at all, they add a whole new dimension to the JPEG output, especially the Acros simulations. On the video side the simulations are a bit over-saturated because the Xpro2, for whatever reason, crushes the blacks on the video recorded image. I can't speak for the X-T2 if this camera also has the same crushed black issue. Of course, this issue is just a matter of raising the blacks, mids, and lowering the highlights. What isn't mentioned in any post I've read on the X-T2 is whether the image tweaks are enabled for video, they aren't on the Xpro2, which would make a huge difference in off-setting the simulations. Those being: Highlight tone, Shadow tone, Color, Sharpness, and Noise reduction controls.

Dynamic resolution ? Huh ? Did you just make that up ? Lol. Good luck finding "soft" 4K out there

    Exactly!

  12. 5 hours ago, MattH said:

I respectfuly disagree.  Resolution and sharpness are not the same thing.  As for dynamic range, the codec defines the dynamic resolution (how many steps) but it has nothing to do with the dynamic range.  An image with a 4 stop range and an image with a 15 stop range could both be recorded in the same 8 bit codec.  Having said that, Its great that people are using the NX1 and finding it to their needs.  It just isn't the be all and end all, otherwise people wouldn't still be looking at new cameras.

I understand, it's all good! The bottom line here is it's ridiculous to even bicker about technology that is absolutey incredible. ALL these cameras have what it takes to go out and create something pretty awesome!

I've seen several mentions that the F-LOG can only be used externally via HDMI.  Could that be because...(fingers crossed)...the HDMI out is 4:2:2 10-bit?

I've also seen the this mentioned, and have seen the youtube link, BUT that Fuji rep isn't saying the F-LOG is HDMI out only, he never mentions that F-LOG is disabled internally. So, although that may be true, in my opinion, it isn't confirmed, at least not that I have seen definitively.

Some of you really think this will be better for video than a GH5? I respect that everyone has their own needs, but I still find that surprising.

Better is relative to the user! I think the film simulations are cool, well, I know they're cool because I have the Xpro2, and yes, cool! Personally, I think for video, the Panasonic GH5 would be the better camera, however, I don't think the GH5 can beat Fuji's color science, and, I don't think any camera manufacturer beats Panasonic's reliablility, they seem to never have issues with their cameras!!

  14. 1 hour ago, MattH said:

It was always over sharp though, didn't have much dynamic range, and the rolling shutter sucked. They are the reasons I gave it a pass.

4k is a resolution animal, so it's overly sharp by it's own nature. These are all things that are easily dialed to taste. As far as dynamic range, in my experience, it has the same dynamic range as any of the 8bit 4-2-0 capture codecs, which is practically all the DSLR/DSLM cameras.

Nobody cares? Then you are nobody ;-) since you are the one who does not care.

Anyway, you don't understand what I mean, and this is probably a limit of me (as a writer) and of you, as someone ignoring the capabilities of a great camera. It's not 'my precious'. It's an outstanding piece of hardware, well ahead of its time that, like many other tech goods, was underrated and surpassed in sales by way inferior products, due to ignorance (i.e. lack of knowledge) of potential buyers, like those thinking that this xt2 is something 'new and great'.

I have to agree with this, although the Samsung NX1 is kaput in the manufactures support, it's still a pretty amazing camera, and yes, it was way ahead of it's time. The biggest problem for the NX1 was it's acceptance by enough end users, which is why Samsung dumped it. Since the NX1, many cameras have tried to emulate it, the A6300 is a good example. True, the NX1 is far from perfect, nothing is perfect, but the camera will produce one helluva 4k image, that is undeniable!

  16. I think it's a nice 4k image, but I still would take my NX1 over the X-T2, at this point. That opinion may change as it's still way to early yet. I do own the Xpro2, and I love the 1080p image! It will be interesting to see if Fuji releases the 4k to the Xpro2, I can't think of any reason why they shouldn't, they, Fuji, should let owners enjoy the capability of the camera.

Yeah - crushed blacks surely was the wrong wording.

I don't think it is the wrong wording. I've owned this camera now for just over a month, and all the video has crushed black and mid tones. Why do I say crushed, well if you look at a Xpro2 clip in FCPX you'll notice the black level is below zero, and that the blacks clips at -5 NOT zero. The Xpro2 clips sits right on -5, anything lower than that smashes to a white line. So, all Xpro2 clips need to be raised to proper levels, it's not that you're gaining any more information in the blacks than any other camera is shooting presently.

I know there has been talk, well actually a wish, that Fuji release 4K capability to this camera in FW. I've seen several talks from Fuji reps, and I can say with certainty, that ain't going to happen. I agree with Fuji, although it could shoot 4K quite easily, the camera body design would create a heat issue, so it's a matter to them as to why create problems. What I do wish Fuji would release in FW to the Xpro2 is to enable the Shadow Tone, Highlight Tone, Color, Sharpness, Noise Reduction, and Film Grain all to the video side of the camera, as it sits now, all of these controls are defeated upon video recording.

  18. 11 hours ago, fuzzynormal said:

If you're using manual lenses then no. I've used a dumb eos adapter with the camera and the 10-20 Sigma without a problem.

Thank you for that, Fuzz! Any chance of seeing a few more clips from your camera? There really isn't a whole lot professionally shot with the xPRO2 that I've been able to find on the Internet. Mid-May, I'm pulling the trigger on this and I won't bother you anymore!

  19. 19 hours ago, Mattias Burling said:

I've been so close to buying a Fuji x100t, x70 or XT1 lately. I love using Fuji for stills and some of the ungraded video I see looks absolutely smashing.
The only issue with the video is that they have to much aliasing. So if the X-T2 indeed has 4K or they unlock it in the X-Pro2 I would get one of those. Not for 4K resolution (don't care about that in my stills camera), but it most likely will reduce the aliasing.

So I guess at Photokina I will know which Fuji to buy, if I can wait that long (need a stills camera pretty ASAP).

I agree, some of the video I have seen from the Xpro2 is pretty incredible, and I really haven't seen terrible aliasing. The 5DMarkII had a lot of aliasing as well, but many made it work! I'm so on the fence with this camera for video production, I love the image, but the question is will Fuji support the video side of the Xpro2 with firmware updates. I really don't care about it having 4K capability, but unleashing a few of it's other features for video would be outstanding!

  20. 21 hours ago, Oman Mirzaie said:

FUJI better open up 4k option for video on xpro2, it's capable and the fact that they would disable it makes no sense at all!! It's like buy a Ferrari and limiting its speed to 80kmph!! Stupid, Stupid, Stupid! I have said for years fuji needs to improve their video quality & features in order to truly compete with the true hybrids like Sony a7's, a6300/6000, gh3/4 etc etc! Lets put some pressure on Fuji to open the xpro2 4k option in firmware!!????

I highly doubt that will happen with the Xpro2. Reading up on Fuji, they are big time traditionalist, to the point, that even having video capability within one of their cameras is against the grain. In my opinion, I really don't think they care much about having 4K capability within one of their cameras. Fuji is all about the photographer and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

  21. Can't pull the trigger on this Fuji XPro2 till Fuji fixes the on/off bug. Don't know if any of you have had this issue, but apparently the camera will just freeze up, no word on if this happens during video recording. Many are losing all their custom settings having to do a hard reset by taking out the battery. Fuji has yet to acknowledge the issue, but hundreds of users aren't hallucinating this problem. Bummer!

  22. 1 hour ago, fuzzynormal said:

It works as well as any other non-flip-screen-photo-that-also-shoots-video-camera that I've ever used.

Maybe a bit better since the exposure controls can be manipulated by old-school hardware instead of user menus.

The EVF previews 16:9, so I'm not sure why you're assuming otherwise.

This may be a given, but I'll ask it anyway as you never know. Is there any issues with adapting (non-Fuji) lenses to this camera? If possible, I'd love to see the final edit of your racetrack video?
