    Looking at the information found about nx300 hack (the one which disables recording time limit), it seems that one way of doing some hacking would be with a firmware update.
    Another way of doing it might be through wifi or connecting the camera to pc with a cable. If it would be possible to enter the camera as a developer/debug mode, maybe some code could be changed right in the camera.
    As I understand, that nx1.zip file contains the updated firmware 1.4 which is running on the camera. Now when we have access to it, we can find the parameters, that describe the things we need to change, let's try the bitrate first. I just used search and was able to find many mentions of "bitrate" in the zip along with numbers like "min = 6000000" and "max = 8000000". Don't know what these numbers are for, but that is a start. So we need to find the right numbers and pack them in a new firmware update, like the nx300 hacker did.
    Here is a description of that process: https://sites.google.com/site/nxcryptophotography/diy-firmware
    And then someone needs to be brave enough to test it :D

    Let me know what you guys think !
    Ps. I still havent figured out how to render properly, quality is destroyed when I upload it somehow..

    I downloaded the source code a while ago and looked at it briefly but never found anything but after reading this tread I was inspired to take a second look and I found a whole folder of C++ files in the kernel package under driver\media\drime5\hevc. I even found this comment in one of them( d5_enc_host_ctrl.c).

      // Target cycle of 32x32 CU, P-slice
      // Mode1, LD_LC:  870         -- UHD30p @266MHz w/ 20% margin
      // Mode2, LD_HE: 1307         -- FHD60p @200MHz w/ 20% margin
      // Mode3, RA_LC: 1752         -- FHD60p @266MHz w/ 20% margin
      // Mode4, RA_HE: 2420         -- FHD30p @200MHz w/ 20% margin
      // Mode5, AI   :  870         -- UHD30p @266MHz w/ 20% margin

    Does anyone here know anything about GNU licenses? My thinking is if they are using the drime5 CPU to code and decode HEVC it would need to be built into the Tizen kernel and would need to be open source. But I dont know for sure.
    I think its all there folks we just need a Linux/Tizen master to take a look at it.

    The first thing any potential hacker should do is rlist what simply isn't possible or would be a huge undertaking.
    Things like log, 10 bit etc, 4K/60fps seem like they would be very tough to implement and test, whereas upping the bitrate might be a simpler task.

    I contacted Samsung regarding the release of a developer tool for the NX1, however Samsung US said no such tool was available for them to release. I have no Korean knowledge so if someone would be kind enough to try contact Samsung Korea because they definitely sit on the tools for the camera, they already pulled it out of Europe, America and Australia.
    As for the Source code, its at least something to begin with, we have more than what Magic Lantern started with so I am not sure we are in a position to complain but developer tools would be welcomed if someone had them, as far as I can understand its quite possible to unlock features through the Tizen OS however implementation to hardware level has to be done differently as its a seprated code apparently so if we wanted lets say CinemaDNG we would have to go into hardware level code in order to implement it but it should be possible to remove the 29 minute record limit through Tizen OS.
    I might be wrong though but its how I understood it from reading countless of forums regarding the hacking of NX1, none has ever come to fruit this one has to be the most active one I ever seen.

    What a round that was. Lots of creative answers of anything from the Red One (on fb) to the 5Dii (which I dont have anymore).
    Im sorry to say that the refrigerator will go into the next round. Thats right folks, two refrigerators in the next jackpot round of "Guueeeeesss the Cameraaaa!!" (fading boxing announcement voice)
    Correct answer was.....

    A NX500 with a Nikkor 35mm f1.4 in almost no light.

    Undecided, a SDK exists to create apps for pc to tether the nx1. You could still request it, I guess. But from there you won't likely be able to change inner parameters, like bitrate, fps, resolution and so on.

    But some ppl found some 'backdoors' for uploading scripts and programs to nx. And a guy, who totally disappeared, was able to get rid of recording time limit on nx300, by directly modifying the fw somehow.

    Guys, I am developer but being a developer is different than being a hacker. A developer works with tools that give them the functionality they need. A hacker may have to invent tools for platforms where such tools are not readily available. If we had a publically available SDK and a method to sign and upload the firmware onto the NX1 I am sure I could make changes to it.

    I think this sums up the situation pretty well.

    I agree that contacting the Magic Lantern people might be the best bet.
    Really there were only ever TWO hacked Camera OS's - Canon by Magic Lantern and GH2 by Vitaliy.
    Casey's suggestion of enticing other hackers into it with a bounty might be the other viable option.

    I've never contacted the Magic Lantern people - but I know they ARE contactable. But it ain't gonna come cheap because those are pro's that have already done their time in hacking and have moved on in their lives.
    Maybe we could pitch in our money and offer them a private concert by CHARO. That should hook anybody, right?

    I'm no coder and my logic tells me:

    From my perspective, most of us in this topic have
    -no idea how to hack the camera
    -no idea what it actually means or what amount of work or expertise is needed for this
    -no idea where to start
    + and we only know what we want
    + we can put some amount of money into it

    What about contacting ML coders asking for getting help from them either with coding and hacking itself, or just getting kickastart by fetching info of how to start, what(who) to look for,..

    Ultimately, their goal is to get RAW recording into "kind of" budget camera which is capable of handling such data rate and providing superb output quality in smallest cheap body, right? Also GH2 had hackers if I remember it right.

    So the phone hacking guys at xda often have "bounties" for various things, like rooting or unlocking a boot loader. That method I think could be very successful for us. We find an arbiter that we trust, maybe kidzrevil since he started the thread, and pool our money into something like venmo, so that people are actually committed. The bounty would be for something specific like "installable firmware that can increase bitrate to 150 Mbps and increase frame rate to 60fps at highest stable bitrate at 4k". People that want that feature pool their money into that. Once real money can be seen, we might see bigger interest from developers. Of course if everyone wanted we could make the bounty for more or less features... My vote would be to keep it pretty realistic at first.

    Bitrate is #1, hopefully from 90 to ~200 (high end SD cards can support this) if possible. Similar to the hacking done on the GH line.

    Hey all,
    I'm new to this forum today, but some of you know me from the Blackmagic forums or DVXUser.
    I am shooting almost exclusively Blackmagic RAW these days but I got an NX1 for the high frame rates and for the occasion that some client may insist on 4K.
    Lots of GREAT GREAT information being traded around on this thread here. These kooky codecs can drive ya mad, so I applaud those of you struggling through what must feel like endless testing. Thank you.
    Right off the bat I wanted to add 2 points here:
    First - Variable ND's do indeed all use two 'quarter-plates" (polarizers) against each other and that results in color shifts every time. EXCEPT the SLR Magic Vari-ND. This one is the exception. I have two of them and compared to the others I can assure you that the quality and freedom from color shift is far far better. Want some happy? Go there.
    Second - I've read through this entire thread and looked at everyone's stills and videos and I just want to shout: "BIT-RATE!"
    Meaning that almost all the image quality issues of this camera are coming from its low recording bit-rate. I've been through this exact routine already during the era of the development of the 'hack' for the Panasonic GH2. Dear lord...it's ALL in the bit-rate. I bring this up because if WE ALL get involved in pushing for a hack for the NX1 that will allow for a much higher bit-rate then it will stand a chance of happening. I haven't checked in with the N500 hack status recently, but it sounds like the ball is rolling. Masses of folks getting involved was what pushed the GH2 hack so far so fast.
    All these image quality problems were the same on the stock GH2 - macro-blocking, color breakup, etc., and they are ALL gone now with the 150Mbps hack we ended up with. Yeah, you read that right - 150Mbps just for 1080p. Yeah, that's a card eater, but that doesn't matter anymore at today's memory prices, and watching all those problems vanish was just so delightful.
    Anyhoo, continue getting down wit' your bad selves!

    +1 - by the way, Samsung's support of hacking was that they released an SDK for camera control - nothing deeper than that. So someone could potentially develop more remote control apps or keep them coming when Samsung abandons theirs.
    I wonder - rumor mill was that Samsung NX engineers have been transferred to various divisions. Would be cool if someone had an in with Samsung (journalist or filmmaker, I dunno) and a funded project could actually fine a software engineer who worked on the NX firmware, and hire them as an engineer or advisor. Seems like that would be a more direct path to a useful product. It's a giant company though, but hey, place an ad in a Korean trade publication??
    Other than that, see if anyone at ML has dug into the camera - someone experienced may have some insights into the structure of the code and how difficult it could be.

    If we can get 240 fps at a bitrate of 200... holy shit....
    HDMI can output 480, 576, 720 and 1080 (no 2160) but there appears to be support for up to 240fps (at least as a value in a table).
    Also, file names nx_cs.adj is definitely searched for on SD card (also alt.adj, nx_dev.adj, paf_adj_restore.adj, etc). Also, iperf is used for testing Wifi
    Regarding sensor modes (for video): FHD, Cinema, Video60, Video120, Video240, VideoHFull, VideoFull, ModeQHD, UD, UD_Crop1, UD_Crop2, 720P60
    If UD is UHD there are at least three different crops, tecno will love this
    There seem to be 7 movie modes 0 - 6 (0:UHD/1:UHD_D/2:FHD/3:CINEMA/4:HD/5:VGA/6:QVGA) - can someone check if they are all present in menus? (**two** UHD + CINEMA - it that 4k?)
    Frame rates go from 4fps to 240fps in many increments. Pixels can be read in 10, 12 and 14 bits.
    There are a bunch of functions that (it looks like that to me) call directly HW functions of DRIMe5,
    all prefixed with d5_ like d5_ep_3dlut_op_init (oh, yeah, there is code for loading custom LUTs), d5_ep_top_change_jpeg_moa_for_conti_cap, d5_ipc_set_dram_addr, etc.

    For NX1 - I would better start with some basics :-) eg. increase of bitrate. Just remember non-linux GH2 which had originally 1080p in 25mbits and hacking brought almost 200mbits video...

    Rest of the week is pretty booked, but this could be something I do maybe next week. Let me see if there are any camera shops that might just be willing to let me borrow a test chart, or maybe shoot something in store. Do you think that micro adjustments like green, red, etc are universal between all the chips that Samsung put into the cameras? What lens would be most appropriate? I have the 16-50S, but also access to sony cine alta primes which are quite clean and don't seem to warm or cool images much if at all.
