They get to a look, or a representation, but they're still arriving at a subjective guess as to what it should be.   There should be no guessing and no series of mouse moves besides loading your clips.   When you first see your footage you should be actually seeing your footage properly transformed for viewing and then grading it from there. 
 
That's why Academy Color Encoding System is such an exciting development for RAW and why, hopefully sooner rather than later, there will be no reason to not be working this way.  Smarter, not harder.

I hope the camera is a hit for various reasons. 
 
1) It seems Panasonic is putting hopes in the 4k and rushing it to market because the Imaging Department seems to be be under pressure from above as they've already sold off 51% of the Imaging Department based on an article I recently read. 
 
2) I hope it succeeds because I like what Panasonic has been doing for the enthusiast/pro market. 
 
3) I hope it succeeds because I find the the general support for Canon in America to be annoying and counterproductive and would like to see Panasonic make inroads in that market and push the other companies to offer more for less.
 
3) I hope it succeeds for the sake of MFT's future.
 
I'm enjoying my BMPCC, don't get me wrong, but this 4k could be a great kit for documentary filmmakers. I don't think it's too big or bulky. Looks a lot smaller than the Canon XL-1 from the late 90s.

Never used one but looking it over it probably won't be as great as you might think at first glance. This drive has 1 GB of ram built in and that is what allows it to reach such great speeds, if you copy a 500 MB file it will go right into ram which is super fast then the drive will transfer the data to disc at normal write speeds.
 
What this means is it will be super fast for working with files that are in total less than 1 GB but will be on par with normal hard drives once you go over that limit, which for prores will happen pretty quick. In the end you with this drive you will still be better off working with offline proxies instead.

CineMartin are the first company I know of to give us H.265 HEVC (High Efficiency Video Encoding) conversion with the just-announced CINEC v2.7. It supports up to 4K resolution and you can try it today.

In case you live at 12 Under Rock Drive, the H.265 standard is the biggest codec of the decade. It supersedes today's most common codec for encoding and internet delivery of video (H.264) and makes 4K recording to SD cards possible on DSLRs.

Wow, you posted this in at least two forums and apparently haven't read the pocket user guide.

On Super8 I would go through about 5-8 rolls of Kodachrome. Once the sun went down the shoot would be over and I would head to the bar. Usually would get a 3-5 minute piece with about a 4:1 ratio.

I always enjoy reading Peederj's analysis. Sort of the Andy Kauffman approach but I think it is brilliant in its dogged persistence.

I'm not surprised. I find both equally redundant. A viewfinder that's difficult to pick sharp focus whilst recording is to me as equally useless as a monitor balancing on top a small camera in bright sunlight. The only use I have for a monitor is maybe when shooting long interviews indoors or as a director/field producer confidence booster. When I'm not using a monitor, I don't miss the crowd gathering over my shoulder. I've used my Zacuto EVF on flapping mirror cameras and it's not very robust and I don't need more cables to fail and more batteries to charge. The fewer accessories the better.
For me THE best feature to arrive with mirror-less cameras is the EVF. For me it's the most tactile and immersive means of composing and following accurate focus. 
I was surprised when Panasonic left peaking off the GH3 but won't be surprised when they now include it with each and every camera in the future. Lesson learned and sales go up.
 
Back on topic. I'm glad to hear Panasonic may include focus peaking on the GX7 and glad to hear that finally we may have a quality video experience with a usable viewfinder, fast lenses, large(ish) sensor and IBIS! Now all we need is for Panasonic to adopt ProRes422.
Please don't reply and tell me to get a BMPCC. No viewfinder, no IBIS, small(ish) sensor. Fail.

Based on how they've allowed the situation to be (mis)handled, and by not showing any leadership, I now tend to think they are very disorganized as a business overall. If they were being deceitful I think there would be a more unified method and voice, albeit one based on trickery. Instead, by letting chaos reign and different voices proliferate, they seem to have no idea how to make this happen. I sense goodwill on their part for sure, otherwise why the incredible price point? But, I also sense an odd combination of idealism and youthful ADD spread rampant through the company, so to speak, which is threatening to undermine their whole project in total.

The flip side is I'm glad they aren't like Apple yet. I'll take waiting for a well speced affordable product rather than one that is overpriced and underperforms...and that's coming fron an Apple user. Apple has shifted to 'giving us less' as a business model. At least BMD, with their similar appreciation for aesthetics, is trying to give you more for less. Their idealism is their best quality. They are making a mess of things like a child would, but at least there are good intentions. Hopefully, they can release a few good cameras in quantity before their business model gets seduced into the demands of the corporate world a la Apple.

If B&H is overflowing with Pocket Cameras, then why aren't they telling people that? That would be a strange choice, considering their goal is to make money by selling cameras.

The previous 18mp is quite a few years old, it shouldn't be hard for them to improve on it.
If the improvement between the 18mp sensor and this one is equivalent to the improvement between the 5D2 and 5D3, then I think it's a good one!
Construction is rumored to be better as well, closer to the 50D than the 60D.

You haven't misled anyone. However, I don't think most the see the situation as black/white as you and therefore no one seems to be looking to you for advice. It looks to be a great camera and hopefully it ships on time. If not, move on to whatever else is available.

We're more than one month away from the release date and you're already blaming them for failing two years in a row, I'm not sure you grasp the concept of "optimist".
 
Black Magic Design has been around for a while, they've proven their value as a company with countless quality products, they didn't settle with just that and decided to come out with a groundbreaking product, they ran into some problems but seem to be learning from that, it's still only one of their many products.

My theory is the German film industry suffers from too much professionalism.
 
The UK is a ragtag island of adults who haven't quite grown up and crazy ideas :) We're also a bit arrogant, on the whole we don't take cues from the audience or pander to what sells best. That in my view is why we're creative.
 
There are probably more hard working consummate professionals here in Germany but not very much room for playing around. As a result a lot of people in the consummately professional German film industry feel they are in a creative crisis and ignored internationally due to uninteresting output.
 
Salesman don't play.
 
These people grew up quickly into adults and began striving for careers.
 
It's essential to experiment, to play and to go crazy. The film industry demands it, always has. Creativity IS play.
 
The problem is just like with professional sport, the creativity and personality has been sucked out of it because it is striving for performance, like a machine and it's become too sensible and sterile.
 
A salesman's target is to sell in the biggest numbers possible, but they don't realise how the film industry works...
 
Good films come from play, and good sales begin from niche hits.

Essentially the film industry has turned into an observer rather than a creator.
 
The role of a creator is to create! Not just watch what sells best and copy it.

Firstly there is a multitude of problems that were allowed to happen, that has had this announcement made and uncharacteristically these comments are made by the two people often associated with destroying Hollywood in the first place, whilst both Lucas and Spielberg created moments in cinema that yielded the terminology 'blockbuster', they are not to blame entirely.
 
The studios having let the dreamers of the 70s have their way, in order to stop their film industry falling apart, an industry that no longer knew what to do with the fast changing cultural landscape of the era, decided to play observer. In observing they saw a formula and took the reigns back, what they didn't observe is the 'why' and focused only on the '$' these films made. Having run much of the Hollywood gauntlet under this ideology worked until the era of todays audience kicked in, or more importantly speaking the age of the internet. Today audiences are in charge and the film industry is having to fight back against many other forms of entertainment on many different portals out there, what is making it worse in this 'tailored to my own choice' era, is that again the industry isn't wanting to understand or learn from, so they keep upping the event tentpoles and not the culture of what cinema has been for a 100 years.
 
Originality costs today, that is the fundamental reasoning behind remake culture, the last studio original fable was Inception and Nolan had to earn that, and did so with the ROI of TDK and the promise that he would also do TDKR. The same goes for Spielberg, just because he has made a lot of hits doesn't mean they will bow to him, the business is about the business of film, so for Schindlers List to be green lit, he had to sign for JP:Lost World and when you watch that film, you can tell right away his heart is not in it, in any of it, because he had to make it and not wanted to make it.
 
As for Lucas and his Red Tails nightmare, the business told him 'no one would be interested in that particular story, it was the business talking and he didn't want to listen, this was both right and wrong. Lucas accused the industry of being racist and this was a huge error on his side of reasoning, a little blind sided and more in line with a trouble maker, than as a bonafide reason. He should have understood what the industry was saying or just financed it himself, which he ended up doing.
 
At the Berlinale this year, I spoke with a lot of buyers at the EFM (European Film Market) as I have a UK thriller script set in the Afro Carribean UK community and even though it's not about the culture of these people, the first thing more than half of them told me was, we don't buy black stories, when I probed why, rather than assuming the worst, they said we cannot sell them, it was that simple, they were being truthful about sales which is what they do and they know what they are talking about, they were not being racist.
 
What is clearly missing and has been for a long time is what the culture of cinema used to be about that led to an industry being fruitful and now that there are signs of it becoming fruitless, no one wants to understand the hierarchy of the failure that has led to that.
 
If anything, the people, as in the audience, well they are in charge now right, not the studios, and are dictating what is being made by them. Good you might say on one hand, well actually it is bad on the other, because for every $1b, an empty and void of content Iron Man type movie makes, this only guarantees to Hollywood that that is what the people want, hence why they will only give their energies and resources to keep making them. However, if only those type of movies are shown, what choice do we have? It's a vicous circle, and until once more the industry collapes, and again they ask the creatives to give them back an industry again, it will be too late.
 
We cannot have the 70s again, and Hollywood cannot rely and hope the same can be repeated again, because those that can have gone on to other portals now to deliver them, furthermore, watching cinema and that magical artful experience of having a voice shared by many at the same time, a voice that matters first, is truly if not already lost right now.
 
A New Hope is more than needed, both culturally, creatively and most importantly, in alignment with an industry willing to listen and apply.
 

I'm selling my GH3. I've only used it about 5 times, so it's practically brand new.
 
It feels like a shame to already sell it considering I had high hopes of getting back into filmmaking but right now I just don't have time or a project in mind. I realized I didn't use it for shooting stills. I'd rather still just shoot a few rolls a year of Tri-X on my Nikon FM when the inspiration hits. And I want to get away from technical obsessions for the moment and focus on reading books and trying to get inspired with ideas for upcoming projects. Any by then, hopefully the BMPCC will (hopefully) be available.

If you funded the DB Kickstarter to the tune of a camera and if you pre-ordered the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at the last NAB, and haven't shot with either yet, just be safe in the knowledge that you're supporting the revolution if not actually able to televise it!
