Hi guys....been away with work recently so not many posts from me recently.
After a discussion with richg101 I decided to test the theory that introducing more optical faces into the Cinelux would result in nicer contrast and flares.
So I mounted a 72mm cheap UV filter to the rear of the Cinelux and as you can see...it helps considerably by introducing internal reflection. It Should also help intensify other similar lenses (ultrastar etc) - although I don't have mine anymore to test.
Very useful for those who are disappointed by the lackluster flares often found with these MC optics.

Don't compare the figures they give to film with the ones they rate sensors with. I got into shooting stills with c-41 (portra 400, 160, ektar,etc...) on medium format, developing and scanning them on my own and film (specially portra 400) has impressive DR. I might do a comparison with the d800 (14 stops @ iso 100), but I think portra 400 (motion picture stock is supposed to be a little or much better) has more latitude.

Damn. That was some serious damage on the front of that Iscorama 54! I wouldn't have had any hope for salvation of such a lens. Incredible result after polishing and recoating!

dahlfors reacted to Julian in DXOMark vs Reality - let's test it
DxO doesn't test 'feel' or 'general performance'.... Also, I don't think anyone can just look at color and say: camera A is better than camera B. That just comes down to personal preference and/or image processing, not something like actual bit depth.
You can disagree with the 'total' score of DxO, but just click trough to the tab 'measurements' and compare all the details.
An article on 'how to read DxO scores' would be helpful for a lot of people though It's important to look further than the total score and decide for yourself what is important for your photography (and photography only, DxO Mark is completely irrelevant for video).

dahlfors got a reaction from 1tkman in What is the best camera for stills & motion right know?
Sony's AVCHD cameras are great as long as the scenes are such that the codec holds up. With deep focus and lots of motion the footage breaks down to a level where no sharpening / post processing can help it. With my Nex-5 the codec is an unnecessary obstacle that I have to work around all the time. It is just too bad that Sony did not release a firmware update XAVC-S for A6000, that camera could produce so much better video with a better codec! There has been rumored over at sonyalpharumors that there might come an A7000 camera this year, but who knows...
My recommendation: try to give D5200 and D5300 some testing in a proper camera shop, see if you can figure out if the film mode workflow is something that could work for you.
Otherwise I think some of the Panasonic or other m4/3 cameras will be your best bet.

I feel these kind of questions are a bit like "If you'd have to kill one of your children, who would you pick?" - however you motivate it, you'll always feel like you miss your dearest child
Anyway, this is why I have a 16-35mm zoom for the wider end. In addition I usually pick 50, 85 and 200mm lenses along in the bag. If I had to go down to three primes, I think it'd be 28 + 50 + 105. Or perhaps 35 + 85 + 200.
My preference is to have my bag nearly packed with equipment and lenses nearby - so I can pick the ones that I think are right for the situation when I head out somewhere (anything from one lens to five, depending on situation).

I vote for GM1, since I am using it completely for run&gun. The missing stabilisation is not that much of a problem if you have a steady hand and if you actually wont run while shooting ;)

One way to get better Youtube IQ is to render 1440 or even 2160 version of your video. When browser downscales it to monitor size (normally fullhd) it looks much cleaner.

FM owners who are keen to install a protective 105mm UV or a large circular VND filter who have not figured it out already (took me too long)
    - It is done by unscrewing the front metal lip/hood - which reveals a male 105mm thread > install filter 'backwards' > screw front hood into male thread of filter.

It's a nice little design, yet seemingly not documented.

Compatible Mattebox would be a 110mm rail mount , and the FM lens has 27mm in-out travel to accommodate.

One chapter at a time, I'm translating to english my graduation work which is 90% focused on anamorphics. I hope it brings some light onto common questions as well as works as a good follow-up read after the original EOSHD Anamorphic's Shooter Guide.
I'll keep updating the links to each chapter on this post, please feel free to comment and correct me along the way. There are 22 chapters/topics and roughly a hundred pages.

Kristoferman, some of the more affordable rail systems I've seen are the Jag35 ones, like this one: http://jag35.com/universal-baseplate.html

I have this older version myself: http://jag35.com/dslr-baseplate-basic.html
Been using it with a follow focus. Can't complain, solidly built. From what I've seen, Jag35 seems to be a bit lower priced than a lot of other video gear, yet the products I've seen haven't skimped on quality.

So I haven't yet pulled the trigger on the FM lens module, although I really would want Santa to bring it to me. Especially since after I saw Häns footage! Soon... Soon...
