  1. Very interesting documentary about the evolution of documentary cameras and the early versions of run and gun. Refreshing to see what kind of cameras they considered as "very light and portable"
  2. You can find a used D800 for really nice prices these days (I've seen them as low as around 1050 euro). For stills, you won't beat that quality at that price. The video is decent too.
  3. Sounds like it's the auto brightness of the display. In this thread on dpreview you'll find a bit more info about it and what can be done: http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/3353740
  4. It was the moderators that locked the threads, not Ed. I don't think we need to have a public thread where we call Ed one thing or the other.
  5. Does this camera have rolling / global shutter modes, or do you specify if you want global shutter or rolling shutter sensor when you buy the camera?
  6. I'm still on the lookout for a cheap portable camera with interchangeable lenses and an ok slow motion mode. Looking forward to you testing the 720p slow motion quality! If this has 120fps in similar quality to A7S it's going to be interesting. If they unlock 200 fps - even more so!
  7. Yes. Be patient, it's a one person company, not a big Nikon/Canon/Zeiss type of company. To answer the question: I mainly had contact with him over email when I ordered mine, through the same mail address as listed on the site, http://dogschidtoptiks.co.uk/contact.html.
  8. You can order a FF58 version that is readily fitted to use with an Iscorama anamorphic adapter. If you don't have an Iscorama, you can also order just an FF58 with the custom options you want: color of flaring, amount of flaring etc. I have two FF58's. One lens with more flaring and less contrast, as well as one lens with less flaring and more contrast. They are fun lenses for creative shooting. I like mine since they tend to produce a look that doesn't seem as digital, boring and strict/perfect as my modern Nikon lenses. I use mine both as standalone lenses as well as paired with the Iscorama. If you want to experiment with different looks, I can highly recommend getting an FF58 with less contrast and a bit of flare an tint. Very affordable way to get a different vintage look on your footage and stills.
  9. Note that the Nikon D7200 is out now: http://nikonrumors.com/category/nikon-d7200/
  10. Koyaanisqatsi, one of my favorites. Such an inspiring film!
  11. Here's a few more videos: https://vimeo.com/channels/dogschidtoptiks I have to agree on Andrew's verdict. When I use the FF58's I immediately get into a more playful and experimental mood, experimenting with what I can do with the flares and the look. And the playfulness tends to be good for the creative aspect.
  12. Two interesting rumors for Nikon's cameras: 4k will be introduced to the Nikon 1 series of cameras, and the live view aperture crippling will be removed from D7200. According to nikonrumors D7200 will also feature 720p at 120 fps. http://nikonrumors.com/2015/02/18/nikon-d7200-announcement-before-march-13.aspx/ http://nikonrumors.com/2015/02/17/nikon-1-j5-mirrorless-camera-rumored-to-have-4k-video.aspx/
  13. Good wide zooms tend to cost a bit more, also the old used classics. See if you can find a nice price on a Nikon 20-35 f/2.8, it should be in the ballpark of the price of a used 24-70. It performs nearly as good as the newer Nikon AF-S 17-35 f/2.8 (which also should be a good choice, but probably a bit more expensive).
  14. And yes, the main competitor in the high resolution segment would be the D800 or D810, not D4S. Also, keep in mind that Nikon ISO is different to Canon ISO. A Nikon at ISO1600 is much brighter than a Canon at ISO1600. If I remember correctly the difference is around half an EV step to 2/3 EV steps.
  15. Only in shadows in very high dynamic range scenes have I seen color noise like that on D800 on higher ISOs, and only in the shadows. I've found the sensor surprisingly clean considered the high resolution. Are you shooting very high DR scenes? If not - that sensor loves light, so expose the image as much as possible without blowing the highlights.
  16. If you want to mod a 50mm Nikon lens, there's far cheaper alternatives like any of the 50mm f/1.8 or even the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D! Filing down the protruding metal parts will certainly make you lose a lot in possible resale value. Personally, I'd have a look around for a Canon 50mm f/1.2 and sell the 50mm f/1.2 Nikon. The Canon 50mm f/1.2 performs well, I believe even better than the Nikon (and I'm a Nikon shooter saying this ).
  17. Looks good so far - forum seems to load faster now!
  18. I have had my Nikon G to Nex adapter for just over one year now. No leaks on my adapter.
  19. Yes. Barlow threatened to close the FM thread when he was a moderator and Andrew found that it wasn't suitable that Barlow was a moderator since he had his own interest in promoting his products - so it ended in Andrew removing the moderator rights. The anamorphic forum on EOSHD is the best place for anamorphic fans on the Internet. I don't see any problem at all with people who make anamorphic modules / attachments to promote their products here - as long as it is clear that they are promoting their products, which I think is quite clear if you read through this thread. Heck. I wouldn't mind if Letus, SLR Magic and Anamorphic shop all had their own main threads discussing their development and lenses, taking feedback and answering questions! It's just nice to have information available right here in the forum. I don't see it as I am forced to buy anything from Barlow. But he makes it easy for me to follow along and be up to date about his product, should it interest me. I would say that is something that can be considered a gain for us forum members here!
  20. No idea about MustHD, haven't even heard of the brand until recently. I suggest you check out the Ikan VK7I as an alternative. It costs some $100-150 more than the MustHD monitors - and seemed very good in Dave Dugdale's review: http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/field-monitor-shootout/
  21. I didn't expect to see D800 in the list either. My guess though is that only some limited features will be available for those cameras with Expeed 3 chips.
  22. Yes. Set image stabilisation off for slider use. Same if you're on a tripod doing pans.

My first picks for primes in those ranges would be 35mm f/2 AF-D, or to go a bit wider and get the excellent 28mm f/2.8 AI-S. The 35mm f/2.8 AI might be worthy to have a look at. And as you said earlier - the 35mm f/1.8G DX lens is a nice lens for Nikon APS-C bodies. Due to lack of aperture ring it's pretty useless for other cameras.
  24. But yes, lots of DR is certainly not a key feature to make pictures looking good. It just helps in many situations.
