1. I have a feeling the PC will be much cheaper, plus easily upgradable. This is the same decision that made me switch: cost. Sure, Windows isn't very elegant, but if you learn your way around you're rewarded spare couple of grand.
2. Good to the developer here!   I reckon it'd be nice to put in a gamma adjust and some different film-grain blending methods too, as sometime the grain is a little brittle.
3. hahaha that's brilliant!   Look at the cost of this audio recorder. I thought Nagra recorders were exotic! Haha! http://www.studio-amg.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AATON+Cantar-X2
4. As with Magic Lantern hacked Canons, the higher bitrate is most useful for high ISO footage, where the noise is far more easy to remove cleanly due to not being mushed into the image by the codec compression. Other than that there's not a lot of difference. It's a really impressive implementation of AVCHD by the looks of it.
5. Oh yes certainly a piece of high-end monster kit, but it's always good to look at the top, to see what's on its way down ;)
6. Also, there's the new Hawk Vintage 74 vintage anamorphics, designed to look like old 70s lenses: http://www.fdtimes.com/2012/10/24/vintage-vantage-anamorphic/
7. A womderful looking cinema cam, interesting stuff! RAW recording to internal SSD, rotating mirror shutter, CCD (thus global capture). http://www.aaton.com/products/film/delta/ http://www.fdtimes.com/2012/11/16/aaton-penelope-d-delivered/
8. Awesome cheers guys! It was all shot in Snowdonia, very beautiful place. The CG was created to a relatively open brief (the final two shapes and abstract origami feel were the specific requests) by Thom Haig http://mografik.com/ in Cinema 4D and composited in After Effects. I took it all back for final grade and post in After Effects. There's Colorista II, Looks, Grain 35 and Filmconcvert in varying amounts.
9. Cheers guys! Most of it was shot straight to black and white (though quite flat) in the camera, I did a few tests comparing post-conversion against using all the available bit-rate in camera for luminance and shooting straight to black and white just looked better.
10. Perhaps ya should move this to the screening room, I forgot about that place!
11. Here's part one of a new music promo film I shot in Snowdonia using the FS700. I think there's one shot in there from RX100.Some nice CG in there too! Enjoy!
12. same here, i watched it for a long time, never seemed to arrive then suddenly, boom! Yes it is late in the lifespan, but I'm excited to try it out for sure, I don't see myself parting with the EOS just yet, in fact I'm swapping out the 550D for a 600D soon rather than picking a different camera system. Anything over the 1Kpounds mark i tend to rent, which gives away that when I have a budget it's not my body that's used (though almost always my lenses). I don't often do test videos, but I'll be sure to pop one up when I get the filter in a couple of weeks.
13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cVuAk_8TTRM This may get taken down so watch while you can! He's done pretty well for himself considering this isn't rendered in eye slicingly sharp 4K 13-stop RAW... hmmm. food for thought JG
14. The image out of camera loses some false-detail sharpness but responds a lot better to sharpening, by the looks of it. I noticed this about anamorphic too, the softening effect of the wide stretch lets the footage respond nicely to sharpening, and you can push a lot harder than with spherical lenses. The humble 550D also denoises in a far nicer way than the FS700, I think, though it doesn't have the 422 or ultimate sharpness. Combined with ultra-hacked I-frame bitrates on 600D I think this filter will help to peak this generation of cheap and cheerful EOS! I think there's still life in it yet ;) and there's whole new generation of film-makers with even less cash and even fresher ideas yet to come...
15. It's a good point! For me it's a matter of familiarity, I know Magic Lantern and 550D, my lenses etc. inside out, so it makes sense to chuck in a little to improve the quality quite a bit, but yes for first timers it'd be a little silly! I've always been a fan of getting everything you can from gear before upgrading...
16. Mosaic engineering have released VAF-TXi anti-aliasing / anti-moiré filter for Canon T2i (550D), T3i (600D), & T4i (650D). Designed to cut down aliasing, moire and false detail, resulting in a much better picture. http://store.mosaicengineering.com/VAF-TXi-Moire-Aliasing-Filter_p_14.html you can see Andrew's example of the version for 5D here:http://www.eoshd.com/content/7120/canon-5d-mark-ii-mosaic-engineering-vaf-5d2-anti-aliasing-filter-review I have mine on the way, I'll let y'all know how it works ;) JG
17. The Zero FGilm festival celebrates low-budget and self funded film worldwide, with several international festivals. I have films both opening and closing the shorts programme here tomorrow in Brick Lane, London, which is a great honor. At 5pm my short film Ceramic (two films set to music, all shot using FS700 slow motion) is showing, then to close the night my short with Thom Haig, SoMe https://vimeo.com/21926626 will be playing. http://www.zerofilmfest.com/london It'll be a great chance to meet film makers, see some awesome work and drink mescal Hopefully see some of you there! I am always dressed like I am on this Twitter background if you want to say hi: http://www.twitter.com/jgharding JG x
18. It is such a cool thing, and such a shame they don't wanna shake shit up by pricing more aggressively. Ah well, what can you do, just put money elsewhere, it's the language they'll listen to! I think ML said they'll never do a 1D because it's not a "people's camera" (so they can't find all the bodies to risk either). Hats off for their principles!
19. I have this in action now, after a bit of customisation (and help from 3M's wonderful sticky things) I've got myself up and running without too much hassle. Dual focus is not as impractical as I thought now I'm actually using it! Takes some practice to get the best from lenses though. The orange flares from mine are awesome. It has a purple multi-coat, but still flares in a special way. Expect some footage soon!
20. Agree on all FS700 points there. That CineGamma setting is very useful! It's an odd camera, grerat image in general, odd shot have a very video feel though and I can't work out what. Used all Zeiss glass with it too. It's horrific to use though, buttons everywhere, square shape, stupid preset-based gain switch. Cheap rattling ND wheel was disappointing as was the stupid screen and "viewfinder". I must say I had reservations, but the BMD cam is looking really good.
21. Just saw this one. I'm London, work in production in Soho and east, if you're still up for some opinions I'm up for lending an eye...
22. Wow, it gave the rest a kicking. I can't believe how poor the VG900 is. Just embarrassing in comparison.
23. I would have thought your biggest problem will be firmware. It's encrypted and will complain about the lack of lens data. Unless you can somehow fool all the sensors and pack them away behind the E mount. It is a wonderful idea though! Perhaps Sony will release a one-inch interchangeable soon and save you the trouble...
24. But yeah, back onto the cameras, it's good news about the BMCC manufacturing issues being sorted. Granted they have a lot of catch up to do though! But if they can pump everything into getting these out and working perfectly they could restore confidence in a shorter time than otherwise. I hope they do, it'd be a shame to see a new contendor stumble at the first few hurdles! I also hope they don't start immediately releasing really overpriced and heavily tiered products after this one too. We are dealing with a profit-making company after all, not a charity. It's very easy to see the numbers roll up as you do bad things... :o
25. I like 2.66:1 plus it makes longer waterfall and more oval background, but I'd not say no to a 1.33 with no dual focus.. Dual focus is a pain, just getting to play with a Moller 32 now, looks lovely but it's slow. 2x stretch is bonkers, but you can just crop the edges off. Screw Iscorama's old patent, they should just that method and use the money for the patent case when they clean up. Same goes with Kodak optical reducer patent, I mean those guys are flogging all their stuff, someone needs to buy that patent too. ;) The SLR magic has OK flares, the Apefoscope ones are just too too much at the moment. There are times when you want a lot of flare as an effect, but those are all over the place and pin sharp, great work on the project so far, kudos for doing it too! those flares need some serious taming in order to be aesthetically balanced though. Also waterfall style oval bokeh is pretty essential to the look of anamorphic, I'd say moreso than the flares, it's what creates the milky depth...
