Just got the camera, and found there is a little wrinkle in the workflow. The MXFs are being marked with a .9375 pixel aspect ratio in the re-wrapping of C4K files (4096x2160); this results in a slightly squeezed frame, into a 16:9 ratio. It should be a 1.896 ratio (1.0 pixel aspect ratio), and at the moment I am correcting it with 'interpret footage' in Premiere at the outset.

I'm getting 1.0 pixel ratio, PC.

    Yes, if not very similar.

Must have been another thread, someone reminded us that you can just make yourself a monitor lut, ie. your lut with increased contrast that you use for monitor not for post. Tweak it so you're happy it matches what you want.

Is it possible to use some LUT to just sharpen the EVF and monitor image?

Not sure about sharpening but for contrast, sure can. Just alter your favourite lut, save it as vlt, and there you go. Use the altered vlt for monitor, real one for post. Nice idea!

Great wholistic review up from the Northrups. Huge work into it, very impressive.

Since I am mainly shooting stills, I hate back lighting generally.

I could read this as it was black text on a white background. They're not talking about "backlight" it's "shoulder light" - a very subtle rear light to increase subject separation from the background. In the example above not so subtle, but usually it is.

  5. piece of blank white paper good for white balance as "tungsten" quite likely to miss the real temp (which I have done, oops). Auto is probably better. On the other topic, the number one highschool musical lighting problem is not having backlighting. All the actors just disappear into the background.

Thank you for your kind and helpful suggestion.

Here are a few clips that show the problems.

You have got your own words in a quote box claiming they are from me. Again, bad form.

Do you have a panasonic lens you can test with? If I was testing this I'd want to repeat the exact move with two different lenses, or two different cameras. This doesn't look like the v1.0 gx85 i.s. though..?

  7. Looks the same to me. The LCD is slightly over exposed (for all clips) at default but I prefer it like this. Comparing the Like709 to vlog with 709 lut is very interesting and (coupled with the 200 vs 400 iso difference) shows the extra DR of vlog nicely - more so at the dark end though (again supporting Jonpais and Leeming to expose to the right). Also, interesting to see what was pointed out in another thread about how 0-1023 vlog is actually ending up as something less than that in Premiere. Compared with Like709 which crashes both ends to 0 and 1023 respectively. I'd agree when you first see it, it looks less contrasty. But I think it does all line up correctly.

Edit. Forgot to mention something about the autofocus. Personally I don't use it but sure, it would have been nice to have. If you need world class leading autofocus during video recording then look elsewhere. Panasonic might fix it with firmware, or not.

Have been looking a bit closer at some of these reviewers using the C300ii, rx100, and a6500. They go oof a lot or pulse horribly so I'm not convinced "world class" has all the boxes ticked.

So first impressions of the GH5 are great but there's one thing that bugs me about V-LOG L shooting and it's the LUT monitoring. All the LUTs I've tried gives me this washed out image on the GH5 screen, even the one that's built in. I've even tried making my own and while they work great when applied to the footage in premiere, they give me that washed out look on the GH5 screen.

I've talked about this with a friend that's experiencing the exact same problem.

Or am i getting this totally wrong? Isn't a Log to 709 LUT supposed to give me a the same look on the GH5 monitor as it would give me applying it in Premiere?

I believe what you're looking at is simply the greater dynamic range of the vlog compressed onto the visible range of the led monitor. Instead of the blacks being crushed and the highlights being blown out, they are fully visible. This, counterintuitively, reduces the subjective contrast. The EVF doesn't have this effect as much I think.

I've seen it online for as little as $450.00 I think. It's much more than that here though. It's a little more expensive if you want the remote, but since it works with any smartphone, I don't think a remote is that necessary anyhow. Version 2 should be released anytime soon.

I think that those prices are usually for the the smaller M model but I'll check every so often as sales do pop up regularly.

    GH5: 4k 8-bit 24p 100mbps

    SD: 2x Lexar 128gb UHS-II (don't use these, GH5 no likey Lexar)

IBIS on, screen on, relay mode for cards, just filming a static scene against a wall.

    Panasonic - 2:19 - longest.

DSTE - 1:51 (111mins) - when it shows 1 bar replace quickly.  Charges faster than memowa.

    Memowa - 1:45 (105mins) - flatter curve so 1 bar lasts a while.

Kastar - 0:58 - Sad. (first one wouldn't hold charge)

Not really impressed by run times.  Oh well.  Keep in mind the variable quality between batteries so this might not be representative of the brands.

But two reference brands give same result to the minute as mine so nice test! Science around the world :)

  12. Crashing? Good thing we're not talking about Vegas Pro then ahahah (plus numerous other cheap NLE's I've tried). Ah such is life. I managed to get 3 bad power supplies in a row over 2 years combined with the first (or 2nd?) gen i7 boards. The last year or so has been pretty good with PremCC. Always looking for something better of course so either Adobe steps up or the decline will be inevitable.

6k photo is probably not good for moving targets which needs autofocusing.

Video AF yawn speed during 6k photo I think. That's why you should use mech shutter continuous mode afc for that task.

Image quality is not as good as photo because it uses video compression.

    h265 intra it's fine.

It is not always nice to shoot bursts with "machine gun" shutter sound wild animals or in crowded places.

GH5 needs a fast 10bit e-shutter option for moving photos.

The shutter is really quite quiet. I'm very impressed with it. Not sure what you're trying to say. Do you take a lot of photos of lions that are upset by the GH5 shutter sound while they are doing star jumps? Most wild animal safaris I've seen have swarms of people with very loud shutters. I'm just trying to figure out where are all these really fast motion scenes that are really quiet. Which is to say, there will be a camera on the market somewhere that does exactly what you're after there. An 18MP global e-shutter type of thing but with fast AF. Ok maybe not but what about the Sony A9?

Hey quick question i got V-Log today and my base ISO starts from 400 is that normal or am doing something wrong here?

Yup, starts at 400! Don't forget to turn the lut monitor thing on, makes seeing whats on screen easier

I will test some.  I have kastar (garbage, first one wouldn't hold charge, second one like half of my dste), DSTE, and just bought some newmowa because I heard they are also as long as the wasabis.

The DSTE so far doesn't feel as good as the panny but I haven't tested.

The newmowa does come with a plastic case for the battery though.

My procedure was - charge to full, start recording without playing in menus. I used 4k 25p 422, 10bit, LCD open and on, two 128GB sd cards so recording could continue from one to the other, leave it  filming leaves outside (the leaves outside, the camera inside). Once it stops, take the cards and read the duration off each of the clips and add them together for total time.

Dave Dugdale seemed to have transitioned his site's name pretty easily. And you can redirect when someone goes to the old site at least for a while, since that's the habit. But I definitely have no problem with eoshd.

He shouldn't have changed it. BarelyPolitical on youtube did a silly name change too. The name isn't about what you cover, it's you. Language does this all the time. Boys Brigade decided to change name in NZ but the only way they could go is up at that point, which they have done.

  16. The comparative part of the test looks fine. So a nice finding that e-shutter gives rolling shutter (which you have to be aware of no matter what camera you use), but that the GH5 results in no lowering of picture quality.  As he states, e-shutter for highest quality, 6k photo for no rolling shutter. Nice!

He needs to objectively measure the flicker rate though as the ballast for fluros can have them at 10kHz or more. Comparative photos would have also been helpful with cameras above each other. A photo by itself showing rolling shutter is not a good science fair project result. Also that the 6k mode has additional video processing it applies to your selected photo that removes any remaining rolling shutter.

  17. Another battery test:

    Panasonic 2:18

    Kastar 0:58, 1:16

    Power2000 1:24

    BatteryPack 1:34

    Wasabi - 2:19

So it looks like Wasabi has won the after-market battery competition. I also note that when going onto the charger it starts from 20% not 40% like the others. So it gets flatter while maintaining an operating voltage to the camera.

Check the Path on your system, if it's got C:\ then yes, but why bother?  If you just add X:\ffmpeg\bin to the path then your done and dusted because the ffmpeg and ffprobe both reside there in the "binary" folder.  If I download a more recent ffmpeg static build I put it in the very same location so the Path picks it up.

I first rename the old ffmpeg to X:\ffmpeg old

Thats in case theres an issue with the newer one so I can go back, but, do whatever works for you Orangenz?

I'm thinking there's a lot of people in the world who really don't need to be playing with such things. When I was going through the instructions I got the impression it was to /ffmpeg and you had to move the ffmpeg exe there. As you describe it makes more sense but I'm still trying to think of a way to make it easier for others.
