Just shot my first commercial project on the gh5, Footage looks OK so far, although did notice a whole load of noise on a couple of VFR shots at 180 fps. One was slightly underexposed but not by much... 1:1 grab. Iso 200, but shot at rediclous shutter speed, cos I was shooting wide open on speedbooster. Maybe that was it? Should clean up OK though. So wondering if there are any cinelike D luts out there that I should try out? Most of the stuff I've found is Dlog. Any pointers welcomed

yeah was't the last one like $5k? The AF will be basic I would say.

thanks @Orangenz was hoping it would have the sense to go to a low power mode save for the timer. Probably doesn't have one would be my guess. Hey ho. I've got so many dummy batteries knocking about (including a few I made). The exposure smoothing is something you can do with sony cameras, I just assumed panasonic would have similar: it allows you to track changing ambient light but ignores minor variations. Its a bit crap for day to night transitions (at east on my rx100iv), but it could be perfected.

Its not been released quite yet, but it must be soon because google gave me: http://nofilmschool.com/2017/10/detailed-look-35mm-zenmuse-x7-dji what is this DL-Mount of which they speak? text highlights, in case they take it down: The Zenmuse X7 takes that further by providing a Super 35mm (23.5×15.7 mm) sensor, and increasing the single-pixel size to 3.91 micrometers. It captures RAW videos at up to 6K/30 fps or 3.9K/59.94 fps and photos with a resolution up to 24 MP. The larger sensor in the X7 not only delivers excellent photo and video quality but also provides up to 14 stops dynamic range. Image processing for Cinema DNG / Apple ProRes takes place in the CineCore 2.1 Image Processing System just like the Zenmuse X5S, so for current Inspire 2 owners, the X7 is a nice camera upgrade. In order to make the Zenmuse X7 more compact and stable for aerial shooting, DJI integrated a DL lens mount which shortens the X7's focal distance to only 16.84mm The DL-Mount significantly cuts the size and weight of a camera while retaining cinema-grade image quality. Currently, the Zenmuse X7 is compatible with four DL mount prime lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The 16mm lens comes equipped with a built-in ND filter and the 24, 35, and 50mm lenses are equipped with leaf shutters (available in single shot mode) that support shutter speeds up to 1/1000s and are designed to reduce or eliminate rolling shutter effects and banding when shooting in artificial lighting. Workflow For current Inspire 2 owners, the workflow will be familiar. Videos that are recorded in h.264/h.265 along with JPEG and DNG still images will be recorded on a Micro SD card inserted directly into the camera. For those with the appropriate activation key, Cinema DNG / Apple ProRes RAW video will be recorded and saved on the DJI CineSSD. Video recording capacity is dependent on the size of the CineSSD being used. Pricing & Availability The Zenmuse X7 is priced at PRICE and DJI has announced a ship date of SHIP DATE. Tech Specs 3 Axis Stabilized Gimbal & Camera 35mm Image Sensor DL Lens Mount Resolution: Up to 6k 30fps video 24MP Raw DNG still images Recording Formats: Cinema DNG Apple ProRes h.264 h.265 DNG JPEG

Those 4k samples look loverly. I wish they'd push the boat out a bit and give us raw video bursts. Even 20 seconds would be cool. All of this in a mirrorless version is where I'd plonk my money.

Was rather bamboozled by how to get to the timelapse functionality. I had to google it, sheesh. So does the screen stay on for a whole timelapse? WHen I left it the viewfinder screen was active and I couldn't seem to turn it off. The camera only lasted 2 hours. Also did not notice any exposure smoothing function. Kinda assumed this kitchen-sink camera would have something of the sort built in. Am I missing some things?

Oh spoot. I forgot that the gh5 does not display shutter speed in aperture priority mode. This is so silly. Does the new firmware? Really without it you need to be able to set minimum shutter angle
-
are you fairly sure this is bulshit in the same way that there's a bunch of people that are fairly sure the world is flat?
-
Strikes me this will be great for focus pulling on long lenses

I'm in Australia. Everything is slow. You're server could be a zx81 and we wouldn't know ? (so you're site is fine, never noticed any probs)

Fastest ultrawide native zoom is 2.8-4 (not including the Olympus). Cost is not much different for a sppedbooster and tokina 11-16, which becomes a 7.8_11.5 f2. (Or pay a bit extra for the 11-20). Makes shooting In doors readable with available light

This seems to be common to all the gimbals. It's a big issue for what I use them for so if anyone knows one that doesn't do it I'm all ears
-
they're blummin expensive :/ I might just wait till the firmware is released and see how other folks go

OK camera bought! now, any news yet about what cards needed for the new firmware? I've got a couple of uhs1 U3 cards. Will I get away with them for 4K60?

excellent info thanks @jonpais and @Shirozina

thanks @jonpais. So OK, will get my head round vlog after I've had a tinker for a few weeks. So that rolling shutter: I know its supposed to be pretty good on the GH5, is it better than gx85?
-
I'm about to buy gh5. Can anyone tell me what the rolling shutter is like compared to gx85. I've found those files hard to wrap stabilse with some micro wobbles. Ends up all warpy and wobbly. Also how big a deal is vlog? Can I start with cinelike or do I need it from the get go? and what's the 1080 like? The gx85 is a bit gnarly

I'll happily admit I was wrong about the d800 too, when it came out the idea of a 36mp sensor with less noise than a 12mp (d700) was ludicrous (to me). I own it and love it. The title was because of the reasonable expectation of some basic features it should have to be interesting to this forum: filmmakers. This camera is not entirely off my wishlist, but if you were shooting 95% video I still say you'd be bonkers to have this camera on yours. And the title comes from my frustration with nikon, who have no cinema camera line to cannibalise for not pushing the envelope. High bitrate, h.265. Focus peaking in 4k, these aren't "you expect your camera to make you breakfast" things, heck even some sort of raw video should be feasible, even if in short bursts. I want to keep using nikon stuff, and I need a camera that I can shoot my stills and video with, but I'd be amazed if I bought this (especially at $5400AUD) that I wouldn't be kicking myself when the A7r3 came out: all it needs to do is have better 4k full frame than the a7r2 and it's already a better filmmakers camera.
-
this is much nicer, but if it was shot handheld at 50mm, where are those jerbils? (as I have unilaterally decided to call rolling shutter artefacts caused by jitters). THeres some warp stabiliser in here methinks
-
thanks @jonpais something else to consider :D I'm going to see how cheap I can find it over here... actually for years I've just found the hyperfocal distance as wide as I could go and hoped for the best. Doesn't work on FF but you can get away with it on apsc (stopping down a bit), and M4/3. But being able to pull focus on a gimbal with a smartphone say would be AWESOME. Can you do that with the a6500 and gh5 I wonder?

I just shot my first 2 projects in 4k after using nikon d5300/d5500's for years. At the moment there's more to like than dislike, but the major problem I've got is that the gx85+ speedbooster is heavier than my d5300 and my gimbal cant handle it. I was hoping the IBIS would take care of the mircro jitters but if anything it makes them worse. (Because set at 8mm - 11mmx0.71 - the edges of the frame dance). Other things: noise in shadows is not good, hard to lift. Highlight rolloff a bit nasty I dont really have M4/3 glass. was trying to hold out for nikon mirrorless or to see what sony's next round it but I need a quicker solution. I have a bunch of options (in AUD): Buy bigger gimbal: $1400 (Pilotfly H2+ 45 or Beholder DS2A for $800) Buy cam with better IBIS (?) (and low light/noise/dyanamic range) Buy much lighter wide angle (8-18?) $1400 - I presume the dual stabilisation would help with jitters too. Ultimately I'd want to be shooting full frame or aspc, so any M43 stuff is an intermin solution. Any thoughts?
-
there's a happy compromise though which NX1 users can tell you about For what I do 24-28MP would be more than enough for stills. Any canon still shooters here should try to borrow a d800/810/850 and shoot raw for a couple of days. I went from canon to nikon and it totally changed the way I shoot. Exposing for the highlights and not worrying too much about the shadows... knowing the deepest shadows would be a purple banded mush. If you know shoot in high dynamic range situations its no biggee.

Great summary. It's so close and yet...
-
well that explains the Aus price too. As the 5div is about $5100 over here (D850 $5300). But Nikon has traditionally priced its cameras very close to the US equivalent and sometimes better. So we have the weird situation where the D850 is 60% more expensive than the D810. What they may not have taken into account is this now makes the A7rmk2 more attractive @$3700. It makes this scint photographer determined to wait for the next crop of sony cameras, and maybe the nikon mirrorless offering. The D800 still produces amazing stills, and I dont need most of the D850's bells and whistles (very nice so some of them are).

Ah yes, I think your'e right.
